Title: Shiloh Motor Hotel in East Tennessee
Post by: 110tHunDer on April 14, 2008, 10:27:32 PM

Spent some much needed time with friends and time in the wind last weekend at www.shilohmotorhotel.com.  This is a super-rustic 6 unit road house run by a fella named Joe and his wife and is located just east of Knoxville, TN in a town called Seymour.  We had a great time riding around GA, NC and TN last Thursday - Saturday.  From the site we had 07hd110 (Tommy) and his wife Judy, Tbone and MsTbone (Bob & Ilene), JR (John) and me.  Also with us was JR's buddy Mike and Tommy's cousin Tim and his friend Wayne.

JR's got some great shots that put these to shame, but here are a few of the ones I snapped during the trip.

A few of the bikes a stop on Thursday morning on the way to meet Bob & Ilene in Helen, GA . . .

It rode just fine in the trailer. :nixweiss: ;D  BUT, we did put about 700 miles on during the 3 days there and the bike did great!  I missed the power of the 103 in the SEEG, but really loved the riding position of the SERG and the extra 1" suspension height was really noticable in the twisties.  I'm looking at the 3 bikes this way for right now: SEEG - two-up cruising and long-distance hauler (extra power, king TP, killer tunes); SERG - one-up, cooler weather, mid-range riding (more "stretched-out" riding position than the SEEG, great wind protection, chopped-pak holds less and/or can be removed); FXR3 - 'round town, hot weather cruiser with good old-fashioned rumpety-rump carbureted attitude and sound. :)

We met Bob and Ilene for lunch at Han’s in Helen GA on Thursday.  From there we had planned on riding back roads to Telico Plains TN, Cherohala Skyway and Deals Gap.

Tommy, I've met you when you were riding the Orange and Black SEEG, and now you have the Black and Orange SEUC, still seems to suit you and Judy.  I've met Harry(UnBalanced), Bill (WFP), John (rainman), Roy (REO), Chip (SilverBlack), Bob & Ilene (Tbone and MsTbone), and I am sure others and associate them through this site to a particular bike and know they have moved on to new/different.  But I am having a hard time getting over seeing Brian (103tHunDer) riding that SERG.  It is gorgeous, my favorite of the lot, but I just seem to want to see him on the BnB SEEG.  Got pics of him riding his RG?

Sure glad you folks got together and had a good time.

All of it was open.  In fact they now have the Cooper Road open that goes from the back of Cades Cove to Hwy 129 (Deals Gap).

I think it is Parsons Branch that goes directly to 129 from Cades Cove, no?

Cooper Rd I think actually runs to the outside of the "Great Smoky Mountains Park" to, if I recall Happy Valley Rd, which then dumps out onto 129 just east of the Foothills.

Either way, now that it is open, it is a must  :2vrolijk_21:

Is it still 1 way 'Cades to 129'?

Is it still gravel? Not that it would stop me  ;D I've been on a gravel road or two down there.

I doubt most people even see the Parsons Branch Rd entrance on 129.

As a side note, for those wishing to do the Cades Cove loop, it is closed on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, from May to September, open only for bicycles.

The picture below is the Parsons Branch exit onto 129 (Tenn side). Right in the middle of one of the better hairpins.

129 is highlight in yellow, PB in white. The white highlight is actually off a bit, you can see through the trees that the exit is right in the middle of the turn.

Cooper Road intersects with Abrams Road which intersects with Happy Valley Road.  Happy Valley ends on 129 near the intersection of 129 and Foothills Parkway.  Happy Valley is paved.  Don't know about Cooper and Abrams.

I'm not sure which road is open (Cooper or Parsons).   :nixweiss:

The park ranger just told us that the road from Cades Cove to 129 was open (he didn't say which one).  We didn't travel either road since thunder storms and hail were in the forecast for that afternoon.  Didn't want to get too far from Shiloh.

Parson Branch is  open out of the cove. There is another oneway road, Rich Mountain road ,thats open. Its also gravel both are good roads if ya dont mind rock.

Cooper Road has been closed for years but is great for hiking as well as Goldmine road. But for me the hiking days are over.

Candy do you want one of me too  :confused5:      ;D

Hey Jock! :drink: It was beautiful every day. Fridays rain didn't come until we were in and parked for the evening. That brought the bluest sky for Saturdays ride on the Devils Triangle. Sundays ride home was the worst day. Ran into sleet and rain on and off all the way home. As for the cleanest bikes, look at the company I was in. Brians SERG is awesome looking and never saw any bug guts on it...ever! :huepfenlol2: Just trying to keep up with the rest of em! ;) Bless Ya Buddy! :2vrolijk_21:

Tried to call Joe at Shiloh to set up another trip this May and his phone number is no longer in service.  Checked his web site ( http://www.shilohmotorhotel.com/ ) and it's down too.  I checked on Joe in March of last year and was told by one of his friends that Joe wasn't doing well and they were helping him get the hotel ready to open for the season.

Has anyone heard any news about Joe or Shiloh?

While doing a search for Shiloh Motor Hotel on the web a link to this thread came up!  It was great looking through the four year old post and pics!

Man that was a great weekend! :2vrolijk_21: Hope and pray Joe is OK. I remember when we were there his wife was diagnosed with cancer. I called him about 6 months later and he said she was doing fine! Man I hope all is well with him and his family. Would love to make another trip with some good friends and fellowship!!! :drink: :2vrolijk_21:
