Fairing removal, IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: July 21, 2008, 03:51:14 PM »

I cant get the headlight plug off. I can only get my fingers on the plug sides, I cant get enough grip on it to squeeze and pull it off. I need some help with this, what am i doing wrong here? its really hard to get inside behind the headlight and then just cant seem to exert enough pressure to squeeze and pull. HELP!!!

Take the headlight trim ring off (1 screw on the bottom) then just remove the whole headlight assembly, 4 more screws.

I found this to be much easier then wrestling with the 3 wire harness' on my HID light. And because the HID kit is bigger I ended up breaking off one of the small alignment ears while trying to wrestle the fairing back on.

In the end it is much easier to just remove the headlight assembly.

I think I am missing something...  You remove the chrome bezel, then the screws that hold the headlight in and you can hold the headlight in one hand and pull the plug with the other, can't you? Sometimes it is hard, but I have always been able to wiggle up and down a bit and it comes apart. What am I missing? I'd be happy to help if I could imagine a better picture.  :2vrolijk_21:

I'm not trying to bust chops, but did you take out the 2 lower fairing screws by the steering neck?  They are hard to see if you don't know to look.

Jamey - I think he is trying to take the fairing off without removing the headlight. That is the way I did it until I tried the assembly removal trick.

yes, all screws are out, the fairing tilts forward 3-4 inches and I can get my hand almost on the connection. All screws are out 3 on top 2 on sides and 2 on bottom under tripkle tree.
I didnt know you could remove the headlight from the front DOH!! I've never pulled a fairing, and the ones I've seen off have had the headlight in them. thanks

Whew!

I started thinking that since the VA rated me as disabled, I might be worse than originally noted!  :nervous:

Uh, that's how I do it.  Is everyone else removing the whole headlight assembly from outer fairing? :nervous: :nixweiss:

I pulled the outer fairing off mine last week.  I left the headlight in, but it was tough getting my hand in to remove the headlight plug.  My headlight plugs turn about a quarter turn and come out - probably much easier than having to deal with one of those plugs that you have to squeeze the releases to pull out.

CVO, one small trick that is surprisingly helpful is to pull a sock over each spotlight.  Painted surface on cotton slide easier than painted surface against shiny metal.  And you worry about it less.

You can slide the fairing up one side first.  So that it's trapped behind only one spotlight and allow yourself much more room to get at the headlight plug.  Have a screwdriver in your right rear pocket handy in case the socket seems difficult to get off and you need a little leverage.

Otherwise yes you can remove the headlight bucket right out of the nose of the fairing.  After getting the trim ring off just be sure and take out only the screws that go in the fairing body itself.  Don't loosen the screws that have large springs behind them.  Those springs are part of the headlight adjustment.  If you turn those your headlight might be chasing squirrels on the side of the road after reassembly.

I too have found it hard at times to get the front of the fairing of and what I have found is if you have tension on the fairing it's putting pressure on that clip that plugs into the headlight. If you can get a smaller arm in there and have someone hold the fairing up relieving the tension you can get that clip unplugged. You have to squeeze it and pull at the same time to get the prongs to release.
