Even 14 year old Road Glides can still get a little love.
« on: July 26, 2013, 06:05:57 PM »

Had some time this afternoon so went out to the shop and thought I'd figure out a way to make a comparative chart of the o2 sensor data versus the actual AFR display on a bar graph in the old cassette playing radio's display and have the aux port from the radio feed an audio play by play of this data to the helmet in real time while still playing FM (and not eating cassette tapes).  Alas, the only thing I could actually accomplish was making it no longer eat cassette tapes.  The old bike got a new HK that arrived back from Iron Cross yesterday.

Nothing dramatic.  Just a quicky radio swap.  But it's nice when the old bike occasionally still gets a little love.

Me being me I'm offended by the big unused plug.  God knows how long it'll be before I start adding chit to take advantage of it.....

That bare connector DOES look pretty sad and lonely. Add an iPod interface, or a NIM, or something!

I know....   I know....  But I don't have an iPod.  Had Iron Cross add a rear aux port and plumbed a line from it in to the left side fairing glove box.  So GPS or other gadgets will just plug in there.  Big plug like that just begging for accessory connections is going to haunt me though.

What???  No iPod???  :'(  How do you listen to Podcasts of Lawrence Welk and your huge Kenny G collection?  :nixweiss:

As resourceful as you are, I'm sure you'll figure out some unconventional way to use that connector.  Why don't you powder coat it red to match the rest of your bike?  It's the details that count.

It's true.  No iPod.  Skynet be damned.  I'm all android.

I've never been a CB user.  Don't like XM.  Don't have an iPod.  Don't have rear speakers.  Have a Hawg Wired amp already in there.  Huh....  I may have to have just a radio....  Whodathunkit :nixweiss: ?

The old Road Glide is feeling all full of itself now though.  Went from a 25 year old standard of a cassette deck in a 14 year old bike to a 10-12 year old standard head that is HD contemporary product.  There's some weird symmetry there.  Oh well, can at least play MP3s on a disk now.

Very smooth swap, 99% of lookers would think it's original.  I've considered a similar move for my '00 SERG but unwilling to modify wiring/brackets. Was it a strictly 'plug & play' operation?  What year H&K did you go with?

Doesn't matter what year radio you use.  So long as the radio has been previously installed it's a straight plug and play.  Everything works but the AVC.  Send the radio to Iron Cross and they can reprogram that function to work on the older bikes too.

This was a donor radio I got for free.  Had the typical damage from banging on riser bolts in an Electra Glide.  Iron Cross fixed it, upgraded it, added the rear aux port and reprogrammed the AVC all for (I think this is right) about $280.  Once the radio is in hand just take yours out and slide in the new one.  You even use the same bolts to hold it in place.  Only thing at all different is the old RadioSound radios and the current HK radios have the big plug oriented 180 degrees out from each other.  So turn the harness plug over to plug it in to the new radio.

Thanks.  Had no idea that bolt pattern/wiring/dimensions had remained the same over the years. I have a bud whose HK has lost its display, something to contact Iron Cross about?

Definitely should.  They've got a flat rate repair that covers darn near everything including some significant reliability upgrades.

Don,

Interested in doing this replacement on my 2001. Already dumped the CD player, added Hogtunes amps and speakers.
What needs to be done to the radio if I don't care about AVC? Can I just swap them?

Thanks,

Thanks,

So long as the radio has been used in another bike before yes you can.  Only issue would be if you had a brand new still-in-the-box radio that had never been initialized for operation.

Great Info
My 2000 SERG has the original radio, but when the dealership was repairing things they swapped out the Top line speakers and replaced them with crappy factory HD speakers that pop and buz... then they told me the Marine Amp I had was too strong for the speakers they put in so they disconnected it...

Need to get the radio fixed and better speakers installed before I go crazy.  I just want a stock radio to work with the controls, and iPod connection.  the multi CD player is about to be removed... need the space in the pizza box

That's easy to do in our old bikes.  These classics deserve the attention.  Even the blue ones....

I forgot to say, when I complained to the dealership they took me in to talk to the guy fixing the audio system, their audio specialist.

He could not understand what I was saying, said it worked fine, I said yes in a garage it does, fire it up, go down the road and listen to the radio, its overpowering the speakers.... he said to me ,,,, with a straight face.... " that will not help.....

Im tone deaf!!!!"

OMG that explains everything

Yet another episode that illustrate why I'm so glad I can work on my own.

Sounds like they do things you didn't authorize, diminish the bike in the process, still get or leave stuff inadequate or wrong and think that in an auditory sense is they only way they are tone deaf.  Don't know how a guy keeps his cool during episodes like this.  Should at least step outside, unzip and wizz in their flowers.
