FXDSE help needed 1/8 mile traction.
« on: March 20, 2012, 07:39:47 AM »

Hi people.

Looking for advice on a tyre/suspension setup for 1/8 mile (1/4 mile). Our local indy shop runs a fun day 1/8 mile on an unprepped track (our prepped track only runs a few times a year and is really busy). Had about 10 runs last Saturday and was suffering traction issues. Tried everything to get a decent launch and every time the bike overpowered the rear tyre except for "walking" the bike off the line.

The result was a best of 2.052 60ft, 91 mph, 7.8 1/8 mile. So slow of the mark and running good mph at the end of the track.

So can anyone shed some light on how to get the 60ft time down to something reasonable like 1.7 - 1.8. Sticky rear tire? 200 tire? Shocks?

One rider's words of wisdom to me were rubber mount motor = no good at the track - thanks old mate.

My FXD did 11.07/123mph in the 1/4.  Supercharged 95" on 404 Dunlop. First run with 35lbs air, 11.77 aat 117, no real hookup until 300'. Dropped pressure to 25, launched at 3500 instead of 4000, still spun but hooked at 150'. The 404 is NOT a good drag tire, way too hard, but showed definite improvment with less air.  Rubber mounts have nothing I can see to do with getting traction down to the surface.
Easiest way is to lower rear tire pressure to 25lbs. Try softening rear suspension to transfer more load to the tire.
Of course the stickiest tire will really help, 591 Dunlop or Avon Venom. Launching at too high Rpm can cause tire to break loose, I usually launch at 3-3500rpm, 4000 broke her loose every time.

Try some fold up wheelie bars. Use them for a sissy bar when not racing. :nixweiss:
