Anyone need a rear tire yet ?
« on: January 27, 2013, 06:52:00 PM »

I'm getting close on my sesg3.  13k miles.  The middle has definitely seen better days.  I guess I'll be ordering up one soon.  What's everyone else who needed one got on their original ?  Thanks.  Stuart

You only really have one choice, OEM unless you want a radial.

I'm only getting right around 9,000 to 10,500 miles on the rear before I need a new one depending on how I've been riding.  Looking @ putting on #4 @ 33,000 mile.  I'll be looking for a good replacement combo when I need a new front & rear.

Anyone running something they recommend?

Unfortunately for the rear the only tire that is properly load rated is the stock d407 tire form HD. I talked to a Dunlop rep at a dealer showcase Friday night and was told they hope to have the American elite in the 180/55-18 by the end of the year......Metzler, Pirelli, and Michelin did not have an answer for when or if they'd have it available.

I think I have no other choice at this time but to go to the dealer?  I probably have another thousand miles before I have to change it. These tires last a whole lot longer than the tires that came on my 04.  5k they were toast.   :'(

I managed to squeeze 18K out of the rear before I had to replace it. Granted, I'm only 180#, and held back on constant burn outs.

I got 40 000 KM on my rear. A few burn outs  ;D.

It stood up straight on it's own when they took it off. Front was OK but I changed them both before I went to Sturgis. I wish I could have waited. My buddy with a CVO convertible changed his tires in Rapid City H.D. and he paid 50% LESS than I did. Ish.

No more burn outs unless I am changing my tires in the U.S.

Bad news boys..........got this today from Dunlop

We appreciate your contact and interest in Dunlop Motorcycle Tires.
Unfortunately, our current production plan for year 2013 / 2014 does not include the American Elite 180/55B18 size.
Sorry, we are unable to help further.

Meh, it is what it is.  I actually really like these tires.  The dual compound seems to where really well.

I don't like that the dealership is the only place to get the tires, but often in the winter months, they sell them at a decent discount.  At least, my local dealership does.

Also, I ordered my last set from LSHD.  Changing them myself helps keep cost down.

The original tire on the '09 started cupping at <6k, replaced by my dealer, replacement started cupping with about 8k on it...

Pressure always set on 40 all weights in place

Anybody else have a problem with cupping???

The front was recalled when the bike had about 5k on it, the front has about 13k on it now and is almost worn out !!
At least the front is wearing evenly

I'm on my third rear tire at the moment.  Second was replaced a little early as I had a 4500 mile ride planned and wanted to be safe for it.

No cupping at all on any of the tires.  Set to 40PSI, and using Dyna Beads to balance.

Also, on my second front tire.  I bumped up to a 19" Agitator from the stock 18" on my '10 FLHXSE.

So far, with the 19" wheel/tire, I've got over 20K on the front tire, and it still have quite a bit of tread left.

The dealer replaced your tire with 6,000 miles on it because it was cupped? WOW!! What dealer is this? I think I want to start going there for my warranty work!

I have 13,000 on the rear tire of my 13 CVO ultra and it has been cupped for about half of those miles. My brother in law runs the Dunlop elite 3 on his Goldwing and he has the same problem, cupping after about 7,000 miles.

I replaced the rear at 19,500 miles and am getting close to putting a new front tire on at 27,000 miles (The gauge is still in the green, just barely!) I keep 40lb in the front and 36 in the rear, ride solo, and no burnouts! My service guy brags to others about how well my tires wear. :carrot:

None of The tires on my other 2 CVOs (Or any of my other vehicles for that matter)have ever cupped or had any other issues.
When did cupping or abnormal wear patterns become acceptable on high-end vehicles (Or any other vehicles for that matter)???

Only 11K on the front sucks, Judy! I remember we talked about this in another thread.

I replaced my rear tire at about 11K miles. I was kind of disappointed, but I don't ride like a little old man on the way to church!

The original front is still going strong with plenty of tread at 17.5K miles.

I run 40 PSI in both tires.

Ken, I'm inclined to think I had a bad tire because after changing both tires my MC feels and steers better than it ever did with the original.  Brian (110tHunDer) accused me of riding to fast in reverse!   :'( :D. We will see how many miles I get on this new set.

I am down to 4/32 or so, but my mechanic told me it would last til my 15k tuneup. I am completely covered on tire and tune ups, so, no worries on cost, at least. I am at 14,300 on Scarlett.

I've been amazed at the OEM tires. I'm over 19k miles and the tread still looks to have some life in it. My last bike (Yamaha Road Star) never got much over 10k if I recall. I have nothing but praise for the these things!

First rear I changed at 19 and some change and still had some tread left. I waited a couple months and then did the front, it also had some thread left so a little more than 20 k on that.Probly that set was 2 to 1, one up vrs 2 up riding. So we will see on second set as just now at 10 k and looks like plenty of wear left. And this is the OEM Dunlops.

I will replace mine at 15,000 probably would go further but no need to risk it. I ride it hard off the line ad have done 4 burnouts and still got 15,000 out of it. I am going back with the same tire.
