Title: Illuminated CVO Logo
Post by: Sierramadre on July 26, 2011, 07:27:33 PM

I checked out the illuminated CVO logo on the tank panel of the new SESG3. Very cool and it looks like it's an insert that would fit directly into the 2011 panel. Think the genius's at Harley will allow the 2011 owners to upgrade or will we have to go the eBay/'it must have fallen off a truck' route.

I am hoping it will fit on the SESG2.  Maybe the LEDs can be changed, would love to put some green ones on my Krypto!!!!!!

They will probably say that you need to upgrade to the 2012 SESG3...

You don't understand, the illuminated logo costs $36K. The bike comes attached to it.

The black insert is just a piece of plexiglass, painted on the backside, thats glued or adhered to the console. Its on there pretty good too! I'm guessing that You would have to buy the entire console piece and whatever kind of light setup they have behind it all together.  I'm hopeing that i can catch one at the dealer before they PDI it and flip one over to check it out.

Was going to look into illuminating tank logo like Softail Convertable.
Adding Chrome mirrors.
Changing chrome fairing trim to the same as Ultra Classic.

No need to now, 2012 SG has it all including new chrome fairing trim.

2. Front guard side on.
3. Front guard looking from top front

Can you get a part number out of him? As soon as we can get that, it will be easy to order or find out if it's restricted.

Bad news boys
The insert #14100116  $93.33 is restricted!  My parts guy said HD imposes a $5,000 fine to the dealer if they are caught selling a restricted part to a non serial number owner.  Thats what he said, a line of bull?  The counsol and insert each have part numbers its not an assy. Im thinking of removing the insert and shaving/grinding under the medalian then adding leds, it would be great if someone had a picture of the underside of a 2012.

So I pulled the tank console from my '11 just now. The console has the hole for the light already..it even has the spot for the screw to secure it! The consoles are the same part numbers, it's just the insert that they changed. I put a light behind mine and it does not really shine through....maybe a litte, but probably not as well as the new insert. The light assembly isn't even vin protected. I played dumb and ordered the insert from an online dealer....let's see if they sell it to me. Getting the light later on should be easy.

I'm kinda hoping that maybe the ordering was automated and the part will just get added to the list and ordered.....then it will come in, match up to my order and they send it to me....of course all the planets will have to be in alignment for this to happen but it was worth a shot.

Or you can pick up a VIN number from a show floor model or, eventually, one for sale on ebay or chopper exchange and order from a dealer that way. This stuff is all doable.

In the past on some items, they would make you turn in the part that you were replacing or else you didn't get the new 'protected' part.  Some dealers (like Jenni) didn't require that..... :-X  spyder

Sadly it is restricted

If these are the parts needed that are marked on the list, I have just done an Internet order here in the UK & total cost of parts are £206.00.  All part numbers went through to basket & nothing flagged up as being restricted !

I would think insert will be same as 2011 and the wiring is all there as well only need to get light and plug in.

Update from my mate in the states, the fuel tank insert is vin protected & not only do they require the vin number for the bike they also want the original part back before they will hand over the item  >:(.
Have not tried to complete order online at UK dealer as I'm sure they will require the same. However the lamp assembly is on back order with no release date, so reckon the moco are already onto this mod for 2011 models.
So back to the drawing board on how to achieve this mod. Any ideas ?

I took my 2011 console off, the bottom of the insert is painted black. I sanded with some fine sandpaper, the lettering and logo are under the black paint and seem to be silk screened to the underside of the insert. I think if sanded carefully to expose but not remove the lettering then touch-up (cover) the exposed surrounding background the led light will show through translucent lettering and logo. It will take some time and careful work but it can be done. I have pictures of the sanded bottom side of the insert But for some reason they wont upload. There also is a 12V harness under the console which looks like it would plug into the 2012 light assy.  I am off to Sturgis so I will be continuing the quest when I return.

With the 12v harness and a place to screw in the light it seems like Harley wanted to light this up on the 2011 and they abandoned it. :nixweiss:

Wayne, did you try using some kind of a liquid like goo gone or paint remover instead of sand paper?

