I also took JC's advice and just bought the Passport 2 after getting nailed by radar last weekend. I have the guys at Street Noyz in San Diego doing the install for me next week. Everything they have done so far on my bike has been super clean including installing 7x10 Focals in the saddlebag lids that most people said couldn't be done. i will post pics when I get it done next week.

I'll be looking forward to seeing those pics, Alan.  Thanks!

I've used radar detectors for many, many yrs in my car/truck/streetrod and have been saved many times.  Few yrs back, I mounted a Passport on my SE Ultra for the trip to Sturgis.  Had mine suction cupped to the windshield and velcroed but also inside a sandwich bag for waterproofing.

Didn't review all the posts from above,  but are the newer units waterproof :nixweiss:

If you never exceed the speed limit like me then you dont need one.

The Passport Max that I bought a couple of years ago didn't even claim to be water resistant.  But......the down pour and then the hail storm that I got caught in on my way in to Ouray, Colo. the radar detector was the last thing I thought about.  It was soaked by the time I pulled over to remove it.  It's still working.

On one of the radar forums it was suggested a shower cap secured by an elastic hair band.  That would go on and off very quickly.....but I just haven't gone there yet.

Alan, if you get in to that web site very much, they actually have laser jammers for bikes.  Haven't gone there, either.  :nixweiss:

I still have a Road tech  mount and detector(ruggedized, waterproof, left mounting/viewing and louder version of the Passport 8500)....have not been able to bring myself to drill the inner fairing though.
Alternately, I might buy a new Passport and mount it to the windshield to the left of the two pouch bag....maybe utilizing some parts from the RK nav mount.
I'm not liking the look of the 'pole' mount.

I have the Escort 9500Ci built in and love it. Control module and radar sensor is under Windshield. Laser diffuser is between forks. I have my display set up to read digital speed off of GPS. I mounted a Radar Screamer so I can hear it at any speed. New Escort stuff with GPS and Database updates is great. I have Passport Max too I use for rental cars.

I shot an email off to Radar Roy, and asked him about the pros and cons of the detector being behind a medium smoke windshield.  He came back right away and said with Radar it would be no problem, but with picking up a Laser, it would be, as it won't make it thru the smoke tint well.

I think this echoes what you said earlier, JC?

I'm looking at the Escort Passport now, and the Techmount handlebar mount.  Gotta go out and take some measurements on the bike and then factor in the mounting arm and size of the detector itself.  Try to imagine if it'll be in my way and by how much.

There are a couple of different speed measuring devices available to law enforcement, the most popular stationary radar units are X, K, T and Y band, mobile units are Tribar (MDR), BEE III etc.... and then there are different models of laser, most are LT1.

What does this mean to you????

Radar operates with a big fat beam in a "V" from the device to what ever is out there, regardless of band, it will pick up the biggest/fastest (in that order) moving object... so if you are on you bike doing 100mph passing a heavy truck doing 60mph - the unit will read 60 until you are far enough from the tuck to register as the biggest and fastest in the beam.

If you're solo on the road then it's pretty easy to figure out that you're the speed demon!

Laser is a completely different story... a laser beam is emitted from the unit and placed directly on the item being measured, the only restriction is how far the operator can see... and if the unit is equipped with a high quality scope... that can amount to miles and miles!

Operators who are trained on both methods often don't even bother with radar anymore because the laser is so accurate.

When it comes to radar detectors, many motorcycle specific models are good, what is important to note are the restrictions placed on the devices by each respective State and or Province.

In Ontario for example... it is illegal to be operating a radar detector period, and if an officer suspects that you have one there is a warantless search authority provided in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA)... which means that if an officer thinks you've got one he/she is allowed under law to rip your bike apart to find it!

And don't think that you can hide it... about ten years ago the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) developed a radar detector detector... so there is a device in existence that receives the signal sent out by your device!

Yes and there are several states here in this country where radar/laser detectors and laser jammers are against the law.  Those states are listed on Radar Roy's web site.

Fortunately, for me, those few states are all on the eastern seaboard.  :2vrolijk_21:

I have been using Valentine 1 for over 20 years. Never had a problem with them, sent them in occasionally and had them updated, at first for free then a few years ago they charged me some minor service charge.
Current model has enough changes that I need to replace mine to be latest and greatest, but I have noticed that I seem to use it less and less and now I bet it has been six months since I turned it on. Used to be my constant companion, now not so much. I do disagree with whoever said they threw there's away. I understand the first guy is vulnerable but with todays traffic how often is it that someone is not some distance ahead of you and they will get zapped close enough to you to activate your detector. If you speed on a regular basis they are a must, and they need to be current technology, being close to current is just not good enough if you are going to push it, ONE ticket saved is worth an impressive amount, your insurance, the points, and additional ticket added to it.

Thank you, Don.  Good words and well chosen.

In the meantime, I have been having difficulty finding a mount that I think will work with the RG.  There is no "look-around" space to the side of the the windshield on the RG like there is on the SG's or Limited's.  Our windshields are wider and the handlebars are not wide enough to move the unit out far enough to the left (or right) to clear the edge of the windshield.
Frankly, I'm at a loss for how to proceed.  I want the unit mounted up top by me, and don't want it remote (so far as I know).  I've see handlebar and clutch lever mounts and the "extra hole" mount on the clutch lever, which my bike doesn't have, and I'm not sure none of them will work.
Has anybody out there installed one on a RG where it wasn't looking thru the windshield?  Who's got an idea out there that I haven't thought of yet (which would be an easy thing for most of you!).
Thanks again for all your comments and pictures.  You guys have been great.
