2015 CVO SG Rear Stock Shock Height (12" or 13")
« on: July 27, 2016, 11:10:11 AM »

I don't seem to find the info readily available on Harley's site in specs.

Does anyone know or has anyone measured their stock rear shock height?  Reason I'm trying to decide between the Progressive 944 (12") or the 444 (13")...  I don't want to change the ride height from stock as it may change the geometry of the front end relatively.

If anyone does this measurement on the ground, bike should be level.  If you measure from eyelet to eyelet on the shock and it reads 12.5" or more you have 13" shocks.  If you measure under 11.5" or less you have 12" shocks.  This is due to it not being elevated off ground of course...  FWIW, I heard they can vary from one CVO SG to another...

I'm also wondering if I should just stay stock for a bit...

The SG shocks are considered 12" shocks, and the standard length shocks on other E-Glide models are 13".  The actual eye to eye measurement when fully extended may not be precisely 12" or 13", but they are close.  Since the front end on a SG is the standard height and not lowered, you can use either 12" or 13" shocks without creating a significant handling difference.  The only accurate way to measure is with the shock fully extended.

You might want to try the stock shocks for awhile before assuming you need to change anything.  If you get the sag set up correctly they aren't bad shocks, especially compared to the old air shocks the bikes came with in the past.

Jerry, that's good information.  How would you go about setting up the SAG on the factory shock as it only has an adjustment knob on the left side?  And how much SAG do you want in the bike?  3/4" or 1" perhaps?  I just want to avoid bottoming out if I can avoid it.  I will only ride it as a solo bike and no really weight in the saddle bags.  I'm about 198 lbs.

I'm not sure what the total travel is on those particular shocks, you might have to do some digging to find it.  Once you know that number, I recommend starting around 35% to 40% for sag.

The owners manual (I hope the bike came with one, if not you can get one from a dealer or view it online at the Harley website) should give you some recommended settings based on rider weight that should get you in the ballpark.

Yes, I have the manual and it states, for me, to be a the Zero or 1 adjustment.  Gonna start there and feel it out I suspect.

I don't have any seat time on a set of those shocks, but if Harley's recommendations are still like they were previously, they tend to recommend less preload, be it spring or air, than what is best.  I'd consider their recommendations to be the minimum for that weight range, try it, and then move up to the next weight range recommendation and try that.
