Rotator cuff surgery
« on: October 22, 2014, 11:13:23 PM »

Hello everyone, I just had right shoulder rotator cuff surgery with decompression done on Sept. 17, so it's been just a little over a month ago, and from how I feel my shoulder so far I think I won't be able to ride for a while. Has anyone on here had any similar or type of surgery on their shoulder, and if so how long before you were able to ride again??

Never had rotator cuff surgery, but I did separate my shoulder in a significant way in August, 2004.  It was about 7 months before I could confidently ride again.  I rode after about 5 months, but wouldn't didn't venture to far away for about 7 months.  I've learned a shoulder injury is a big thing.  Mine bothers me to this day, I've come to learn what not to do with it.  I suspect it will be bothersome to the end...

I had my left shoulder October 2013.  Supposed to be a quick in and out scope job.  Woke up with a 5 inch scar, collar bone ground down a 1/4", rotator cuff sew up, my bicep tendon re-attached with some screws and other crap done.  I found ice was the best medicine money could buy.  Went deer hunting (handgun - one handed) that Nov.  But I'm a terrible patient.  I walked on a partially torn Achilles tendon for 9 month thinking it was a sprain.  So if your dense like me you'll be riding next season.

Ice it to keep the swelling down.  I still ice mine after a work out.

Had mine done in Sept. of 2012. 2 tendons reattached, collar bone shaved, bone spurs ground off, 3 carbon fiber threads holding my arm to my shoulder. I rode my bike one time 4 months later but I probably should not have done it.
Recovery is slow. A good physical therapist is a must. I told them to work it as much as possible and I would just be on the table screaming in pain. LOL. I told them I wanted it back 100% and they did it but it took about 6 months for full recovery.
Also the recovery was not as painful as I was expecting and that was good. You must have patience and keep in your mind that it will heal and will be normal again. Good luck with your recovery.

I have tendinitis in my right shoulder. Went to a specialist thinking it was a torn rotator cuff. X-rays said no.

I can tell you that just with the tendinitis it can be tough somedays.

Good Luck!

Really depends on how severe it is. I felt like I was able to ride within a couple of months. But, long rides were out of the question for at least 4 months. the main thing to be aware of, is when you feel like riding, just remember, that if the bike is going to fall over. Don't try to catch it.............

Sounds like something MoCo would say... "it's normal"..

BS on the 90% rate. Had mine done due to a work accident 10 years ago. Missed a whole winter of work dammit (I work outside ::) ) . A good Vet and like mentioned before, a great therapist and you'll be good to go when they say you are. Mine was a little more on the severe side and I was off work for 6 months.

I'm in physical therapy now..two small tears, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, bone spurs and frozen shoulder.  It sounds worse then it is, usually if you have one you have all. Going Monday to see what they want to do with it...hoping no surgery.

Looks like we are all getting older and are now out of any warranty.

I just had two total knee replacements done--one 3/25 and the other 4/15. I have been riding my new 2015 CVO SESG since the first of the month with no issues.

I procrastinated for 15 years before giving in when the meniscus in both knees was totally gone and I couldn't walk more than short distances.

As many have said ice, therapy and exercise are your best friends. I'd do it again but sooner.

Quality of life is paramount.
