Might be a good check every year or so
« on: November 01, 2010, 07:40:00 PM »

Started to have an issue with charging on the bike just before the end of the year, thought I'd take the time to upgrade to 45 amp system.  I found a big expensive surprise.    Check it out here:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=34375.0

spacer $19, nut $9.75, compensator $161, shaft extension $187, cam $98 and gear $135.  I have to replace the nylon chain tensioner since it was installed backwards, but that is $4.95.

Basically everything that is mounted on the crank shaft.  The nut wore into the compensator, the shaft ext wore into the rotor, the rotor wore the spacer, the compensator springs also look compressed and loose.  The cam ramps are wore really funny from being loose it appears.

Now the funny thing is there was no trace of a spacer (0.20) which the manual calls for between the rotor and the shaft extention, it had the 38 amp rotor.  hmmmm but considering the nylon tensioner being on backwards.........

That got expensive real fast Brad.  Royally sucks.  You guessing it got built without the shim so the stack was short its entire life?  Only other option would be a loose comp nut that was banging away for a very long time.

Hey Brad, I just checked out in the parts drawer.  If you haven't bought parts yet I've got a couple of the outer sliding cams.  The one right under the comp.  Good parts, no problems.  If you want it PM your mailing address and I'll get in the mail.  No charge.  Just a good spare that needs an engine to live in.
