Tires for my FLHRSE4

Of done a search here on the internet and on another forum and I am not seeing the D407 tires any where but at dealers. This was even posted in another thread here. So, are there any alternatives for purchase of the same tire or another kind of tire. Same size seems to be very important for ABS! Looks like Avon makes the Venom R that has the correct front, but a 180/60R17 instead of the 170/60R17 which would be wider correct?? I wonder if Zanotti or the other discount internet places sell these? I will have to check...... Will need ones in about 1K and it is weird that it looks like I need both, usually I can do two backs for every front - at least that was on my 03 Heritage????

The ABS can be contributing to the both being replaced.
And you are correct the 180/60R17 is wider and taller. That would change the speedo and odo.
What is the mileage on the tires??

I have a bit over 6K on the bike and like I said probably another 1K or so on the tires.

The best price I could find on both was Chicago HD The part # listed above for the rear is correct

rear 41998-07 170/60R17.....134.36
front 4199-07A 130/70R18....138.36

Plus 15 shipping is 287.72

Zanotti was close at 295.60

Surdyke did not list the front tire

Picked up a nail a few days ago, rear tire just a little off center...a friend came by with a professional plug kit and fixed it. half the people I talk with say a plug is fine the other half say replace. I am choosing to replace, although I do believe it may have been fine..have 6K on them 08 SERK. Just curious what our groups thoughts are?

Replace it. You've only got two tires keeping your @$$ off the asphalt why chance cutting that by 50%. Better to be safe and ride another day. :2vrolijk_21:

No way I'd run with a plug, but a patch, done from the inside should be OK.  Then again, you'll have all the labor involved with a tire change to do that and still have a compromised tire on your bike.  Bottom line is: Do you want to ride around wondering if your plug/patch is going to last through your next ride, or have the peace of mind a $125 tire will give you?

I've also just found a screw in the rear D407 and I'm having a new tyre fitted this week. The tyre has done 7K and I'm of to Spain next week so replacement is a no-brainer. I would not consider a repair regardless however. The local dealer is doing the work and the retail on the tyre is approx £150 ($288) over this side of the pond. I'm suprised that there are no tyre shops that supply the D407 stateside, I had no problem in finding some over here - www.justdunlop.co.uk quotes the D407 @ £99.95 ($190), but I'm not brave enough to turn up at the dealers with the tyre under my arm and asking them to fit it  ??? I notice Justdunlop quote the D407 for Softails - so they're not perfect!

I have been on the Dunlop site.
Your rear tire size is 170/60R17. You should be able to go to any tire store for that size tire.
You are a little more expense across the pond.

Good luck getting these tires anywhere but the dealer. I had a good friend who runs and indy shop look high and low for me - so I could pay him for them rather than Harley.... but no....OEM only bought them on line at Chicago HD. Had my friend install. If you do find them else where I would like to know where.

The front D407 rides like a pile of dog crap compared to the original E3, which has been discontinued in favor of that POS D407. Will be switching to Metzler radials. They make our rear size, but have to switch to 60 series front instead of the stock 70 series. I don't see that mattering, and there's plenty of room for a little wider tire in the stock fender. ;)

Thanks gang...bikes in the shop today...$148 for the tire ($174.95 less MVP 15% discount) and $127.50 labor..1 1/2@ $85 per.   It is a no brainer just had to go thru my process...was less of a money thing that the inconvienience of the back and forth to Harley, hoping they don't screw anything else up, and making sure they put a good mechanic on it  after all I am paying full labor. I hate taking my bike back on redo's. Any recommendations on a professional plug kit just to have as a temporary fix?  A friend plugged mine.Thanks. Dean

This is what I carry on my '07 SERK. Quality seems to be there but I've yet to try the plugs/plugging tool. Somewhat pricey.

That's the standard FL tire sizes George, and there are many choices. The SERK3/4 uses a wide 17" radial rear and a wider 18" front radial. Not many choices there. But the Metzler radials are my next move! ;)

Careful Howie, It will make a difference in the load rating and the ride characteristics. The 60 series has a lower profile than the 70 series and if you are using the same 170 width tire, you are looking at lesser load and a stiffer ride in all probability.

Careful Howie, It will make a difference in the load rating and the ride characteristics. The 60 series has a lower profile than the 70 series and if you are using the same 170 width tire, you are looking at lesser load and a stiffer ride in all probability.

