My new 17 CVO Street Glide
« on: September 24, 2016, 12:55:22 AM »

The new motor has completely intrigued me and I love the looks of the red SG. On a whim last weekend I went to all the stores in San Diego looking if I could see one but no luck. The largest dealer (San Diego) actually told me they wouldn't have one until the end of the year so I just told myself "to get over it". When I went home that night I for the heck of it reached out to the small dealer in Bend OR where I bought my 12 Roadglide almost 5 years ago because they were the only dealer on the west coast at that time that had my bike. I knew the odds were very small but I sent them a web message late at night. Next morning the same sales mgr that sold me my bike called me and told me they just got that bike Sat morning and it was available.
Long story short I bought it and they are now installing the stage 3 kit for me as well as a long list of mods already. Steve at Fullsac doing my mufflers next week as I really am going to try and not screw up the warranty on this one and hoping that 117 will "sing"!
Flying up on Oct 13th and really looking forward to the ride back down through some amazing roads. Might even be able to talk JC into meeting me in No Cal and really having some fun up there!

It should look like this.  I picked mine up yesterday.  First ever batwing.  I have always been a road glide guy, and still am.  Im anxious for Steve to have a head pipe and baffles ready for it.

Great story. Congrats. Sounds like it was meant to be. Look forward to seeing what kind of numbers you get on the Dyno. Thinking of doing the same thing this winter. D&D said they will have a Fatcat for it by the end of the year which should help performance and sound I've got the street cannons now which are ok but quieter than I'd like.

Nothing like being estranged from your true love.   :P

He's not suffering to much Greg.  He still has his SERG with the 124" in the garage to keep him company for a few weeks.

Alan's an addict.....on the 12 SERG he went from the stock 110" to the 120" to the 124".  Now the 124" was put in only 4-6 months ago and he's already bored with it so now he's going after the 17 SESG.  At least he's crossing back over from the Gold Wing fairing to a Harley fairing!   :P

Truth is that while I was definitely "intrigued" by the new M8 motor, I really wasn't thinking seriously about buying one until a couple of weekends ago I saw my 124 started running crazy hot and when I stopped after 130 miles I had burned over a quart of oil. Called my tech and he said "I told you we might have to rebuild the top end every 20,000 miles the way you ride and I think thats the problem". I currently have 18,000 miles on that motor. I took my bike into the shop very frustrated and thats when all the "stuff" on the new bike started happening.
My justification on all this (JC is right, I am an addict..) is that I am going to keep this bike under warranty including the 7 yr ESP since the 117 kit qualifies for that.
I figure now that Harley's are kinda like Jaguar cars, you need 2 so you have something to ride while 1 is always in the shop...

I have now spoke to 2 service mgr's from 2 separate dealers and both told me that if you change the exhaust if will not void the warranty other than the exhaust warranty. 1 of those guys I know well and trust and he said that with all the publicity going on about Harley and getting spanked, really not much is different for the dealers that were following the rules. Unless a failure can be attributed to the aftermarket exhaust there will not be an issue. He did say that some of the "look the other way" warranty claims they have all done (he definitely has done that for me warranting 2 comps with S&S motor..) are over but I personally can live with  that.
P.S. sorry pics are upside down.

Well after 3 CVO road glides in a row, and more than 150,000 miles between the 3 I'm on the new Street glide.  I still prefer the Road Glide but the vented street glides are much better than the 13 and earlier.  New engine is great, lets hope it lasts.

Mine dealer recommends waiting for TTS tuner.  HD some times want to check the ECM for warranty.  With TTS it can be flashed to stock.   My dealer said don't worry about an exhaust change or other normal stuff.

I agree with that. My plan is to wait for the TTS and pipes. Wanted to get the 117 motor kit in on original warranty since that won't change, just how it gets tuned.
BTW, like you this is my first "batwing" as I have always rode Roadglides as well. We will see..

It is a 1200 mile ride home from the dealer I bought it from so I will definitely know when I get home..

Just over 600 miles on mine so far.  I'm liking the new motor a lot, hope it is reliable.  The cat is huge and feels like it is really holding the power back and generating lots of heat.

