Compensator Knock..
« on: August 24, 2015, 03:51:17 PM »

Lately I have been hearing a subtle knock coming from the primary side as well as the tell-tale whirring sound.  So I am guessing its either a loose nut, or failing comp.  I am nearing 17k miles so I guess I'd be one of the lucky ones for getting as many miles as I have.  2007 SERK didnt come with the SE comp as I understand.
Guess its a good time to add this to my list of things I have to do over the winter! LOL.

The comp will rattle once they have some miles. You need to check chain tension carefully too, too tight will cause the IPB bearing to make noise and fail. It appears the only real fix to date may be the Baker Comp. Harley has made several changes in comps since 07, none have proved to be a total fix, late 14/15 seem better but require considerable changes to work (new primary case among them).
Check out the bellville washer stack dimensions, they must be within specs to provide the right load on the comp. Excess wear anywhere can make it bind or become sticky.
GMR has a system to help solve the lack of lubricants the comps receive on the older series, HD kind of copied it in later models. fwiw twinotter
