A while back I wrote a letter to HD asking for correct production numbers, by color, for the FXR2, FXR3 and FXR4. Though the advertising literature of the day and commonly accepted number today says 900 of each, I had always wondered aboout the color scheme breakdown since I seem to have seen more of one color than the other in each of the three bikes. Anyway, this should be the final word on just how many of each were built. Not many Blue FXR3's out there.
-
interesting the drop off on the fxr3s based on that letter it would also suggest that none left the US

Awesome research Red, great job. Thank you!

Nice job, Red! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Guess that explains why I've never seen a blue FXR3 in person. :-/

Do you know how many years has to go by before they'll provide this information?
If you don't mind, please PM me or post the address you sent your inquiry to. I'd like to find out this same information for the SEEGs. Thanks!

That's a great idea Brian. We should get that for all the CVO's and record it here for each model. Who's the club Historian? Did someone say Roger? ::) Hoist! 8-)

thanks so much for the time spent in getting facts on production of fxr's. i've always felt low numbers on second color offered vs. first first out. thanks again. dave

I've only seen one, myself--it was for sale on consignment back in the same Indy shop in NC where I had earlier bought my FXR2. That bike only had about 60-something miles on it (not sure exactly but I remember it was freakishly darn near new). Been kept in somebody's basement in a "bubble" unridden for years. Later, the owner of the shop told me that it had barely been advertised when a guy in Alabama bought it sight unseen and paid to have it shipped down there. That was about 3 years ago.

I just found 2 blue fxr3's for sale on h-d trader, also fxr4 tangerine in arizona w/ 100 miles on her. some of these out there, must dig deep to find em. still my favorite ride, use it as daily comute. hdfxr3

I'm impressed. No, really. I thought I was the only one who remembered VIN's of their favorite vehicles of years ago. I still remember the VIN's for my 1974 Triumph Trident and my 1966 Austin Healey. I even remember the engine block number for the AH. I surf ebay and a couple of other brand-specific enthusiast forums now and then looking for either but no luck so far. Now that I've got "130" in my head for your FXR2 I'll keep an eye out for it, too.

I see that your location is South Florida...exactly where?

I wonder how many (somewhat) original fxr2/3/4's are still around, or how many are in the U.S. or in other countries? Would be interesting to know how much rarer these bikes have become over the years.
-
Given the amount of "customized" ones I've seen around. I'd bet not that many OEMs exist. I know I changed all the lights out on mine, plus matched handgrips with footpegs. You know...detail schtuff. I thought the OEM turn signals and headlights were garbage. Fugly. Add little things like lay-down plate holders and stuff, and the numbers drop.
But, I've seen some that were "custom painted", and had "custom seats, and handlebars" added.
And...sad as it is to say. I bet some have even been wrecked, or parted out after being crashed/stolen.
Which makes those Blue FXR3s all the much more desireable....

Yep. I've seen some that, IMO, were further customized beyond recognition of their original identity. To each their own, I suppose, but I think those can for all intents and purposes be removed from the headcount of CVO FXR's still in existence, beyond simply ID by VIN that is.
But I also haven't seen one that was absolutely showroom stock, either, and that doesn't bother me at all. I'm guilty of that, myself, but mine remains easily identifiable as what it started out as.
And I agree that inevitably some have been wrecked or stolen and broken up for parts.
[edit] Thinkiing about parts--it wasn't long after I got mine that the Badlander seat proved to be good looking but bad feeling, after more than 50 miles, anyway. So after agonizing over aftermarket seats I decided what I really wanted as a seat off of an FXR3 or 4, but could I still find one? Well, a couple of each were available at dealers as NOS parts but were expensive so I started watching ebay. It wasn't long before the seat and sissy bar (and a few other things, controls, handlebars, signals, etc.) from a FXR3 showed up in pristine condition. I bought the seat and sissy bar. The guy told me via e-mail that he had removed them from his FXR3 just after he got it in favor of more "custom" parts. Kinda made me wonder at the time but like I said, I've personally seen CVO FXR's further custominzed beyond CVO recognition.

I have a Yellow FXR4, with 3100 miles on it that is stock except for a high flow, and mufflers. Still rides on the original tires. I am thinking about selling it. I bought it from the original owner. Not sure what I am going to do. If anyone has any interest or knows anyone that might be interested, let me know. I don't want to post it under selling until I am sure that I want to sell it.

Hi Everyone,
I'm the proud owner of a Blue 1999 FXR3. I was doing research on how many were made because evrytime I turn around there is a different opinion. I was glad to see the letter that there is only 64 made. I'm still looking for the first thread were you guys are tracking the VIN's. Hopefully I find you if not please find me. Teresa

Hi Everyone,
I'm the proud owner of a Blue 1999 FXR3.
Welcome to the forum, Teresa. I grew up in Georgia--familiar with Royston (Ty Cobb story plus some of my own history). Please make yourself at home and feel free to contribute or ask questions. Some avid FXR owners here.

Stole this photo from 2timen. Thought it belonged on this thread. Don't think I have ever seen a photo of all 6 FXR CVO's before. Be worth a trip to New Mexico just to see them.

Hello fellow fxr3 blue flame owners. i just got off the phone with lady at customer service with Harley Davidson. She was the lady who wrote the letter published here from 2007. Current info with harley says that 300 total blue flame bikes were produced in 1999, not the 64 as shown previously. She sent me email to confirm the figures. 270 domestic, 30 to Calif. Where are all of these? This forum has located 57 of 64. Where are the other units?