800 miles later, 117 kit coming in off of back order, yesterday I bought it home with the 117 installed.  The advantage of doing it after taking delivery, I got to feel the difference. I can share this for it was a rainy day and a short ride home, TORQUE! The Street Cannons truly woke up, with the higher compression I had a feeling they would. The mechanic that did the build returned from the test ride w a huge smile on his face (yes I was there for heat cycles and test ride 😀). I know there is a lot left on the table using the Harley Tuner and can't wait till guys like FM and others have a header, better A/C and a tune available. As Alan mentioned this is now all under warranty. Headers and tuners can come off if there is any sort of issues.

MOCO decided I guess to reduce cost, they don't provide the updated badging. No worries though for when the bike is fired up and one listens, it's truly apparent it's not a 114 anymore. Nice lopie cam at the low idle sounds great.

Can't the dealer get you a set of 117 badges from Harley since  they are included in a "twinky 117 upgrade?

Thanks for answering a couple of questions I had on this upgrade plan.

Do they make you buy the new SE tuner for the 117 upgrade or just flash the stock factory one?

Regards

Jerry they don't include them in the 117 Upgrade kit, nor do they in the 114 Upgrade kit for a 107.
Yes you must purchase the SE Pro Street Tuner for the dealer to perform the flash.

Yes you must purchase the SE Pro Street Tuner for the dealer to perform the flash.

SE TUNER--S.it!  Now you gotta pay for 2 tuners.  I was hoping that since it was a factory upgrade they would just flash it from their official HD database.   TTS is worth it! You'll get more performance and get rid of the speed limiters too.

THE 117 badges I was referring to are included in the Twin Cam (aka "twinky motor) upgrade kit. Too bad you can't just order those separately IF they'll fit properly on your new barrels.

Enjoy your new ride!! I am following your adventures and experiences.

I would hope they will come up with updated badging for the derby cover. Love the look of the new one. I somehow doubt the 117 badges from the TC 117 kit will fit on the new barrels and doubt you can order them separately anyway

Great story. Congrats.
I've got the street cannons now which are ok but quieter than I'd like.

Hey , just heard these street canon mufflers today on a demo bike at my dealers while I was checkng over my new bike being delivered in two days, they sounded nice and louder than I thought , however when I spoke to service manager they said they removed the last baffle held in with 3 security screws , which made a huge difference to sound they said, not sure if you guys in states have this baffle as over here they have to be EU compliant, any ways may be worth trying if you do!!

Same bars are being installed on mine.  I just left to go off shore for three weeks, so when I get home the black 14 Monkey bars will be on and the heated grips from a 17 CVO Limited will be on.

I sure you are far enough off shore to miss hurricane Mathew's wrath.

We're here in Jax hunkered down and riding out the worst until midnight.

Hopefully there will be minimal damage done both here and in Daytona. We're heading down there next Thursday through Sunday for Biketoberfest.

STAY SAFE!!

Adventure begins O Dark Thirty tomorrow. Jumping on a plane to Bend OR to pick up bike. JC has done a great route back through Yosemite and No Cal to bring her home. Looks like I will have to deal with weather most of the way but looking forward to the trip!

