Modular helment
« on: June 12, 2014, 02:48:55 PM »

Would like something light, quiet, with good airflow. Any suggestions. I have a Evo Shark I love but its heavy and my HD modular is noisy as all get out.

Shoei Neotech for me.
It meets (exceeds) your criteria, and you didn't include price as a consideration.

Dear God yes.   500 miles today in my new Neotech, and I love the thing.  Great airflow, quiet, and an integrated sun shield.

Wouldn't trade my Schberth C-3 for any of um. It's really quiet, but cost too much.

"The Ball&Chain" and I are very happy with our Shark Evoline3s.

We really like the ability to wear them open at speed.

X2.  Pricey but probably the best helmet on the market.  I added on the integrated headset so I can bluetooth to my Garmin and iPhone.

Yeah I like the EVO3 but its hot unless you open it. The Neotec looks good  but it is expensive!

Ditto! Excellent airflow, I can feel my hair moving with the vents all open and it never get sweaty. The Neotech is not much heavier than a half helmet and a lot safer, well worth the money.

I like my Nolan N104 but I discovered on my first highway trip with it that it does get a little noisy with the top vent open. Many helmets fit different so be sure to try them on before shelling out the money for one.

Another 600 miles today.  I actually took my earplugs out for a stint, and was pleasantly surprised with how quiet it was.

The C3 is a great helmet if you have a round head.

BMW 6 or Schubert. Cheap for great protection.

Of course like the old commercial says if you have a $100 head buy a $100 dollar helmet.

Don't by crap to protect your head. Would you buy a cheap gun for self defense or a "budget" parachute

A couple pics of the Schuberth and the Scala Cardo Headset.  Fits great (I must have a round head), tinted built in visor is great, it is extremely light, rated as the quietest helmet on the market, good air flow and the headset is the icing on the cake.

Schuberth C3 Pro would be my first pick.  Problem it wouldn’t fit my head.  If there’s pressure on the forehead your head will not fit.

I went with the Shoei Neotec Modular.  I think it very quiet and comfortable.  It replaced a HJC Max, which can’t compare with the Shoei Neotec.

When it comes to the Modular helmets you get what you pay for.

I've got RPHA Max by HJC and love it. It's the same helmet Harley calls the FXRG for quite a bit less. Go up Revzilla.com, they have a good video review of a few top line ones. Like what was said earlier about protecting your head and the comfort factor. They say a helmet is good for about five years before you should replace it. That of course is with no damage, then you should replace it. So if your helmet cost say $500, that's $100 dollars a year for comfortable protection. To me it's worth it. Back to my helmet, it's very comfortable. The only thing I wished it did was allow me to raise the face shield without having to lower the visor first.

I have the C3 Pro and depending on the bike I ride, depends on how quiet it is.  When I ride my Road Glide, the C3 is LOUD!  A VROD not so loud, my Ninja it is quiet.

I have an RPHA Max as well, great helmet. Like others have said, different brands fit different head shapes better than others, find a retailer that sells several different brands and try them on.

Any try the Nolan 44?  I am considering this after a 2200 mile 5 day ride and it rained most of it.  i usually run a bell pitboss and love it but when it rains it would be nice to reconfigure the helmet to support the conditions.  Any feedback would be great.

I tried one on and its a narrow fit instead of a round fit. I liked it, but we went with the Gmax 67 which has visor and face shield and you can buy the chin bar if you want to seal it up for cooler weather riding. I have yet to find a helmet I liked while riding in the rain; just sayin.

I have a long oval head. Currently using a Schuberth C2 but it's getting pretty worn. The new Schuberth C3s are a more neutral fit and won't work for me. Any recommendations for a modular helmet to fit my head shape?

My impression is that the Schuberth is for round heads; the Nolan is for long-oval heads.

The Goldilocks of modulars is the Shoei Neotech.

Anyone try a LaZer Monaco Modular?  Supposed to be very light (carbon fiber) and comfortable.  Revzilla has them for $499.  Looking for something myself and these get pretty good ratings.

Try webbikeworld.com for a comprehensive guide and reviews of all helmets, Modulars included.

I have an HJC IS-Max BT, HJC Sy-Max II, HJC-Symax III Hi-Viz and a Shoei Neotech, in order of cost. They're all good, HJC being the loss-leader as far as pricing goes. They're not the quietest, but the best combination of quality and bang for the buck, IMHO. The Neotech is simply top-shelf in every way. Very pricy, but cheap compared to the Shuberth C-3 and C-3pro.