Casey, I found Metzlers the exact sizes and with adequate load ratings. They just don't show em in the Drag Catalog. But you can find them in the Metzler catalog on their website. They make our rear in a V speed rating. They make 2 fronts for some reason, and I'm waiting to hear from Metzler to determine the difference between them. They both have the same specs on speed and load rating, so I'm confused on the difference between the 2 fronts and why the offer 2. I'll get the info and let ya'll know what's up. ;)

The 130/70R18 will be taller by a smiget. The 130 stands for the edge to edge from the bead to bead measurement.
The 70 stands for the ratio of the sidewalls to the tread.
Use the same formula on both the 120 and the 130 will give you a taller tire on the 130.

Changing wheels would change the Speedo in accuracy. It's fixed in the tranny.
If you want to find out how accurate the Speedo is, get a Garmin Zumo 4xx or 5xx. Then you will see what I'm talking about. :nervous:

Anyone else have an issue with tire wear patterns? Could it be unsafe?

If a belt shifted (especially as much as you're describing here) you'd know it.  It would be at least trying to dance or shimmy in a very unpleasant manner.

Yes my wife's bike is doing the same thing. She is on here 3rd front tire. 2 E3 radials and now a D407. My dealer ship claims they are having trouble across the board with the D407's. Both E3's were warrantied by Harley and the current D407 most likely will be.
We are looking for a replacement that may last. She has a cluck in the front end, maybe that is causing early tire wear. This is the first Harley that I am not able to get 1 front to 2 rear tires.

I have the same pattern on my front tire also. I have been monitoring it closely but other than the strange wear pattern it seems safe. I have not been impressed with this set of tires to date.

Hey thanks for the response folks! I have the clunk in the front that was mentioned too. I also have a horrible pulse when using the front brake; like i'm ride over railroad tracks. I took it to my stealer (not a typo) during oil changes and whatnot and asked them to check it out. THe response was always "that's what abs does", but they didn't realy test drive it until onw day when I went into the back and conned the mechanic into riding it while I was there. He came back with "holly !@#$%, there's something wrong with your brakes!". It's going in next week. It rode extremely smooth when not applying the brakes all the way to 118mph. Now that I've noticed this wear on the tire, I'm getting a strange front end harmonic at certain speeds.

Just had front rotors warrantied for runout on the SERK. Front tire cupped badly. Asked dealer to warranty because tire is cupped not worn. Dealer says tech services says its a wear problem and they will not warranty it. 8700 miles on tires hoping for another 1k on the rear. How the hell can they get away with not covering this tire. Sounds as if it's a known issue. To replace a front before the first rear change is bullsh!t IMO. Any thoughts? I'm not looking forward to having to purchase a front tire evry 8k-9k.

...and as a side note I asked to have the filler cup inside the gas tank replaced due to the paint (powder coated??) flaking off. HD's response is because it's not a visible part and the paint chips will not cause engine problems or fuel filter issues they will not cover that either. Anyone else have this paint flaking problem??

Ask them to put a dial indicator on the rotors. Spec is .008  My front end was also shaking when using front brake and runout was the problem. Good luck.

GH Howie that is BS!!! Harley will most likely cover the tire. I pushed my dealership to send tire to Harley when Val's first tire E3 radials had a weird wear pattern. Everyone at the dealship said the same thing to many miles. Guess what Harley covered 2 tires and the 3rd one a D407 looks is worse than the E3's. I sure it will be covered under warranty. The problem is no one ever reads the maunfactures waranty ploicy. They think it is based on mileage. It is not!:

 "If, during the first fifty percent (50%) of tread wear, the tire becomes unserviceable for a condition covered by this warranty, it will be replaced with a comparable new Dunlop tire. You pay only for retailer services, such as mounting and balancing. If, after the first fifty percent (50%) of tread wear, the tire becomes unserviceable for a condition covered by this warranty, your Dunlop motorcycle tire retailer will replace it with a comparable new Dunlop tire at a cost calculated in the following manner:

After 50% wear:
Either your original buying price substantiated by invoice, or the retailer's current selling price, times (x)

I had both rotors replaced at 12K for a really bad shake. Crazy dealer didn't replace the pads during the replacement so I did that myself. Brakes worked great again but am starting to get the start of that same feeling again, oh so slightly, at 16K. I would talk to the dealer about your front rotors and blame them for the tire wear if possible. I replaced my front at 9K thinking it was just normal wear but now I think it was probably the front brakes wearing it out.

If I remember correctly Dunlop's spec for replacement for 1/32.  I never go that far anyway.  2/32 and I'm ready to change a tire.  Especially if it's more than just around town putts ahead of me.

If you're to 2/32 you've used up most of the tire.  Not saying they're not being assholes.  Just wondering if it's worth the hassle of fighting over.  Might be some benefit to letting them know in very pointed terms that you think they're full of chit, but that it's not worth the hassle this time, and that they're on notice that the next warranty question better not be so damned difficult.