So let my share the good news and the bad news- Good news is I love e the bike and even with the corked up exhaust I was very impressed with the torque of the motor. Kinda funny it runs the complete opposite of my RG with the 124. On my 124 I need to run above 3000 rpm's to make the motor happy. On a hot day I will even get pinging under 3000 rpm's and it just doesn't feel right though to be fair, above 3000 it rips like crazy! the new bike with the 117 stage 3 kit has crazy power very low in the revs. Twist the grip at 2000 rpm's (which I am definitely not used to) and the back end breaks loose and power stays on hard up to about 4000 rpm's where it doesn't really like to be much. Everything else about the bike works terrific as well IMO. Love the way the bags and forks lock with the remote fob, stock suspension is hugely improved and overall bike just feels great. Couldn't be happier with the bike!
Bad news is if you have been paying attention to the weather in the Pacific Northwest is is a complete sh-- show! Picked up bike around 3 PM in Bend OR and it was raining but I didn't really worry to much about it other than think how dirty my brand new bike was going to get. About 5 miles in the "freak show" started. Wing gust up to 50 mph with rain like I have never seen in real life (not just rode in). I had to go about 200 miles to get to Medford OR on the CA border and had to go through a 6000 elevation mountain pass. Fog was so bad at elevation I could only try and tuck behind a big truck and not let him get far enough away from me so I couldn't see him while balancing the amount of rain coming off his wheels (not to mention the sideways rain hitting me).
When I finally got to the hotel (very happy to see that place..) and turned on the weather channel I saw what they were calling a "historic storm" for the rest of the weekend all the way down to almost So Cal. JC had put together a amazing route for me and when looking at it, a bunch will be closed to flooding. Even thinking about just jumping on I5 and power down I would have to go through Shasta which was predicting 80 MPH winds and crazy amount of rain.
Long story short I took my bike to the local dealer and am now having it shipped to me as I can't get the time off to go back up and get it.
So after planning this ride for a month and being almost as fired up about the ride as much as the new bike, I am sitting at home without either posting up on the forum...

Alan I have a better idea......and much cheaper for you than shipping your bike and you'll get it quicker, too.

Next weekend is supposed to be hotter than usual.  Get me a plan ticket and I'll fly up to Medford Fri afternoon and I'll ride your bike back....deliver it to you Sun afternoon!  I'll even cover my own hotel room and gas.  Just tryin to help a brother out.  :nixweiss:

Yeah, me too.  I'll gladly fly to wherever your bike is an ride it home...I mean to your house.  I've been in that same kind of weather: one hurricane and one tornado, plus countless lessor weather encounters.  I am glad you chose the smart choice!!  Leave it and get home safe.  Those decisions don't come without experience.

Other than that minor inconvenience, and though my bike is nowhere within your envelope as far as performance goes, the new M8 is over the top.  Only time will tell if it has legs.

I couldn't take any pics because of how hard the rain was coming down, didn't want to kill my IPhone by trying to snap a pic. I did keep thinking about pulling under a overpass to take a pic but couldnt find a da-- overpass or any hiding from the downpour!

You going to love it!  Enjoy the ride Saturday on your new bike.

I'm really liking the addition of the Yaffe 14" Monkey bars, much more comfortable.  Adding heated grips was sure worth it as they were used when it was 49 degrees out.

Picked it up from the dealer today and did my first ride without pouring rain and loved it! Unfortunately I only went about 30 miles on the freeway as I had to get back to work. Like Dave I did the 14 inch Yaffee bars with heated grips (thank God I had those in that crazy cold storm I got caught in) that feel very comfortable.
Cant wait for Sat where I can carve up some mountain roads..

I will say I am struggling with the stock windshield which sucks because I love how it looks. I had my dealer order me the Memphis Shades 8.5 spoiler shield that will be in next week. That will at least solve my problem of not being able to fit a fairing pouch with the stock shield though I am not ready to "throw in the towel" yet. Planning on doing 4-500 miles thus weekend and am hoping I will get used to it. Also not sure until I try it that the other shield will work better though can't imagine it won't

That is my dilemma, I love the looks of it.  However the wind noise is bad as is the wind at about sunglass height.  The harley 10" is plain ugly.  I have heard the Klock does a good job and has good looks.  Still looking at options.

Ya mean you're headed to Nor Cal?  :huepfenlol2:

Man I'm happy for you Alan that you finally got it back home and are up riding without any further delay.  I'm thinking you've already got the  rings seated (up in Oregon in that storm) and so the break in is done and now you can really twist the throttle.

Hey, (and for all the So Cal guys and gals) this Sat. is the Escondido Tamale Festival....

 http://www.escondidotamalefestival.org/

My bike is up at Jim's but Babe and I will drive up for this.  I believe Ernie and Helena will probably make the trip (since they live in Escondido).