I will take my console off tomorrow and see if there is any power to the 12v plug/harness.
Title: Re: Illuminated CVO Logo

I would be careful about goo gone or some similar type of chemical remover as it might remove ALL of the paint and lettering!  Wayne is on the right track i belive. When mine was off getting prepped for paint, the sand blaster didnt realize what the opening on the underside was until it was too late, and removed some of the black paint from the bottom.  My painter was able to fix it though so all is well now.
 Just a word of caution.

I think you give them too much credit. Based on Wayne's observation, it seems they did a stop gap with the overcoated insert, when the light assembly wasn't complete. Either way, the good news is, sounds like a cool upgrade, fwiw.

It looks like a chrome-ish coating. Hard to get a good photo..... It isn't clear through though. You may be able to just put the light behind the '11 and have it show through

I'm going riding with a guy that has an 11 tonight, I will see if he is willing to let me experiment

I put a light behind mine and it didn't really show through enough. You saw white light, but it didn't look too good.

It's an led and I never thought to see if it lit up red or white. Crap! Guess I will have to pull it apart again.

I am picking my 2011 Krypto up in a couple days and it has the illuminated console. Not sure of the build date yet so it may have been an issue of getting the necessary parts in stock to install.

I'd question who told you that.  The '11 softail convertertible had the back lit console, but none of the other CVOs did.  If your does have an illuminated console I know we'd all like to see it, and find out how you go it.

This is getting interesting.  Ticitme  is there some sort of cloth/material diffuser over the led assy?  Looks like it.

I will be heading out Thurs 6am for Sturgis.  I plan on asking lots of questions to the HD guys about this subject and the Amps, never know what they will say!

Later guys

With the 12v harness and a place to screw in the light it seems like Harley wanted to light this up on the 2011 and they abandoned it. :nixweiss:

Wayne, did you try using some kind of a liquid like goo gone or paint remover instead of sand paper?

I will take my console off tomorrow and see if there is any power to the 12v plug/harness.

YES.....There is 12v at the plug once the ignition switch is turned on. :2vrolijk_21:

This is a plug and go mod. I did try rubbing some Goo Gone on the inside of the logo and it really did not remove anything. The paint is on there pretty thick. The flash light would not go threw mine.

The early 2011 guys seem to have reason to complain.  Running changes in a model year to correct issues can and should happen.  Running changes to add accessory or bling should make those without complain a little.

That doesn't sound like the kind of change one would expect as a running change.  Very surprising.  I don't remember the power connector being under the dash on yours either.  We had that off during the handlebar change.

Again, something like that I can understand.  Someone on the assembly line just grabbed the wrong part and put on your bike.  This would be a new subassembly that would require a conscience action to be implemented.

Just an update on my order of the "vin protected" console insert....got an e-mail from the dealer and my order status changed from "processing" to "on order from HD"....got passed the first hurdle....we will see if they actually ship it to me when it comes in. I will worry about ordering the light assembly after I have the insert.

An additional update--the dealer charged my credit card for the insert so I may really get it!!

Considering how much of a premium you have to pay to get a CVO they should be perfect.  And if not, your dealer should be ordering the replacement parts to make it that way.  I know I would not stand for it on a bike I paid over $32,000.00 for.  You want to cut corners and quality on a regular Street Glide, fine.  But that is just not acceptable on a CVO IMO.

I don't think they should be cutting corners on a regular SG either....it's still $19K

Something as simple as the console trim should have been replaced--either at the factory quality check (HA HA) or at least caught by the dealer at the PDI.

If your dealer is  :2vrolijk_21: they will order it for you and just input a VIN number from any 2012 CVO SG. There are a few 2012's already out there in the U.S. so it should not be that hard to get a number.

Over here since not too many make it here and when the do it will probably be October/November and then you got to get a number...ish. From what i understand the Harley parts system will not allow you to proceed with completing the parts order without the number.

Well I like many others have been "shot down" today.... My dealer emailed me and said that HD refused to allow them to order the console medallion, which is the "restricted for purchase" part, since I have a 2011 FLHXSE2 and not a 2012 "FLHXSE3" bike......