Might not gain a thing.  But leaving them potentially on egg shells for a possible next time is at least some benefit.

Maybe they can't directly Bill.  But the cupping from low tire pressure is a pretty distinguishable pattern.  And it does look a bit different than, say, cupping from weak shocks/suspension.  I have no faith at all that the dealership really recognizes what they're looking at.  It's just an excuse to them.  But there is a look to it that is instructive.

GH,

Sounds like your tire looks just like mine did. I was in Flagstaff AZ. on my way back to Austin, Texas 1,000+ miles across hot roads/highways so I replaced the tire.

Next time tell them the brakes are causing the tire to hop during breaking which causes the cupping.

I would also try to get them to replace the front rotors if you have the same shaking during stopping like I did. You feel it the most anywhere above 50 mph, grabbing a hand full of brakes at 80 you will definitely feel the shake. With the ABS though i never felt out of control, the front end just shakes badly.

What I don't understand is why are our front tires on the FLHRSE3&4 only last 8-10K miles?????? When the 402's can last at least 22K miles and still look good enough to go an additional 2-3K. Why are allot of us reporting a front end clunk? Could this be causing the tire wear? I have always kept the correct tire pressure in wife's tires and they alway wear to what I feel is unsafe because of severe cupping. She rides allot of miles and not as aggressive as GH, but they still wear to fast for my satisfaction.

The bike rides and tracks fine (up and through 100mph) until I grab the brake, then the front end starts hammering. I watched the mechanic drive it around the lot and I thought the tourpak was gonna snap off from the banging! They said the same thing happens to the V-rod tires. It could certianly be the rotors and I will have them checked out. Lucky enough to have a head mechanic at my dealer that actually gives a s--t!

The Flagstaff/Belmount HD dealer put an E3 on when I had them replace my tires at 9K, the original D407 was really worn but now with E3 and the new rotors at 12K, I have 16K on the E3 and it is not showing the much wear yet. I think if you wanted to get your hands on another E3 Flagstaff/Belmount Grand Canyon HD might be able to help you out.

I think the D407 with its big center groove and ABS Brembo with all that stopping power wear the tire out quickly because there is little tire on the road in the middle of the tire. the D407 is probably a little better in the rain but worse in the dry where we all spend mostof our time riding.

When the Flagstaff shop put the E3 on I asked if it was the same size because the tire thread was different but after riding it to Autin TX from AZ and it showed little wear even with the rotors causing the front to shake with fast stops from 80 I became a fan of the E3 versus the D407.

The Flagstaff/Belmount HD dealer put an E3 on when I had them replace my tires at 9K, the original D407 was really worn but now with E3 and the new rotors at 12K, I have 16K on the E3 and it is not showing the much wear yet. I think if you wanted to get your hands on another E3 Flagstaff/Belmount Grand Canyon HD might be able to help you out.

I agree, he probably has only his stock and when it runs out that is it.

Two rears to one front or about 22K for a front is what I would expect. Maybe our riding styles with lots of high speed stops has something to do with the wear. I know I rarely let off early and coast up to a stop.   

I also think the D407 is going to wear real fast because of the center groove. If you look at the center 1 inch of the tire, maybe 25% of it is groove, the E3 has probably 75% tire in the same area.

I'm a little anal on the air pressure thing- we check our pressures before every ride, and make the necessary adjustments.  I got 13K on my first set of OEM tires- F & R, and have right at 7K on the second set.  They'll be due for replacement when we (before) get back from Sturgis.

I have the orginal tires on mine,E3, D407 and have 10,500 on them, rear tire is close to replacing, front looks like it can go another 10,000, Dealer here in town quoted me 152.00 for rear tire, Metz 135.00 not sure which one i'm going with.

Just a stupid question here but is Bridgestone offering anything to fit our bikes? I am no where close to needing tires so therefore I haven't looked into it. I do know that they make some really great tires for sportbikes so I was hoping that they might offer something for our SERK's.

Update: They changed the tire under warranty "this time...". The rotors where way-warped. As I understood it, the max run out they like on the rotors is.8000. The left one was.11000 and the right was .15000! How the H it ever got down the road is beyond me. They ordered two new rotors, due next week. We'll see if that fixes the pulsing in the front end. Now if they can only get the starter to work every time....I'll save that for another tread.

I have 4000 miles on my tire, it looks like crap. It is cupping bad. Will Harley warranty the tires?

If I'm not mistaken they will replace because someone else on this site had a similar problem and they stated Dealer replaced it for them. Worst case sceniro they will prorate the tire.
