09 SERG Andrews 54 & Headwork
« on: February 18, 2010, 08:20:27 PM »

Finally got it done. 108.76 HP & 117.19 torque. Was 83.96 HP & 101.66 torque before the build.
Here is my set up:

09 SERG
Andrews 54 cams
adjustable pushrods
heads done by Fred's Heads, Renton Wash.
approx. 9.9 compression
.030 head gaskets
SE Heavy Breather
V&H Power Duals header
stock muffler with 2.0 Fullsac baffles
SE Pro Super Tuner

I have attached the dyno sheet but I am not happy with it. It looks weird and
it was a fourth gear run. That is what they gave me so I am stuck with it until
I line up another tuner/dyno run. The build was done by Sound Harley in Marysville, WA
I have put about 200 miles on it & the bike is powerful and smoother than stock.

Hope this helps some one make a decision on build & cams

Looks good. You retained the low end torque and grew the hp and tq later. I know fred good guy.
Sound Harley not sure about their tuning, in the past the operator wore a gas mask due to poor air quality in the cell, that turned me off and that air quality does affect the tune. Hopefully they fixed it. I talked to the new guy they have tuning and he had his rap together at least.
Nice build and this especially shows the compatability of the pipe, it is working well.

Scotty,

If you are not happy with the tune and as you are in Seattle, not very far from Abbotsford BC, if the weather is OK take a drive up to see JARZ Performance, Lee and Darrell are probably the best tuners in the NW US & Canada, along with Latus.

Thanks for the info on the guys up North. The bike seems to be running pretty good
but I am not happy with the way the dyno sheet was printed out. The tuner that did the bike
said that a 4th gear print out was normal and if I am not mistaken our six speeds should
be printed out in 5th gear. Correct me if I am wrong.
Anyway, I may give the guys up North a call and see what they would want to check it again.

Thanks

Sound should give you the Dynojet run file and the SEST tuning file on CD. There are many reasons for this.
You can download Winpep 7 from Dynojet site and display the run any way you want. Ask them for the 6th gear run, that is direct drive and the defacto standard. BTW I am not on the standards board and just parroting what other tuners have told me regarding this "standard".

I might be wrong but I thought 5th was direct drive and 6th like a overdrive... I also thought that the
industry standard is a 5th gear print out for final numbers with our six speeds.
Thanks for the suggestion to ask Sound Harley for my run file...

Scotty
2009 gets the 68 rear pulley from the 66 used previously
Gear ratios
......2009..........................2008/07
1) 9.593.............................9.312
2) 6.650.............................6.421
3) 4.938.............................4.774
4) 4.000.............................3.926
5) 3.407.............................3.279
6) 2.875.............................2.790

6th is direct, and high at that
Therefore on earlier 5 speeds 5th was the test gear and on these new biles 6th. Some will test in 5th for fear of blowing a tire as the speeds obtained exceed the tire rating.
For more discussion on the topic I suggest looking on the Latus website. Stegman is a sharp guy

I typically tune in 4th and make final pulls in 5th, STD correction. Industry standard? Lol...We are talking Harley's guys.
I have made a couple of 6th gear pulls but after seeing 163 MPH recorded I realized it was not a very bright thing to do.
Anybody know what the stock tires are rated for? I could only imagine the carnage if the rear tire came apart at 160mph in the dyno room.

Scotty. 4th gear SAE? Your numbers look great! Be happy! That thing must feel awesome.

Thanks for all the feed back guys.. I feel much better now with my dyno print out & numbers.
Originally seeing the 4th gear pull made me think that there was something fishy going on. I have
come to realize that it is sort of up to the tuner with just a small difference in numbers depending on
what gear is used.

I appreciate this web site & all the knowledgeable people that contribute to it.

Hey Scotty just finished mine. And after the hassel I'm not sure I would do the cams and gasket with Steve again. The power is a little wider than it was from stage one but I only picked up 2 ft/lbs of torque (106) I did pick up 10 hp, 97 now. I was very disappointed in the torque. But the gear change made a huge difference.

Hey Mike, Your numbers are sneaking up there.. Like I said in your other post I think the 54 cams need a little more compression then you are getting with the gaskets.. Of course if you take the heads off to get more compression then some head work may be in order.. It never ends :-\