FWIW, the Star Wars Storm Trooper styling, the claustrophobic fit, and stratospheric pricing disuaded me from purchasing a Shuberth. If it fits you and your wallet, however, it'd be hard to beat the new Shuberth for quality and low wind noise.

I really do not want to spend that kind of money either. I thought the Noetech would work and it was high. But the bigest size was really snug. Local guys have a CP-3 Pro in a 2 xl that I'm going to try. Man it is high.

Wow! If the Shoei Neotech was tight, I can't imagine the Shuberth C-3 or C-3 Pro is going to be roomier! The Shoei swims compared to the Shuberth, IMHO. Having said that, the more expensive helmets do offer the luxury of multiple shell sizes, so you may get lucky.

Try Webbikeworld.com, their helmet reviews are hard to beat, and they do pay particular attention to shell size and or fit, especially for hard-to-fit individuals.

Good luck!

Note that the Shoei has changeable cheek pads. I found that their XL was too tight for my prodigious jowls but a swap to their thinner cheek pads fixed me right up. I had waited quite a while to make this helmet upgrade because no one local to me has any selection. As soon as I had a trip to a city with a Cycle gear (Austin) I was able to try some on and also able to get them to swap the cheek pads at no cost. A year and 15000 miles in it and if it needed to be replaced today I would unhesitatingly order another just like it.

I was similar with the XL, then swapped the cheek pads to the thinnest (#31???) and that worked for me. You might check the number/range to see if  a thinner set is available. I think the XXL already comes with the thinnest pad.

Yep I think you are correct. I hate to spend that much on a helment and then start craving it up so it will fit. I've done it before but not on something I would spend this much on!

I'm not hard to fit...usually a L does it for me in just about any helmet. The Schubert C-3 required you tuck your chin under the chin curtain in order to close it. Talk about claustrophobia! I though conventional wisdom had the chin bar quite a distance away in order to allow it to deform and not have your jaw/mouth/chin contact it during a face plant. While Schuberth is known for safety, I imagine the close-fit was motivated more by a desire to be the quietest helmet versus providing the ultimate in lower face protection. I would hope those criteria are not mutually exclusive  especially given the stratospheric price points the C-3 and C-3 Pro are positioned at!

Not sure, but CYCLE GEAR may have the SHOEI cheek pads, as well as other OEM  replacement parts, in stock.
In that case, you could try before you buy.
I have a retail store near me and they are one of the biggest SHOEI retailers. I get a nice MSF discount from them as well, which doesn't hurt!

Went ahead and ordered a Lazer Monaco Carbon Modular.  VERY lightweight.  Followed the direction from the sales guys at Revzilla for fit and they were right on.  Ordered a large and ended up changing the cheek pads to an XL.  If you ask, they will send you a return tag for free return shipping - for another size or just to return if if you don't like it.  Good fit, good visibility, comes with a transitions shield.  $499 shipped with no tax.  I'm gonna keep it.

Hey Big Lew
I too just came off a road trip that included my share of rain.  My Bell Mag9 is a cool helmet with Bluetooth but Colorado is normal pretty dry with thunderstorms so I removed the face shield because it has the retractable sun visor but I got caught in a big monsoon and my glasses and that visor were no match for that kind of water.  I saw a guy at the PNW Rally with a modular helmet it looked cool but now I would like to ask that dude about it in the rain.
Keep us updated with your search
Thanks

I've been following this helmet.   They will start taking orders next Monday.  I'm not sure the cost but I'll assume it's high. What it does is amazing.

I have never owned a fullface helmet.  Do they fog up in rain?  I dont know how they wouldn't with all of your breath on the inside?

Some less than others and there is a spray or wipe that you can put on the shield that helps. Only time its as issue is when you stop and get no air flow. I usually just flip the shield to the first position to get some air in then close it once I get moving.

I ride with my face shield up 99.9% of the time.  I like the increased air flow.

Thats one of the reasons I buy modular helments (shark evo 3). Its a great helment, chin bar flips all the way back. Its just a little heavy and not the best airflow. But its great in weather or long trips.

Just to be clear, chin bar is always down and face shield is up.  I like the modulars because I can take my helmet off without removing my glasses.

When it rains I flip the face shield partly down and keep the rain off my glasses.

I've had the Shoie Synchrotech, Multiech and now the Neotech. By far the Neotech is the best helmet made for under $600. Increased airflow and the anti-fog shield are lifesavers.

