Speedometer problem
« on: March 06, 2014, 09:10:58 PM »

Picked my 09 FLTRSE3 up today at an independent shop that installed new handlebars.  Everything works except speedometer.  Odometer and backlights on speedometer work, just doesn't register speed.  I pulled speedo/tach naicelle, and made sure plug was fully in. (lots of cussing, very tight in there).  Any ideas before I pull off front fairing (which I can never get back on)?  Thanks

Encountered this problem many times in the car business. If the odometer is indeed registering mileage as you ride, and the speedo is reading zero, the speedometer is broke. It's that simple. Odometer registering means the speed sensor is sending a signal and the speedometer is receiving it. Change the speedo!!!

I hate to hear that.  It was working before I dropped off bike, figured it had to be something to do with wiring being taking apart to run through new bars.  How much does a speedo cost?  Any other possibilities?

Before you buy a new speedo, have the existing one checked with a speedometer tester.  Harley shops should have one.  The fact that it worked before they pulled everything apart and it doesn't work immediately after they put it back together leads me to think there just might be a cause and effect relationship.  It's not that often that components fail totally on their own under those circumstances (but of course anything is possible).  I noticed you mentioned how tight it is to get to the electrical connector.  It will be worth the effort to make sure none of the terminals in the connectors were damaged or pushed out when the connection was made.

The speedometer part number is 67516-09 (mph domestic version), and MSRP is $208.  They can be found at the discount Harley dealers for around $170.

And if you do have the speedo replaced I believe you have to have the current mileage set in the new speedo.  I am not sure an indy shop would have the necessary tools.
