2007 fxstsse outdated download
« on: June 14, 2015, 10:20:00 AM »

I have a Gold/Tangerine 2007 FXSTSSE and just had it in for a 5k service.  When they checked the download they told me that it was an outdated download and if they installed the new one they could not put it back to the original.  My question is; has anyone tried this?  I seem to have to have my bike over 2000 rpm to keep it from lugging down in any gear and sixth gear is over 60 or 70.  Does that seem Normal???  Thanks, W5OXA

Here is some info from an old post of mine.

594  General CVO discussion / Re: Charged for "Update Download"?? « on: April 22, 2009, 08:02:10 PM »   Quote from: Majorrocky on April 22, 2009, 07:49:07 PM
I recently dropped my '08 SERK at the local dealer to have some passing lamps installed, turn signals relocated, etc.  While I was there I made the statement that if there were any downloads available for this bike to go ahead and take care of it.  One of the mechanics at the same dealer had mentioned several weeks ago that there was one available that would fix a problem that I had experienced (if you cut the bike of with the ignition switch first instead of the run / off switch on the handlebars there is a possiblity that the throttle by wire (?) may not have time to set the idle all the way down and when you crank it back up it runs at a constant high idle, requiring some magic combination of the ignition switch and run / off buttons to reset it).

Anyway, I digress... when I picked the bike up today I was told that there was indeed a "chargeable" code download available and that they had performed the update.  I didn't catch the word "chargeable" until I went to pay the bill and even then it didn't really sink in.

>

I now wonder if I just got taken to the cleaners...  The charge for that update was $149.95 (give or take with labor & local shop discounts, taxes, etc.).  The charge code on the invoice was 33237-08C/DT.

Can anyone explain to me exactly what that update was / what it does and more importantly why I should have to pay $149.95 for a system update on a bike that I've had less than 9 months and has only a little over 3K miles on it?  If there's a reason then so be it, I'd just like to understand it a little better. :confused5:

I work in the I.T. field and when there's a system update available to fix issues with a computer it is generally made available for free.  I'm gathering that's not the case with bikes?   :confused5:

Any insight anyone could provide me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Major

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx below is my answer
I had them remove the parade mode as I felt it was unsafe. When i asked them to do it, the first thing out of their mouth was '$350.00"
I told them (dealer) that on the Harley Davidson Web site it states a one time "FREE" download to remove that feature.
After I talked with the General Manager he then talked to the Service Manager and they completed it at "no Charge".
You might check the website also and maybe could find more about your download.
Good luck and you know everyone on this site will be watching and giving you some expert advice.

The calibration file, which is what you're calling a download, is still going to be a street legal (stock) calibration.  That's the only kind H-D is allowed to download under the law.  Odds are the only real difference pertains to something like the EITMS, but I don't know for sure.  What I do know is that the dealership will want at least $150 to do the download, and there is no guarantee the bike will run any better than what it does right now.  Why not apply that money to a proper tune from a real full time professional tuner instead?  Yes, it will be significantly more than $150.  But when done correctly, you will be amazed at how much better and smoother the bike runs under all conditions.

In 2007, the MOCO came out with what they called a "torque smoothing calibration download".  It was one of many changes from the MOCO intended to protect the crankshaft and driveline.  I suspect this is the download they are referring to...  There is probably more upside than downside to having the download installed.  That said, Jerry (GRC) makes a good suggestion.  Spending the money on a quality tuner and tune is a better investment, provided there is a quality dyno operator in your area.   :2vrolijk_21:

Thank you all for your input.  I have done some more research and found out that no one seem to know just what it will do of fix.  So I guess I will just leave it alone and do as the Harley techs advise “if it is not broke don’t fix it”.  again thanks, it has been a good research.

W5OXA,

This is normal for these bikes. I have an 07 as well.
I just keep it turned up over 2k rpm's in every gear and she's happy!  :2vrolijk_21:

 :beatdeadhorse:

I got mine new in 2007 and experienced the same problem.

