Stick in all 3 HOLES!
« on: October 01, 2013, 05:41:25 PM »

How can I cover these 3 holes when I take my passenger floorboards off to make it look better?  I normally leave them on at all times, but thought since I'm headed to PCB solo I would just take them off but these 3 rusty old holes look like chit.  Any ideas?  I would put the one chrome bolt from the boards back into 1 of the holes, but it only goes in about 1/2 way.

You can clean them with some Wd-40. You can also find black, rubber plugs at any hardware store.

Clean all the rust stains first, then you could find some plugs like the one that is already in one of the holes from the factory, or just buy hole plugs in the appropriate size from any decent hardware store.  Some very short chrome button head or socket head bolts would also fill the holes if you want shiny.

I leave my floorboards on but still have 2 holes showing so I bought some black plastic plugs, maybe the hardware store called them caps, and installed them. Had to trim a little bit off one side for the hole closest to the passenger board mount but it looks a lot better than a rusty hole!

Makes you wonder why there is already a chromed Screamin Eagle something or other to bolt on there

I actually looked in the P&A for a piece of trim to spend $100 on but had to settle for 4 plugs @ $0.29 each

Just my opinion, but this is what I would do.

To start, I would do what others said and clean up the threaded holes.  Run a tape through them to make sure they're clean.

Then I would get some chrome or stainless button head Allen bolts 1/2" long and just thread them into all four holes on each side.

Or if you wanted to just make them blend in, get cad plated button heads and paint the heads black and screw them in.

I would use anti seize on them as well to keep them from locking up if you don't remove them for a year or so.

The button heads look a lot like cherry rivets other than the hex hole in the middle.

Also on button heads the Allen wrench is a size or two smaller than on a standard SHCS.

I originally had the same idea Dan. Only problem is that not all of the holes are threaded, hence the plastic plugs.

I cleaned the holes up on my road glide, the day after I bought it, and put plastic plugs in the holes just like the one in the top in the picture.  I do not run pegs or a passenger seat ever on my road glide.

Okay, here's another solution that will work in all four holes and look good too.

http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Radiator_Apron_Retainers_GM_1619321_p/pas5710-25.htm

Here's the link to the distributor.  They're $3.99 / 25.  Granted that's more than you need, but I have many different types of these plugs and they work great to hold thin stuff to other stuff by just drilling a hole.  They're mainly used in auto body and interior work.  This one will push into the non threaded hole as well as the threaded holes.

If these are too large on the head, this site has many others and list them by diameter and hole size.

Good luck...

This company, Clips and Fasteners.com, also has a wide variety of well nuts, like the ones used to hole windshields on our fairings.

http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Nuts_Well_s/138.htm

Thread: #10-32
Head Diameter: .750"
Overall Length: .703"
Shank Length: .625"
Shank Diameter: .375"
Head Thickness: .078"
Hole Size: 3/8"
Grip Range: .030-.227"
15 Per Package @ $10.46/pack

This may not be the exact size the RG's use, but from memory they should be similar to them and give you all an ideal of what's available outside the MOCO parts chain at a much cheaper price.

They also work great if you're trying to attach something to metal and you don't want to chip the paint or cause rust.

After reviewing their site a bit more, these plugs will probably be a better fit for the rider's peg holes.  Keep in mind that the tapped thread is 3/8", but the through hole is just 5/16".  So these with 3/8" shaft diameter will still push in tight and hold.  I would not get the 5/16" diameter plugs because they will be a bit loose.

http://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Trim_Panel_Retainers_Ford_Chrysler_p/pas5643-50.htm

Head Diameter 5/8"
Stem Diameter 3/8"
Stem Length 3/4"
Replaces Ford Explorer # N807721-S 1993-on
Trunk Lid Latch Chrysler #6504043 1996-on
50 Per Package @ $4.99/pack

This particular plug is for a Ford so maybe a Ford body shop will have them so you can get just the eight you need.

You can by chrome plugs from Moco for about $1.50 each.  OR you can buy the same chrome plugs from Lowes for 40 cents each.  Don't ask me how I know :)
