black shoe sole marks on pipes
« on: August 18, 2014, 12:50:13 PM »

Hello Forum Members, I successfully washed my CVO yesterday, got the seat wet, no problem at all !! Used my Stihl leaf blower (no Air Shammy to use) to help remove water, final wipe down was with several micro fiber towels, nice water mark proof shine !!!

Now, I have another issue to deal with and need some more advice, when washing the exhaust, I noticed melted black shoe sole marks on the exhaust pipe heat shield.

Question, what is the safest way to remove these marks without scratching the chrome pipe heat shield ? Aluminum foil ? 0000 steel wool ? Goo Gone ? what works best ? Thanks to all !!

I've used 0000 steel wool with WD40 to remove those marks and didn't scratch the chrome.  Your results may be different so check on a small spot.

Wenol Chrome polish, it's the best, it comes in 3 grades, get the red tube, you can get it on Amazon or in most auto part stores.  It works on brass, Aluminum  and other metals too.  :2vrolijk_21: Be very careful with 0000 steel wool....I would never use that.

Most walmarts still carry the original easy off oven cleaner and it works 100 percent.
Spray on, leave sit a few hours wipe off.

I seem to recall someone here using oven cleaner to clean their black engine, it wasn't so black upon completion. Be careful.
I've used aluminum foil or an old copper Penney in the past.

To be used on chrome exhaust pipe and it works every time . Common sense needs to be used, only spray the area with boot marks and not any painted areas.

I bet he learned a valuable lesson after he did that?! Ouch

A penny works great...older Canadian ones have a higher copper content.

I've had best results with Easy Off oven cleaner and a copper pad - no marking pipes on any of my past or present scoots. I got tired of doing this nearly every time I'd ride, and installed a Brukus Boot Shield. I would recommend this and they offer a discount to forum members. No more worry or scrubbing the pipes.
