PRIMARY OIL CHANGE
« on: October 01, 2014, 10:00:33 AM »

Changed all 3 holes today at 10,000 miles. I could not believe how dirty and black the primary oil was. I don't know why the manual calls for a 10,000 mile interval for the primary. I'll do the next change at 5,000 and check the condition. Cheap insurance for sure. It sure felt weird not having to do any clutch adjustment after so many years of having a cable clutch.

Tranny was a nice golden yellow, I changed over to Red Line Shockproof. Tranny sounded less whinney.

Amsoil for the crank, been using it for years and just feel comfortable with it. Old oil looked like what I expected.

I started using Red Line about 20,000 miles ago in all 3 holes, but change everything 4 to 5,000 miles, You are right tranny alot less whinny and seems to shift smoother.

your clutch lives in the primary and the plates are sacrificial parts meaning they shed themselves to the primary oil accounting for the dark look of the oil. Harley says 10000 mile interval for the primary oil but I change all three hole at 5000. what's another two quarts of oil?

Three days ago I changed all 3 holes at 40K miles. I go by the manual, 5K miles for engine oil using 20/50 Mobil One Synthetic for V-Twins. 10K miles for Primary using 20/50 Walmart Dino oil, (didn't want it to go to waste). 20K miles transmission using Red Line Shock.

The above works for me.
