Fuel mileage
« on: May 08, 2013, 11:27:48 PM »

Hello all!! I hope everyone has had a safe riding season so far. Spring has finally sprung here in Wisconsin so I've had a chance to put some miles on my deuce. Just curious what kind of fuel mileage everyone else is getting. I didn't really check mine last year when I got it. So far the best I've gotten with it was 37 mpg with a mix of mostly highway and a little bit of city. I changed my exhaust and added the cobra fuel tuner. My dealer says my mileage is about right and said about the best I can expect is about 40, it sounds and runs great so it really doesn't matter, just curious.

It is true, most people get 37 to 40. This year I am getting 38 to 40 as well

Last year on my Deuce driving very conservative, mostly on the highway I got 47 mpg on an average fill up, during winter storage, had the bike dyno'd now I have much more "seat of the pants power" but sacrificing my mileage by 7-10 mpg. The only change I have made was I went to a mid grade fuel. At this point I do not believe the dyno time was worth it at all. I do ride as a commuting option back and forth to work so I watch mileage real close dropping down to close to 40 means I do not save any cash over driving my '99 Escort...

I have road about 1k miles this year so far to get my average. I live in northern Illinois so just starting to ride as well.

Thanks for the info Richyunker!! I wish I knew what my mileage was before the new exhaust and tuner. I'd like to put some miles on without the tuner just to see the difference but I'm afraid I might be too lean. My dealer said because I already have the stage 1 that I could change mufflers without any fuel issues but I'm not sure about a full exhaust change.

The dealer is not correct, your bike is a full stage 2. You have the "203" cams and the big bore kit installed at the factory, you have much more torque than any of the off the shelf stage 1 "96", and my guess just as much as the run of the mill "103's" out there.

Look at my post on deuce torque, there is a dyno run with air fuel ratios, the first run is just with a pipe, the air fuel is way too lean according to dealers and techs, it is said that the "magic air fuel ratio" is 13:1, in the automotive and physics world best combustion is 14.7:1, when they tuned your Deuce, where does the air fuel ratio end up? Just curious.

Also I do think they tune these for max HP and Torque, I do wish I knew where my air fuel ratio is at when I am cruising.

Thanks for the info Richyunker!! I didn't have it dyno tuned. I'm running the Cobra FI2000 powerpro auto tuner. Like I said previously the bike runs like a champ and pulls like a freight train but the mileage is not great. I talked to the service tech at my dealer last night and he suggested taking the tuner out and running it for a tank or two just to see what happens to the fuel mileage. It's kind of a pain to pull the tuner so I just dialed it to off. I took it out for a few miles tonight with the tuner off and it runs pretty good but is definitely flatter, no stumbles or anything but just doesn't pull quite like it did. I'm going to run a tank or two like this and see where my mileage is at then I'll try just leaning the tuner from the factory setting a tad and check performance and mileage. I'll keep you posted!!

Hello all!!
Sorry I haven't posted in a while, too many projects going on. Since I was gone I had C & C seats make me a seat. Super craftsmanship and Chuck and Dave are great people to do business with. I really like the looks of the CVO seat but I found it  lacking in the lower back support. The new seat is super comfy!! Anyhow, I ran a couple of tanks through with the tuner completely turned off and my mileage improved quite a bit, was right around 39 with a pretty equal mix of highway and city. Then I set tuner to about 1/2 of cobra's factory setting and fuel mileage dropped some. This passed weekend I went for a 200 mile ride with the tuner set at cobra's recommended setting and my mileage was 42.6 mpg. This was mostly highway cruising at 60 to 70. I guess my poorer mileage was because of my mixed driving and not as much highway driving as I thought.
Here is a pic of my Deuce with the new seat if I remember how to post pics!! :D

I had a RK with 95" kit with the SE heads and 203 cams and it pulled us and the tent trailer like a freight train awesome low and midrange torque. 33mpg untuned just a fuel fattener.