I've used Windvest on my last four bikes.  Many of the Nor Cal members on this forum use the Windvest.  They work great for sending the wind and the noise over the top of your head instead of directly in to your face.  :2vrolijk_21:

I've used the Bagger shield on the RG for the last 4 years and have really loved it. Not sure about on a batwing. Its a 2 piece screen with the lower part smoked and it looks great for shot rides and speeds less than 55 or so. But when running the Highway or long trips at speed you just loosen 3 bolts and flip the top portion up and it then will block the wind. From 10 foot or more away its hard to tell its up. Cool product

I love the look of the CVO windshield, but after a week of riding, I installed the Klockwerks 5" I kept of my '15SGS.
The flat top of the CVO shield was blocking too much of my view off to the sides, where as the Klockwerks is a bit rounded on top. PLus it redirects s the air flow a tad more.

So I finally got to play with my new toy! Did around 325 miles today playing in the mountains (hills, sorry JC) and backroads all around San Diego. I have to say I couldn't be more impressed with this bike. Very forgiving and easy to ride with great torque and power down low. The new features like the locking bags and forks, TPMS, and even the Boom Box (new to me) is great IMHO. As far as the actual GPS part I would say I prefer the Garmin 590 I have on my Roadglide but it is nice to have it so accessible and easy to reach though I am trying to teach myself to use the hand controls to navigate around.
All in all though it certainly took a while, I couldn't be happier and impressed with what they came up with. I am of course prepared to have some issues due to it being the first year for not only the motor but a few other goodies but I do think HD might have hit this one out of the park!

The remote lock / unlock on the 17 is a huge improvement over the remote lock and unlock on the 15 SERGU I had.  On the 15 you had to be right up next to the bike, some times it would work, some times it wouldn't.  Could be frustrating at times.  The 17 works from 20 feet away every time.  Sure glad HD updated the lock feature so it works right.

Couldn't agree more Dave. Love it. On my RGU I have to get near the front of the gas tank on top for it to work properly.

I'm running a 9 inch freedom shield dark tint it looks sweet and works great. You can see through it at night no problem with the LED's.

I really love the look of the stock shield but I had 2 issues that were driving me nuts-first was not being able to use a fairing pouch with it since I am used to my Roadglide with the glove boxes and I hate not having anywhere to put my glasses and other assorted "stuff". Second was getting hammered on the freeway with the wind. I am 6.3 with only a 34 inseam so I it very high. On my Roadglide I use a 18 inch Cee Bailey which I still see over easily. Been asking on our forum for ideas and appreciate the responses. Decided to try the Memphis Shades 8 1/2 inch Spoiler shield they make after reading a review from a guy that has similar height issues and said he tried multiple shields and this worked the best. Put it on today with the HD fairing pouch and amazed how little air now I am getting. Feel like I could juggle ping pong balls at 80 mph.
I certainly don't think it looks quite as good as the stock wind splitter but actually very happy with its look. The spoiler function allows me to get a much shorter shield than if it didn't have that feature.
Wanted to share. Lousy pic (and messy garage) with my phone but hopefully you can get a good idea.

It is a 1200 mile ride home from the dealer I bought it from so I will definitely know when I get home..

I bought my 2016 from Harley Davidson of Charlotte, flew down from Cleveland and road it home, I thought 525 miles was long, you will have to stop and get the 1000 mile service!

My local dealer (Biggs in San Marcos outside of San Diego) had their guy do it for me as well as a Yaffee license frame. He is a talented guy and turned it quickly. A few months ago I was in there and I saw a tour pak he did for someone else and I loved his work

Wow some how I missed your response from November, I would have bought from Hale's in Mansfield, they always treated good, especially the guys in the parts department, also would have tried Stinger or Southeast, but that would be it, but nobody had a 2016 in black and I didn't want a 2017, it would have been a lot easier, I could have trade in my 2015 Street Glide, but it worked out ok, fun ride home from Charlotte and ended up selling the Street Glide a couple of weeks ago.

Somehow "save money" and Harley CVO bikes for me are the definition of "oxymoron". The $250 for the paint on the shields are the least of my problems. Just saying...

The $250.00 is not over priced when you look at the labor involved. Set spray gun up for primer, then base black , then red and final clear coat. That is four times the spray gun must be cleaned, there is a small amount of materials and graphic layout, probably 4 hours labor involved, no one works for free!