Just ordered a Shoei Neotec I am concerned about one thing, will I still be able to hear the radio? I know when I wear ear plugs they knock out much of the traffic, road, and wind noise and the radio seems clearer. Is that the case?

Thanks

Not as bad as I thought it would be, just a little more than a loaded up Schuberth.

I went with HJC
walked into my HD dealer and said I was a HD modular and she said no you don't!
HJC makes HD helmets and it was half the price, I got mine for about $130, blue tooth ready
super quite and very comfortable

allot better than the Bell pit boss I also have

I have a Nolan N-104... great airflow, pin-lock means no more fogged screen... I can flip up the helmet at a stop light for added air flow... I am kind of spoiled.

Came from a Shoei earlier version of the multitec...

It is now that time of the year that I start to look for the next helmet... I see that Shark makes an HD branded helmet... but since I want to use this on my future Ducati and HD bikes... I will look at the Shark branded one...

So, besides the Shark Evoline 3ST and the Shoei Neotec... what else should I be looking at??

Are the Schuberth C3 Pro that much better to justify the $$$$???

Exactly! It's only "better" if it fits and you're willing to spend the money!

Personally, I bought the HJC Symax III and ISmaxBT in Hi-Viz and White/Silver (both with the integrated Chatterbox BT), respectively, because they fit, I got killer prices on them, and I can wear them on either of my H-D's or my Ducat Multistrada ST. I bought a SHOEI Neotech in Metallic silver for the same reasons. Thank you Helmet House and SHOEI NA for the pro courtesy discounts!

I was not willing to spend $1300 on the Schuberth C3 Pro with integrated BT. Even with a MSF RiderCoach discount direct from Schuberth NA, it was way too much money and the Star Wars storm trooper look and claustrophobic fit turned me off.

FWIW, the Lazer Monaco Carbon Fibre modular is gorgeous, highly-rated, and ls loaded with features you'd pay extra for on other helmets. The LS2 FF394 is the first SNELL-rated modular and is also highly-rated. Do they fit? I haven't a clue. Nobody near me has either one. You could order through a reputable online retailer, and return if it's not for you.

There are a lot of choices. At all price points. Do your research and try them on. Your head and your wallet will tell you if a particular choice is "worth it" for you.

If you have a perfectly round head, the C3 is a nice helmet.  I have an Arai/oval head and the Neotech fits me perfectly.

Apologies to the OP for the hi-jack...

Looks like I will keep my helmet for some time... or get the N104 EVO (revised version) when it is time to change...  The wife just gave me the N-com B4 for my birthday (well, got to wait until the 9th to open it).

I own a Schuberth with the SRC system.  The helmet fits great (I must have a round head), but the audio system sucks, terrible sound quality.  If I was to spend this much money again, I would try the new Skully helmet.  Not sure about the Skully fit, but what it can do is pretty amazing.

I just hope they are doing crash testings to see how that cube inside reacts...does it shatter or dislodge?  Would be sad to survive the crash but loose an eye in the process...

Also, size and weight will be an issue... with the latest developments in helmets we now have companies creating lighter and smaller helmets (or two shells for the different sizes).  That helps a lot with reducing buffeting and improving internal air flow.

The Skully looks huge...

Also, read the fine prints... you are still not buying a product... you are contributing to their development...

Quote
By clicking 'Continue', you acknowledge that you understand that you are contributing to a work-in-progress and not making a direct purchase. Perks are managed by the campaigners and cannot be guaranteed by Indiegogo. Your click also acknowledges that you agree to the Indiegogo Terms of Use.

So even after sending US$1,400.00 you run the risk of not getting the helmet... again, one more reason to just wait for the final product to come out next year and see real user reviews.

Products like these, you wait, you just wait... I am happy that they found brave souls to fund and provide the real world testing... but I will check back in two-three years...

Do not get me wrong. Love the idea. I wish them well. Having all that integrated to the helmet as an option for the rider to use will be very helpful. Those that find it as a distraction can always turn it off, but I see this technology moving mainstream.

Any bets on how long they last before getting acquired by one of the major brands?

I just purchased a schuberth c3 for under $500 including tax.  They are closing them out for the c3 pro which is the newer model.  I have a round head and it fits very nicely, xxl.  Call me meat head.
It's very quiet and has great air flow inside.  I could feel the air cooling the top of my head.  If you ever have an accident they will sell you a replacement for 1/3 the going price for the replacement helmet.  I hope to never take the up on that but it is comforting to know.  So much nicer than the HJC I had been using.  It is one of the few that you can adjust the sun visor to any position.  Most are either up or down only.  No more having to hold my arm up when driving straight into the sun.