So I called HD customer service and spent over a 1/2 hour on the phone trying to get them to release the one part that is presently restricted for purchase by those who do not have a 2012 FLHXSE3 bike.  I told her that I have heard (in this forum) that many of the later built 2011 bikes have this "feature built in".  She of course, followed the HD line that it did not come on my bike, therefore it is restricted to the bikes that came from the factory that way (this of course is true about many parts on those bikes, but I just want the one console part).  The customer service person did say that if I could present her with a Vin number from a 2011 FLHXSE2 bike that had the center console illuminated from the factory, that she would take my request to a higher level there at HD and possibly would release that part to me for purchase.....

So there you have it..... any of you out there that has a 2011 FLHXSE2 bike that is illuminated, please step forward .... allow us to show HD that they started to produce 2011 bikes with the feature and maybe they will see fit to let us others have that feature too....

So sad and somewhat pissed in Virginia   >:(

I personally am going to make mine illuminated.....  somehow!!

Got it.  Been giving this issue deep thought.  Have it sorted now.

1) Get a flashlight (small)
2) Get a mirror (small).
3) Remove dash from tank
4) Stick mirror on top of tank
5) Drill big hole in dash below area to be illuminated
6) Hold flashight in teeth while riding and shine through hole in dash to bounce off mirror in to area to be backlit.

So how many 2011 SG did Harley produce ? If there are enough owners out there who are willing to spend the time contacting Harley to make a complaint, surely they will have to do something, particularly as it was them who advertised the 2011 with backlit CVO panel  :cucumber:

It is actually on the front cover of the 2011 CVO Catalog.  It is on Page 05 upper right hand corner "Keyless ignition with backlit cvo emblem"

The front cover and the statement on Page 05 is for the Convertible, not the Street Glide.

The front cover and the statement on Page 05 is for the Convertible, not the Street Glide.

So, to summarize, there's no documentation anywhere promising this little addition would be there.  There's no citation for an '11 actually having it.  As has been the case repeatedly with the CVO bikes the light has shown to be an addition of one year over the prior year.  But many are kvetching they want it anyway.  It's a soap opera; "As the Sprocket Turns."

And in our latest episode.....  :huepfenlol2:

There is no such advertisement.  Complaning to mother Harley about this would be a huge waste of time and effort.  No different than complaining that 2011's should get saddlebag lid speakers.

Have been known to ride either o........ ah, never mind  ??? .

No, you understood what was being said quite clearly.  You do a disservice to yourself and your point (and anyone else unfortunate enough to follow your lead) by arguing that the 2011 SESG should have an illuminated widget based on the fact that Mother Harley said an entirely different bike happened to have a similar widget.  Especially when you apparently knew of the distinction to begin with and chose not to mention it.  Or, in the immortal words of the great sage Homer (no, not the Homer from The Odyssey, the other one):
Title: Re: Illuminated CVO Logo
Post by: Invisible68 on August 20, 2011, 11:01:43 PM
Was just pointing out that the backlit widget was on the front cover and what page in the book it was listed.  was just trying to point out where it was listed in the book.  Never ment to imply that it was on the streetglide or should be.  It was early in the morning.  and when I looked later I saw someone pointed that out did not list the bike it was on.  I was trying to debunk the fact they did not have it ready for the street glide but if they had it for the softail and had a picture even on the front cover.

That source is a magazine saying the part is there rather than Harley saying the part is there.  For those saying they are going to storm the ramparts at Harley with letters and phone calls demanding (begging, cajoling, whining about, etc etc etc) the part be supplied out of some sense of entitlement or equity you really need to find a source where Harley suggested it would be part of the actual bike you're wanting it for.  That the magazine obviously got pre-release information from Harley is irrelevant to the fact that no one has yet offered a citation from Harley itself.

Don't get me wrong.  I hope someone does.  If you can force Mother Harley to actually give you something more power to you.  But all the sound and fury about nothing so far is.... well.....

