Oil temp ?
« on: May 22, 2015, 10:07:34 PM »

Another oil temp question  :nixweiss: Went out for my first ride today of the year, on my new 124lc 1200 km since installed about 750 mi hit oil temps of 294 degrees on the harley dip stick, only 86 degrees out today . I ran about 45 minutes on the highway 70mph and 3 minutes in town 30mph ,no stop and go checked oil temp and thats what i found .I know that these motors are tight and have to break in but i think that is a little warm. What do you guys think?

Mine is usually around 250. I use the harley dipstick with the digital read out.
What is a "124lc" :confused5: :nixweiss:

I just took my first ride on my 124 today and the dipstick temp never went over 225. I did put a Ultra Cool on it which I think might have had a lot to do with that and I did not run it very hard as it was the first ride. Mine is not a lc.

Dipstick may be off. Boil a pot of water, check for accuracy.

Checked dipstick in boiling water ,was 12 degrees higher than another thermometer but at 295 that would put my oil at about 275-280 . Maybe its best not even to look  :nixweiss:

Measure with a heat gun for another reading. May want to bring back to your tuner as it could be running a little lean. If anything you want the tune to be a little on the rich side for break in.

IMHO, your running very lean to achieve those high temps on a LC 124! My HC124 carbed barely makes 190 on 100 degree days! AFR around 13.8/1 while cruising at 80 mph!
The hottest I've seen in 8 yrs of running my HC124 is 235F, sitting in traffic, stuck at an intersection in Sturgis, outside temps 107F for 30+ minutes idling ahead one bike at a time!
Air cooled engines, IMO, cannot be run at 14.1+ without damage from excessive heat.
I like to see 13/1 under heavy load, and 13.5-8 under cruise, any leaner will cause excess heat. Buffalo

I now have put around 650 miles on my 124HC including a few hours in Yuma AZ today which was around 92 degrees and my oil temo hit 235 1 time when I was in the middle of that and stop and go. Usually stayed right around 210

Check around for a certified accurate long thermometer and use it to directly read the oil temp (and throw that H-D dipstick in the junk box).  No sense obsessing about the oil temperature until you know exactly what you have.

If it's really running 280°F or more in normal riding (I assume you aren't breaking it in by beating the snot out of it or letting it idle a half hour at a time), then that sure seems excessive and I'd have a talk with the engine builder.  Just running a bit lean isn't going to cause this.  Think about it, the stock Harley's run extremely lean and don't run 280°F oil temps in 80 degree weather.

What did  the HD stick  read in the boiling water? If the tune is not way off I'm betting your about 210 deg. F, which is OK. 240 deg. with synthetic is nothing to worry about.

The LC124" or the .640 cam-equipped version shouldn't really have any heat issues.

Called installer yesterday , yes he agrees that is getting hot ,figures the break in tune has somehow leaned it self out . They would like me to put a few more miles on it before they re dyno it but I believe I my be doing damage to the motor that will show up sooner than later, probably right after I have no more warranty  :nixweiss:  I thought these break in tunes are suppose  to be rich if anything!