I could not be happier with it.   Thanks to all who shared their views on it.  I did a lot of research before I purchased and it was fellow forum posters who got me to consider the Schuberth.  Thanks guys!

A bit of a side note: Sena is coming out with a few versions of custom-fit headsets called 10U and each is a special design to integrate into  particular helmets, including the C3 the NeoTec and a few others.

I started riding with Bell when I first started using a helmet, had one of the first Bell-Stars in the early '70's, it had such a small eye port you had to work to see, but I was poor and they were free (we were a WD for the line at the shop I worked in), bought several more Bell's over the years but in '99 I bought a Shoei and have since bought 5 more. Currently we are both wearing Neotech's. Best Helmet I have ever worn, very quite, good airflow, cheek pads that can be swapped for a better fit and it only takes about a minute to do it. Have my HD supplied headset's in them, They are just wonderful helmets. I like the pivot being a singular unit that inc the chinbar and the shield.
I went down in '74 and slide on my face, along way. Wearing a Bell Star, it ate thru the chinbar but never put a scratch on me so I have worn full face ever since. I am a proponent of everyone wearing one. IMHO.

Just got Bell Revolver Evo helmets for me and Mrs.  First modulars for us. No review yet either. Ocean city bike event had a Harley sales tent with $50 any helmet. Nobody looking at full face models. We got there late afternoon and found two that fit that still had package taped around helmets. First skulls to try on. So google it and see they are $200 everywhere. Wore a Bell motocross helmet 30 years ago that saved my face. Give these a try.

Thinking of buying the Schuberth C3 there's a pretty price reduction on Reveille currently. I've never tried on a modular helmet and in fact for the most part I do not ride with a full face helmet mostly because I haven't found one I wanted to spend the dough on. Modular vs. Full face whats the opinion on comfort between the two?  TX's

I got Bell helmets this year and they are pretty nice. Half helmet half time and lidless the other half usually. Wife and I put headsets inside and works little better than 3/4 helmet.

Received the C3 today I deciding if I'm going to keep I've ridden so many years with a half helmet this is going to take a bit getting used too. I'll have to say it fits pretty comfortable I ordered a size larger than Revzilla measurement suggested I think I'm glad I did unless over time the fit changes as the helmet wears in.

I know how you feel.  I ordered the lazer Monaco carbon fiber from revzilla last winter.  I only use it during the colder days and it is definitely an adjustment getting used to it.  but, after you do get used to it, it isn't so bad.  but I do enjoy it when the weather warms up and I can rock the half helmet again :2vrolijk_21:

Can give a review for a few rides. We have not used the chin piece to seal out the wind, so we have some noise. Highway is nice and local good helmet. Secure and plenty of view. Harley headsets fit perfect, and sound very good. The mic gets in way at times when first put on, like I don't know where it should be with the chin bar up, then down, I have to move it, but that is a minor complaint. Mine might be a hair big, I say that cause I got the head ich one day and usually that's from wearing a loose helmet. So going to try a doo rag or bandana under it. My fault on size as they were only two modular on sale. Wife loves hers. Feel way more protected out on road and can hear each other and radio better than using bike speakers and yelling back and forth.
Rode alone on a cold day with chaps and black jacket, Called robo cop by my buddies but got thick skin.

I really love my Shark Evo. Its a little heavy but the way the locking chin bar rotates all the way back makes it great!

I never had a full face helmet. Always had a 3/4 helmet.  Question can you still hear the stereo because they are supposed to be quiet.
I think the modular is the way to go because it would be easier to take glasses on and off or drink or eat a snack without removing the helmet.  Yellow Shoei Neotech or ??? My Bike is Yellow.I have looked at many and can't make up my mind. One other thing Helmets come in different shapes? I only  see size options and colors when ordering.
Thanks

I'll let you know my thoughts after I get a chance to wear the thing it somehow got wrapped and is under the tree I'll be interested in the sound level also. I don't really want the head set system unless I could find one that was for the stereo only and was of high quality sound and would bluetooth. No interest in bluetooth with a passenger or additional riders.

Wow! That is totally different. I didn't  see that coming ! The modular front might come loose on impact this one may too, depending upon the latching mechanism.

I'll have to say the schuberth c3 is very comfortable I didn't think I'd get used to it so quickly.  I don't mind riding with it at all.  The one down side is its much harder to hear the sound system over the engine noise.