At least with those, others can see them either when you are going down the road, or the when the bike is parked.  This one would only be on when the ignition is on, and only you will see it.  I doubt if my BSR would notice it if you put the freaking bat signal under the tank panel.. :huepfenlol2:

As far as what comes on a CVO and what doesn't ,everything the MOCO puts out usually has the fine print that the majority don't read.
I have seen words like this since my 1997 Fatboy...., from the 2012 CVO H-D back cover :
"We reserve the right to discontinue models or change specifications at any time without incurring any obligations. Some features and accessories are not available in certain countries......"

Just for grins I tried to order one of these parts through LSHD.  Order went in, showed being processed, then about a week later got a message saying it was a VIN protected part and asking for a VIN.  So that experiment suffered the same fate as those "experiments" asking new gf's about...  Well, never mind, I was younger then.  But the part didn't come through.  That's the important thing here.  Really.

Good thing there is no rush...I still need to order the light assembly for it, but if I ordered both together with my luck I would get the light and not the insert so it would be useless.

That makes sense.  Only the one part reports as VIN protected anyway.  So if you score it can then buy the light at your leisure.  No risk of an unreturnable electrical part that way.

Mike look at my reply #170 on this thread. There is a copy of the 2011 Facts and Figures right from Harley you can download. This is what HD released to the Press to get the word out on the 2011 line up. I also found it in the November 2010 issue Volume 42 Number 11 of HOT BIKE. It clearly says on page 44 " A low profile tank console and insert with back -lit LED CVO emblem". Funny thing is that on the same page they have a close up of the tank console with gas gauge. The gas gauge LED's are lit up....7 dots with gas pump but the emblem is NOT lit up.

So I went armed with this information to my stealer yesterday. I talked with the guy who sold me my bike. I showed him the info. He first said it applies to the U.S. models....NO I said because i know of lots of U.S. models that do not light up. Then he said something about some fine print about the bike not be exactly as shown. I said B-S.....bottom line is I did not get what i paid for as advertised by HD. Then i went on to say i was willing to split the cost in half if we ordered the parts........are you all still laughing..........anyway the guy held a pretty straight face. He said if i wanted anything out of this i would have to take it up with Deeley Canada. He assured me we will order the parts/insert as soon as we get a 2012 VIN......AND YES....I get to pay for it

I tried sanding the black paint off the back of the insert, I guess I wasnt careful enough, I sanded very lightly with fine 480 paper.  I removed some of the lettering and the top of the bar and shield. DAMN  I will fix the lettering and paint it black until I can figure out another way OR get someone with a 12 to order an insert for me.  I will continue the Quest and update when possible.

I know you're all going to say, "easy for you to say, you've already got the lighted CVO emblem", but to be honest, it's just kind of gimicky.  You can't, along with the gas gauge, see it during the day in sunlight, unless you put your hand around it to shade it. Unless you do a lot of night riding, or sitting in your garage oogling it, you won't see it.   :nixweiss:  Not sure it's worth the money to upgrade an '11 to do it.  (And no, I won't swap out with anyone... :P) JMO.

My friend bought a 2012 this weekend. I mentioned how much I wanted the illuminated logo and explained you couldn't buy it unless you have a 2012. He said he would buy me one if I wanted it. Can he do that or does he have to turn his current lamp in to buy a new one?

He could give you his old one, claim his was stolen by some crazy non CVO road glider
that he saw riding off into the sunset waiving his dash and yelling Hi-Ho Silver Away!

and therefore he needs a new one and there's none to swap...

Just got a shipping confirmation for my insert, it has been on backorder for a while now...but will be here on Wednesday.
I ordered a chrome dash to mount it in, thought I would change up the tank on my '11, but now I'm thinking I will need to change my gas gauge & cap to match the dash I ordered if I go that route. I may not get anything mounted until winter now, but I thought I would let anyone knows that is following this thread that it can be done. I've got an '11 and was able to purchase the insert for the '12, but I did have to provide a VIN # from a 2012, but that's not too hard...

