Best windshield for 2013 Ultra CVO?
« on: April 19, 2013, 01:27:05 PM »

Looking to replace the OEM windshield that came with the CVO.  It's a good windshield, but my line of vision is such that I need to sit up very straight to see over it, or bend down to see through it.  In a comfortable riding position, my line of sight is right at the top of the windshield (5'10") which I don't like.  Looking for perhaps a 6", 7" or 8" recurve windshield and was hoping to get some input from the forum.  What do you like on your Ultra?

I had a Cee Baileys on my SERG, and it was very good.  Bought it before Cee Baileys offered the recurve so that is on my short list.  Along with Windvest & Freedom Shield.  Preferences???

I've got a Freedom Shields recurve on mine and I'm very happy with it.

JoeVibe,
What size did you go with?  Thanks

IMO, it's not a good idea to go with what "others" buy, even if they are your same height.  Everybody is built differently, sits differently, etc.  The best thing to do is sit on your bike like you would normally, on a flat road, driveway, etc.  Put an object about 50' out in front of the bike.  Look at the object and put a piece of masking tape or similar on the stock shield to see the point at which you can see the object over the tape mark.  Then measure how many inches from the top of the fairing to the tape...order that size.  If you get a recurve, it's effectively about 2" higher, so you should be good to go.  Freedom, Clearview, Windvest...just depends on whether they offer the right height, look, and tint/no tint for what you think.

One person who's 5'10" might have 34" legs and another might have 30", so saying how tall you are and comparing it to others the same height is pretty much meaningless.  Measure twice, buy once.

I went with an 11". I'm 5"11 but I've got short legs (29" inseam) so I sit pretty high in the saddle. It never gets into my line of site and the air goes over my head as advertized. The OEM shield was way too short for me.

Freedom shields has some tips on measuring for the right height on their website. I took a lot of time measuring every way I could before I ordered mine.

Midnight Rider posted his comments as I was writing this. I agree with everything he said. Measure, measure, measure.

The cool thing about Freedom (others may do it too), is when you get the shield you can mount it on the bike without removing the protective film and test ride it. If it's too tall or short you can exchange it.

Thanks guys.  I've purchased several windshields for my previous CVO's so know the importance of finding the right height for me vs others.  However, I really enjoy reading about what others like/dislike, anything new in the market, etc.  It's all about sharing info.

I got a 9 inch Elite Series Long Ride Shield with some custom etching. My wife designed the etching.

I put an 8 inch smoked Windvest on my ride. I look above it and the wind goes over my head. I had this on a previous Ultra Limited.  Looks great IMO and works for me.  8)

I have had nothing but positive things to say about Clearview their windshields are excellent quality and customer service is fantastic. You may want to check out older threads about them, they used to offer a discount to site members. They also have the shield return policy where if you leave the film on it you can test ride your bike/shield combo to see if it works for you, if not good just return.

Freedom Shields!! Probably the 7" for you @ 5' 10", but their instructions are excellent, just measure accordingly. Best quality and product out there. Mention to John you are a member here, he gives a discount.

Ditto the Freedom Shields 7", I am the 5'10" with a 32" inseam and it is perfect for me. I picked up my new 2013 SEUC yesterday and drove it home with the stock windscreen on it, about made me cross-eyed because the top of the windscreen was right in my line of sight. Had the 7" freedom on my last bike so went right back to it for this one. Looks great and I feel like it cut down on the turbulence a bit, maybe me justifying the purchase to myself, but I am pleased with both the performance and the looks.

I have the Clearview on one bike and a Freedom on another.
The next shield I buy will be a Freedom.
My Clearview is a good shield but after owning a Freedom my next shield purchase will be a Freedom.
Also a big plus for those considering the Freedom is that John that owns the company is an active member here.
Freedom also supported this site by making a shield donation to the site owners bike.
Both Freedom and Clearview were contacted about being a part of that effort.
Freedom stepped up and we never heard or got a response from Clearview.
People can do as they please but I chose to support a company that makes a great product and supports this site.

Agree 100% with you.  The various windshields I'm considering are all very good and any one would be fine.  However, picking a great product that supports this site is a small way to say thank you and show some loyalty to the forum.  That's it...I'm going Freedom.  Thanks for all the responses.

I put the 8" FREEDOM shield on my '11 CUSE6 and it look and works fantastic. I'm on the short side of 5'10" with a stubby 30" inseam, but just go to their website and follow the direction to determine the best height for you.  JOHN is great to deal with and he believes in customer service  :2vrolijk_21:

On my previous bike I sat on the bike and had my wife mark the windshield with a marker at the perfect height for me.  Then took the windhield to a local auto glass place and had him cut it and polish the edges....cost about $30 and was custom to my eyes and height...

I have the 10' Freedom Shield (smoked) on my '11 CVO Ultra and love it. I'm a shade under 6' and 32 inseam. Tried the  7" and the wind  hit my forehead.
