Harley Davidson headset with Zumo
« on: March 20, 2008, 08:09:52 PM »

Has anyone out there attempted to wire the HD headset mic so they can talk on the Zumo Bluetooth phone?
It is my thought that if you run a cord from the mic output on the Zumo into the wire going to the PTT switch it would work with the HD mic.
Has anybody tried this and if not, why?

I have the stock HD radio and Zumo 550.

I am using the helmet headset for bluetooth calls. There is a special (low cost) interface that allows you to plug into the 2.5mm jack on the Zumo bike mount (located above the Zumo audio out 3.5mm jack) and allows you to use your helmet headset for both CB and bluetooth.

Simple, clean, inexpensive and crystal clear calls at 70mph!

J&M. It's on their site

You mean this?

http://www.jmcorp.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=CFRG-HDC-ZMO550&PF=6

$269.99 isn't exactly low cost, so I don't think that can be what Merlinii means!

You also need to press a handlebar mounted switch to talk on your cellphone, so it's not exactly the perfect solution.  Cellset's one is better, in my opinion: http://www.cellset.com/multigps.html  but at $225.00, it's not cheap either, so I think he means something else!

Any more info, Merlinii?

I'm using the Zumo 550 with the J & M bluetooth stereo headset and my BlackJack...pretty seamless... I've got a lot to learn about the Zumo though, I admit.

I am using the single Harley/J&M helmet headset for CB and bluetooth calls. There is a special (low cost) interface that allows you to plug into the 2.5mm jack on the Zumo bike mount (located above the Zumo audio out 3.5mm jack) and allows you to use your Harley/J&M helmet headset for both CB and bluetooth.

Simple, clean, invisible, inexpensive and crystal clear calls at 70mph!

I tried many many many bluetooth headsets and above 30mph wind noise made them useless.

Ok, here's the skinny. The Z has a 2.5mm jack above the audio-out for a micrphone.

In my case I ran the wire from the 2.5mm Z mike-out inside the handlebars and under the center tank dash.

Again, in my case all my wires are inside the bars. I also ran the audio-out from the Z in the bars and added an additional AUX to the back of the HD radio. Hence, the extra work (In my case) to put the wires inside the bars.

See Post: http://hdforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2801104

In my case  ran the audio-out and mike-out under the Powerbar (see pics in above thread)
I can remove the Z's bike mount with the audio-out and mike-out in less than 5 seconds in order to lock it up.

Depending on your setup if you have wires under your bars you could follow them.

In the tank dash, where you plug in your helmet headset, there is a wire with a round pin connector at one end (where you plug in your headset) and the other end of this wire is a Deutsch connector that plugs into the wiring harness.

Unscrew the tank dash then unplug the Deutsch connector from the wiring harness and plug in the interface between the connectors.

One end of the interface plugs into the headset dash wire Deutsch connector end and the other end plugs into the wiring harness Deutsch connector. Basically, the interface plugs inline between the two Deutsch connectors.

Headset dash cable/Deutsch end <> Interface <> HD wiring harness. Male to female connection.

The mike jack wire (from the Z) plugs into the interface and now the headset will do cell calls and CB w/the single helmet headset.

The interface is small and hides under the seat.

It sounds complicated, however, if you are running the mike-out wire from the Z under the bars. Pulling the tank dash cover, unplugging the Deutsch connector plugging in the interface, plugging in the Z's mike out wire into the interface and buttoning up the tank dash takes about ten minutes to install.

Install time = less than one beer.

Wanna check it out on the cheap?
Go to Radio Shack get a 2.5mm lapel mike ($5-$10) plug it in the Z and make a call.
Don't wanna have a extra wire from the Z to your helmet with an alligator clip attaching the lapel mike to your helmet mike...(it does look funky) then the interface works great and you're using your helmet mike.

Your cell phone is on your belt and your helmet is on your head.
Simple, clean, invisible, inexpensive and crystal clear calls at 70mph!

The million dollar question. I too read it and came up w/the same conclusion. :confused5: If you're going to speak of the part, say how well it works, and how inexpensive it is let the members here know how they can get it. :nixweiss:

The folks making the interface said it may be a week or two before the parts and procedures will be completed.
I will post again in 1-2 weeks with all the contact info.

Here are some pictures of the setup on my bike.

I ran the audio out and mike out wires inside the handlebars.
I did the "AUX jack in the back of the HD radio" mod.
I ran the mike out wire inside the bars and under the tank dash to the interface.
The two wire connections on the left go into the handlebars.
The two wire connections on the right connect to the Zumo.

I used the Powerlet Powerbar and 2 1/2" Techmount stem w/quick disconnect.
I installed two Radio Shack 1/8" couplers under the Powerlet Powerbar.
This allows for a quick disconnect of the Zumo and Zumo bike mount. (for safe keeping)

It works with both the bikes radio speakers and/or the headset.
What is amusing is turning on the bikes speakers and playing the phone call so all can hear.
Yes, bluetooth and CB both work with the HD/J&M headset.

I have tested the HD radio, CD, CB, Zumo MP3 and Bluetooth to make and receive calls.
The Z's MP3 music stops playing during the phone call and starts again upon hang up.
However, I have not tried it with a passenger.
It should work, I just don't have a passenger or extra headset to try it with.

I can add a link to a WAV file I made of the Headset/Zumo/bluetooth/interface sound quality if you would like.

UPDATED: 6/29/09

Just to let you folks know, I changed out the prior interface that I was using and just
installed the HD BLUETOOTH BOMM from http://home.comcast.net/~jbissonette1/site/

It arrived within two days of ordering.

SIDE NOTE:
Now I know why they call it a BOMM...I personally think it looks like a miniature pipe bomb. (GRIN)

Installation:
It was a simple installation. Just connect the two wires and the 2.5mm plug that are attached to the BOMM.

Installation Time:
It took me less than 15 minutes.
SIDE NOTE: It probably would have taken less if I wasn't sucking on a beer.

My Configuration:
Zumo 550, iPhone, stock HD center console and stock HD headset.

Fitment:
The actual device is fairly small and in my case easily fit with no challenges.
In the picture you can see how small it is in comparison to the 2.5 mm plug.

Results:
It works GREAT!
It's so clear that folks I talk to on the phone don't even know I'm on the bike.
This thing is amazing, inexpensive, easy to install and crystal clear.
No switches, no buzzing, no humming, no interference.
Just plain 'ole good clean sound for the caller and receiver.

Conclusion:
IMHO - It works GREAT!
Folks that I speak to on the phone don't even know I'm on the bike.
This thing is amazing, inexpensive, crystal clear and easy to install.

Indeed we do, Jacques.  I've emailed the guy direct in October - got his email address from Merlinii - and had a reply after a few weeks saying no details yet, and he'd get back to me, but nothing yet. (And Merlinii was last on the board in November).