To get the insert to come off with out breaking or cracking it i gently pushed from the back. Remember to go very slow to give the adhesive time to detach itself from the console.

And the same from the bottom hole.

Post by: Mano on October 22, 2011, 09:53:16 AM
Putting my fingers under the front of the insert. If not it will drop back down and stick to the console.

While i did have my fingers under the front i very slowly moved left to right while i lifted. There is some flex but be patant and it will slowly detach itself in one piece.

After getting a good look at the new one i do not think i will ever install it back on the bike but i did put it in the box and saved it. I am just saying this in case you break the insert taking it off.

What i used to clean the console before installing the insert.

You must clean it well if you want the adhesive to bond with the console. Do not take a short cut on this. You just paid big bucks for the insert. Do it right.

Remove the fake plug cap which was installed to keep the water and moister out. The plug already has voltage going to it once you turn on the ignition. It works with the gauges lights.

When installing the insert to the console i started from the bent part. I made sure that the crease or bend was in the same bend as the console before i came down very slowly with the long part of the insert. Make sure you do go slow to make sure you are coming down straight.

I also had the heater on next to the bench just to keep everything warm and flexable. It was cold up here last night. ::)

I have one on order, have had since end of August... looks like it will be in this week... But from what you guys are saying they won't actually ship it to me as I don't have a 2012 VIN -  Long wait to end up not getting it.  Kind of surprised they ordered it and charged me for back then just to find they won't ship.   They sent all of the other parts a month or so ago.

I'm using a vin that somebody else used to order this part.....that's why I am hoping to get it...I hope the MoCo does not track by duplicate parts/vin. If it works, then you have a valid idea...if not, then posting won't help since once it's used you would not be able to use it again.

You may be out of luck MJ.  I've had orders denied for the SEEG and the SERG for emblems that were ordered within a year of each other.  Jenni, when she was at Tri-County, told me that duplicate orders within a year on the same VIN nearly always got flagged.  I had it happen on two separate occasions.

Mike sounds like a trade up is in order ...  :nixweiss: Sorry my inner voice is speaking again  :confused5:

Let's see....I had the '10 SESG a year and 2 months and I have the '11 a year this month----I can't do it again. Nice idea, but not for saddlebag speakers and a tank console light. Love my '11 too much. If this doesn't work I will find a good vin somehwere......

That just brightened up my day :furious2:

Unless the dealer has it in stock and just ships it to me when they see a '12 vin :confused5:

Yeah....right......just thinking positive

Tried a white light and you could barely see it.

I even tried removing some of the black paint on the back, but when I realised it would remove the CVO logo I stopped & put black paint back. Just thought that as the red LED light is intensely bright it might show through !
Need to order the light fitting anyway so will see what happens  :cucumber:

Mano, I have been away from the forum for a bit.  The console looks great!  Might think of doing that over the winter.  Guy at my local dealer used a different VIN for that rear fender emblem from the Road Glide so he will probably help me out here too.  I've got a few things to do over the winter, rear floorboards for the wife, rear LED light to go with my LED's on the spoilers and tour pak, GPS install and that should do it.  Didn't get to ride with you this year but am hoping we can hook up next year. :pumpkin:

Sounds good. Can't wait to see your tour pak. That might be something i might want to do too. As for the insert remember you need a 2012 Canadian VIN number.

AND the MPH to KM speedo. ;)

When I said early that an International VIN was needed it is because i tried to get the insert with a U.S. VIN. and it would not go threw. Once i got a International/Canadian VIN the order went threw. Also you cannot use the same VIN for the same part. So I am told. :nixweiss:

I read a while back that they were keeping track of the parts ordered per vin, but I ordered my dash insert a few weeks after someone used the same vin to order one...and I got mine with no questions asked once I provided the 2012 vin.....now I wonder if they are still keeping records or maybe random checks :nixweiss:

I am not quite sure why there are protected parts  :nixweiss: a CVO is a CVO by VIN number anyway, and if someone was to purchase an Illuminated CVO Logo and install it on their motorcycle it doesn't change the model, vin or year of that bike. All Moco is doing is jacking the price up on *Restricted Parts* however, as we see here obtaining the parts is not that difficult. jmo

Not ready for that jump. Maintaining bikes thru the internet can be painful. Especially in this case with the insert. Just can't get over that us '11 SESG owners just want to light up the bike some more with an existing connection that came from the factory for this item and the MOCO is making it hard. I mean it ain't like they will be losing money by releasing this item.

part numbers 14100116 & 68000034

Console comes off with 2 bolts--remove the seat and take off the lower console bolt, and the other one is a small one in the front. You can see it looking down from above, just below the ignition switch.