Those who had not experienced it were those who had changed the pipes
and less back pressure seemed to cure everyone's ill's.

Although they reprogrammed the ECU a couple of times Recall and whatever
back in 2008-9.

I always felt that the problem was because the engine was tight.

The rear wheel under take-off would act like it was chugging as if each time
it fired the rr wheel seemed like it wanted to chirp.  A few people experienced
the same thing with the std slip-ons.

Eventually this all went away by the time I hit 30K by the way I broke the engine in.

6th gear 3k rpms was overloading the bike, I had to run over the 65 MPH to hold it.
By 30K I could pull a steep hill in 5th @ just under 2K RPM's. 6th will hold and pull
out slowly @ 2K RPM's no lugging (my answer to your remark is a work in progress to be finished)

 :beatdeadhorse:

There were two (2) recalls performed on these Bikes back in the day.

First: Battery shorting out against frame under seat.

Second:
a) ACR/automatic compression release (possible failures)
b) Head gaskets (oil leaking from head, weak design)
c) Bolt lower left side of case between jugs (leaking oil, placed 'O' ring over bolt fix)
There was a tappet clearance problem (rocker box) that was performed on some
when this recall was done.

My Bike experience all these failures by middle of second season @ just under 10,000 miles.

Do yourself a favor when you replace your tires, usually rear goes first @ 7,000 miles.

Dunlop developed much better tires front/rear for this bike called American Elite.
@ $170/rear, @ $110/front delivered (http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/)
 a) more rain grooves (better traction).
 b) softer feeling (lighter ?) tire (more comfort, and longer lasting).
Negative: no dime sized bar & shield on side of tires. LOL

I'm on my 8th set of tires.

D407: too hard, uncomfortable.  $240 ? H-D recommended tire (antiquated).

D402: too soft, shorter life ?

Tire Pressure:
Front max is 30 PSI
Rear max is 40 PSI

All H-D spec's reflect 180 lb rider. I'm 160 and lower my pressure for comfort
and traction.

Additionally:
Never top off your tank regularly, all you will get is someone's 87 octane in
the most part of the first gallon left in the hose and pump.  Soon, that's all
you have.  For those who only use 87 octane, get a Honda.  H-D is all about
performance.  There are many benefits that come with High Octane.

H-D paid for a top end failure that was covered by my extended warranty to
the tune of $2400.  Caused by bad fuel I picked up out of town.  87 Octane
will get you there (failure) faster than anything.

I gave this advice sometime ago to HOG Mag.  They never printed it. That
would keep you out of their shop. Talk to a Real Service Manager and they
will admit to the high incidence of failures due to bad fuel.

Some problems float on top of your fuel. When you get down to the last
gal or half is when you start to experience idle problems, fuel shut off
rounding slow corners or cruising at speed.

The quality of fuel you're paying for has never fluctuated as much as it is
today.

Shudda-Coulda-Woulda don't get it with the cost of maintaining a Bike today.

that's it.......j

Thanks for the info Jack,  the advice about the fuel is good, i only use stations that have separate hoses for each fuel.  I only use highest octane I can get.  I know about all except the tappets adjustments and the upper end.  What was the result of the ACR failure???.  When I start the engine there is a big clunk but it runs o.k. other than that.  Again Thanks

 :beatdeadhorse:

result of ACR failure:

I can only think (it) was harder starting.  Such as slower turnover of the engine.
Half the time I think when my engine is cold it will do that. Frozen ACR when cold ?

Approaching 50,000 miles now on my Bike.

Not tappet adjustment.  Rocker arm knocking rocker box wall, small grind removed the wall.

The BIG CLUNK may be your STARTER beginning to fail. Upgrade made in 2008.

I highly recommend you read/watch my MOTORKOTE  thread.

I investigated the crap out of it before I put it in.  I no longer have a warranty from H-D.
MOTORKOTE IS MY INSURANCE NOW.  IT'S IN EVERY ENGINE I OWN......J
