1000 Mile Service on '15 CVO SG
« on: July 29, 2016, 09:12:43 PM »

Hey guys,
I was thinking of doing my own 1st service on the bike rather than taking to the dealer.  Is there any reason not to do it myself?  It has 438 miles on it as I received it from the seller, so in about 600 miles I want to order all the maintenance items I would need.  I've used Amsoil in the past on my '13 Fatboy Lo.
Can anyone give me a correct list I need to order?
Thanks!

I have always let the dealer do the first one, that way they get to
re check everything and than I do all my own maint. Just keep good records of what you use and do. Along with keeping recieps, also put the milage on them.

I just have issues with 1- letting the dealer handle my ride...  2- paying the overcharged dealer costs... 3- trusting that they really went over the bike as they should have...
Sure some are better than others.   But Long Island dealers are in a league of their own, and not in a good way.

No reason to not do it yourself if you have the tools & ability. However I would suggest you get all the manuals (and document you followed the MoCo's required checklist of/for those services) for your bike and save receipts of the products (oil, filter, gaskets, etc.) of those services.

There is absolutely no reason to pay the dealership to change fluids and pretend to do all the other recommended "checks".  I do suggest you invest in the shop manual for the bike, and a belt tension gauge.  If you already have all the hand tools needed to change fluids and check fastener torque, there's nothing the dealer would do that you can't do yourself.

If you go to the Harley website under the "Owners" tab you can get the maintenance checklists and other useful information.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/content/h-d/en_US/home/owners.html

Download the one you need, print it out, indicate the date and mileage you performed the service, note the condition of each item on the checklist (OK, adjusted, lubricated, etc.), sign it and keep it along with receipts for any fluids, filters, or other parts in your records.  None of this is legally required to maintain warranty coverage btw, but IMHO it is a good practice anyway.

I didn't know Harley has a checklist to do your own maintenance.  This is a good start!   :cherry:  Thanks!

It's the same list you will find in the shop manual.  On that web site you will also find any updates for the Infotainment System, recall status for your VIN, and some other possibly useful information.  Spend some time looking around on the site.

Jerry,
I logged into the site, entered my VIN, and yet I lose the maintenance schedule section.  Am I doing something wrong?

Well, I found a generic maintenance schedule for Touring models here.  http://www.adventureharley.com/touring-maintenance-schedule

Does anyone have a good place to buy the shop manual?

I did my own. . I couldn't see 500.00 for an oil change.  The only thing I did notice is that I do hear some noise when aggressively applying the rear brake.  So I will take it to the dealer for that. . Anyone know what that could be? . . "it's like a loud Humm. . . Thanks Stuart.

Could the rear rotor be warping if you are aggressively applying brake?

I'm not sure why you can't access the maintenance schedule, unless the site was having a problem.  I've had some issues lately on the Parts and Accessories site with bad links, perhaps the same thing is going on with the main site. :nixweiss:

If you want a manual quickly, a local dealership would be the first place to check to see if they have them in stock.  You could also order them online from one of the discount dealerships like Surdyke, but of course it will take longer to get your hands on the manuals.

If you plan to do as much on the bike yourself as possible, you should look at buying the 2015 Touring Manual, the 2015 FLHXSE Supplement Manual, and the 2015 Electrical and Diagnostic Manual.  They are a good investment for anyone who wrenches on their own bikes, or even for those who just want to know more about how things on their bike are supposed to work.

2015 Touring Service Manual  P/N 99483-15
2015 FLHXSE Service Manual Supplement   P/N 99600-15
2015 Touring Model Electrical and Diagnostic Manual  P/N  99497-15

Add the "Parts Manual" to the items Jerry has mentioned above in the manuals you should get for your bike.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm that good.  I'm capable of the more simple maintenance at best along with simple electrical and parts add on type.  I leave the serious stuff to the pros.
I suspect for my needs this is the one I need specific to normal maintenance on mine?  2015 FLHXSE Service Manual Supplement   P/N 99600-15.
I've spent most of my life on bikes and know my way around, but my real passion for the last 20 years was as a race car driver in the German World, ie: Porsche/BMW.  Did some of my maintenance on those but left the big fabrication to my team.

If you only buy one manual, I'd do the full 2015 Touring Model Service Manual.  The only things in the supplement are those items unique to the CVO.  The full manual has all the maintenance items, wiring diagrams, and basically everything other than unique CVO items.  As for the parts manual Fired00d mentioned, those are nice to have but you can also look the parts up online for free.  This is one  such site:

Thanks for the clarification.  And I saw that you can go thru the entire parts manual online.  That's pretty awesome actually!

As cvostu done, I change the fluids myself...couldn't see taking it in 1 week after I bought it and spend $500. for a oil change. And it's going to need its 5k service befor I know it... I've owned for 3 weeks and have 3.5k miles on it all ready   :nixweiss:
