Good point and I wondering about the circumstances as well. I do usually wear boots and sometimes tennis shoes.  Never have I worn Flip Flops. Now my lady riders have but they are not always putting their feet down (yes I know they should wear proper foot protection as well).  The picture does look like the skin was taken off up to the ankle. How in the world could that happen?

Every time I hear (or in this case see) something about flipflops/shorts/etc, I think about the couple I saw a few years ago around the Newport, TN area.  We passed them going the other direction on a two lane road.  He was in shorts, tank top and flip flops.  SHE was in shorts, halter top and bare footed.  While I suppose they thought they looked cool and relaxed on a Sunday afternoon ride, my mind went straight to them wrecking and both their feet, legs, arms hitting the pavement and then pretty much what you see in the first post of this thread.
I feel for the person in the picture but knowing better and actually doing it are two different things....lots of rehab in their future.

That is really a horrible thing,,, I would never ride without proper footwear.  Just a dumbass thing to do,, I just don't get people.

Wow! That's a high price to pay to get your feet in the breeze. Looks like the flip-flops cost him a foot because that doesn't even look salvageable, man that's gotta hurt!

That picture sure makes you think. I ran out last week on my bike to grab a quick ingredient from the grocery. I actually road in shorts, no shoes at all and no helmet. I suppose I figured a quick ten minute ride would be OK without the proper gear. Seeing this makes me a bit hesitant to pull that stunt again.

We are very fortunate on this site to have many firemen/emts and police officers who willingly share their real life on the job experiences with the membership.

That looks as if the foot was salvageable, the person would have to overcome tremendous pain in recovery. Not many people think of what can happen. I'm retired army, a split second is all it takes to change or end a life.

It's better to do below knee amputation in that case. I've seen these cases in my work. It's better to use proper riding boots, always.
