Title: sporty screamin eagle ignition on a evo motor
Post by: HEADPAN62 on November 20, 2010, 10:35:52 AM
If I am correct, it is ok to use a sporty ignition on an evo? for the only difference is the rpm limit..ita a sporty screamin eagle ignition on a evo motor

The sporty ignition will work on the the EVO, but unless you have done some work to the engine,(cam, carburation and head work)the engine will not be able to take advantage of the extra RPM.

A stock EVO will tend to run out of power around 5200 RPM, so the extra 800 RPM is meaningless.

The advance curves are fixed on both the stock and sporty ignitions, so if you want to take advantage of higher compression in a build, you need to go to the aftermarket for ignition.

Panhead.....I ran a 1200 Sportster ignition module for many years.....most are obsolete now.  There were a few that had a 8000 rpm limit, 2000 rpm higher than what your Evo can handle. The performance modules have a faster, more aggresive ignition curve, and work fairly well with a tweaked Evo in a light bike.  The stock modules have a rev limiter at 5200 rpm.
The Sportster module was replaced last year with a Screamin' Eagle unit #32596-96, 6000 rpm limit.  Am quite happy with this particular module, as it is similar to the Sportster module, which just quit.  SE #32596-96 is also not produced anymore.

If you are running a mild performance cam, pipes and a well tuned carb in a smaller bike, you will probably like addition of a performance module.

You may want to check the sensor wire connector.  :nixweiss:
IIRC,the Sporty doesn't have a bank angle sensor like the later Evo's do.
Your stock Evo WILL handle 6200 rpm with NO problem.  ;)

Hi John......did check everything on the Sportster module...no go. It was installed in '93, and I don't recall the part # anymore.  I've never had a module that would let me spin my Evo to 6200 rpm. Are you running a programable unit?  Thanks for the info, Greg

I ended up getting the Crane Hi4-E..
8000 rpm is a bit much (sportster ignition)
I put screamin eagle heads on her, 10 over Keith Black pistons and a EV-27 cam
Put new tappetts in her as well since I was there.
so the stock ignition was not gonna cut it
I already had a single fire coil , and got 30% off the Hi4-E  module........

thanx for everyones response to my post
