New 103 gas mileage with 255 cams
« on: September 23, 2013, 08:59:25 PM »

My wife only gets a little over 48 mpg on her SG Special with the 255 cams.
Do you think that will improve after the dyno tune?

Only??? And no I don't think you will get better mileage. I'm not sure why you aren't happy pushing 50mpg  :nixweiss:

Sometimes mileage goes down after a tune if the engine has been running lean.

So it will cost you more to run , but it will last longer !!!

If I can get 40 mpg I'd be soooo happy,,   I might get close to what you get going downhill with the motor off.  :nixweiss:

Tapping on the 50 mpg door is pretty good.
In order to get much more than that, a Vespa would be the best bet.

The funny thing is, I still have the stock aircleaner.  The S/E one is on back order.  So it should be running rich.  Right?
So I'm thinking it should get better mileage.   :nixweiss:

You and me both... I'm sure mines has something a lot to do with getting rid of the stock lean condition and the uncontrollable urge to twist the throttle. :D

40-42 mpg is what I get with my CVO, I hope when they do the dyno tune the SG doesn't drop down.  (Canned map V&H headers, Supertrapp & 255 cams).  The canned map was installed assuming I had the A/C kit installed, but I don't.
I would think it to be running rich until I get the A/C upgrade.
Seriously, I'm surprised at the great milage.  I hope it doesn't go down after the tune.

With the "lean" tunes the factory puts on these bikes for EPA compliance, I would expect your mpg to drop after the tune.

I run a power vision on my 110.   The "power" tune puts me somewhere around 36-38 mpg and that's with my twisting the throttle.

I have a second "economy" tune for long distance cruising.  Our 9200 mile trip through the 11 western states, riding two up and loaded heavy we averaged 43 mpg.  A couple tanks I saw 46-48 mpg.   :cucumber:

MPG in most cases is a trade off. You save at the pump but the extra heat that is being induced into the engine will reduce longevity in most cases. Most times it will gall the exhaust valve and guide. Many times you will see cylinder walls that have a golden hue to them and oil on the crown of the piston as the oil ring is no longer able to work as efficiently as it once did. The higher heat will relieve the oil ring of its OE temper.  Have a 14 that was dropped off yesterday with a new pipe and download.. Customer has issue with the fact it burns the hair off the back of his leg  :o  But MPG is very good  :huepfenlol2:

Don't tell anyone at the dealership that you get over 48 mpg....HD may want to buy the bike back and put it in their museum in Milwaukee. LOL
One of the head mechanics at the dealer told me that one guy with a 103 Limited is getting 55 mpg w/ stage one and good dyno tune! -not sure what cams.
He's the guy that did all the work on my bike, and he thinks it runs very strong.  -just got the new A/C yesterday.
Anyway, he wasn't surprised at the mpg.