Think I will try to get this done on mine this year....have the Orange/Black 2011 SESG and cannot stand it any longer. Can someone post ALL the correct part numbers that are needed to complete this modofication? I know I will have to get a 2012 VIN number, but want to be sure on what I am ordering because my dealer is a little "iffy" in getting things right. Also, how hard is it removing the console...have never done this before? Thanks, Gene

I purchased online the console using a SG '12 VIN from ebay. I received last week. The dealer called me yesterday inquiring about the bike because another person wanted to buy another one using the same VIN.....maybe is a guy from this site!!

Anyway I told the lady that I was selling the bike and that guy was interested.....I didn't know what else to say.. :nixweiss:

Just put an order in online.  I did a search with the part numbers and both parts pulled up.  Added them to my cart and checked out.  We'll see if I actually get the parts.

He is wrong...but if he will sell it to you without a VIN that would be very nice of him....

If you look on reply #22 of this thread you will see a copy of the parts book showing the part as "Restricted Sale Part" which means you need a vin from a 2012 SESG to order it.

I'll just wait and see if they release the part in the future. :(

Received console & light yesterday, but bike is at dealers with fairing & lowers off waiting to be painted, so dropped off parts so they can fit them whilst it is all apart, have to say there is hell of a lot of wires & connectors behind the batwing ! Will post up pics when all back together  :cucumber:

I found out how 'Restricted' restricted means with a recent acquisition, it means having a valid VIN, not necessarily yours, for the part you're buying. Beyond that, piece of cake.  ;)

As long as you provided a 2012 SESG VIN you will be good..if you gave them the vin from your '11 it won't work (at least it shouldn't)

I just installed it on my bike and they are all the same due to the fact that all the LED Lights are just mounted to the top of the plug fixture (a round disk) and when lit, it illuminates the rest of the circle. All of the LEDs end up being on the left side of the emblem. The light is held in place by two screws and is position specific meaning you can only install it one way, thus the left is always going to be brighter than the right just by the design of it.

Wow, crazy to see so many comments about this particular assembly. Crazier to read about the lengths people went through to get their bikes "upgraded" from the painted version to the lit version. Let me tell you all, this particular assembly--every last bit of it--was the most challenging project ever to go through the company that I worked at. If something could go wrong, it did. Hell, I'm fairly convinced it helped push one man closer to the heart attack that ultimately killed him.

Most likely already posted, but just in case... Got the part numbers from the 2012 CVO Parts Catalog

For the CVO center console setup:

6) Console Assembly - 61416-11
7) Trim - 62775-08
9) Drain hose - 69241-08
14) Insert Console - 14100116
15) Light Insert (CVO) - 68000034

Has anyone done this on a 2010 FLHXSE?  Just wondering if it would fit my bike.  Hadn't noticed the thread before but I really like how this looks.

Unfortunately we're out of luck on this one Dennis - we still have the center-fill gas tanks.  This console/mod only works with the 11/12 FLHXSE and 12/13 FLTRXSE since they have the right side fuel-filler and left side gas gauge.

It's too bad - it's a cool piece and looks great.

That modification is awesome. I also want to make my light green. Can you tell me the size, placement of the led's, and where you bought them? I would really appreciate any pictures you have!
Thank you,
Mark

Oznium.com
3 x Prewired Superflux 4 Chip LEDs - Blue, they were less than $10.

I arranged them in a semi circle (3 point) around the logo and secured them with a dab of super glue. Wired in parallel and good to go!
