Harley does not require a dealership to do a total redo just because a store is 10 years old. That being said, there are updates to fixtures that may, or may not be required/suggested, both free standing and on the walls.  And yes, that can cost tens of thousands of dollars; however, not doing the updates does not have dire consequences.
If I was wrong in what I stated it was from information I got from the dealer. It was not ment to miss lead any one.

Here's the dealer numbers from H-D, printed in the investors relationship info and available off their website.

Seems that with all the change things stay fairly level in the number of dealerships, down 33 from the 2008 high of 686.  The Secondary retail are also down 28 from a high of 104 in 2007 which certainly adds to the total number of stores closed but still not extremely dramatic in my mind, these are not the mall locations but satellite retail units.

Mall stores "alternative" retail outlets in H-D lingo are actually up to 86 from 2007 low number of 68 which offsets some of the secondary retail store loss as mall stores are owned by dealers as well.

Thanks for that info, and especially for the link to the investor site.  When they update that to include 2011 results, we'll be able to see how this year has been for HD overall.

Thanks for the suggestion, but there's just a slight possibility that not all closing dealerships (especially those overseas) have been reported in this thread.

Pierce Harley-Davidson in DeKalb, Ill. corrects earlier reports: Pierce Harley-Davidson not closing, but being sold.

And there's this.   More crap from China at hyper-inflated prices. HD actually disgust me.  :(

Calling business decisions "heartless" disqualifies any article anyway  ;)

Never had a problem with anything made in Australia, including Castaloy wheels on HDs.  With items made in China, however, the quality reflects the cost to the OEM, in my experience, Hans.

So the quality of [all] HDs heads steadily south, while the price continues to rocket north.  :(
