Don't Harley guys wear white helmets anymore?
« on: January 18, 2016, 10:45:37 AM »

Bought my brother a white Bell EVO modular helmet. Not sure if he really digs it? I told him the "old school" Harley guys use to all wear white helmets. He said he had never seen any Harley guys ever wearing a white helmet.

Just looked at Harley's white helmet the other day and thought it was cool.. although I really want the matte black 1/2 with the speaker pockets, I wouldn't mind the white one  :nixweiss:

I guess it depends on area since many states don't require a helmet, then you have folks who worry more about fashion then function or safety. White helmets for visibility to others if that is your concern and you don't mind admitting you wear a helmet.... :huepfenlol2:
Other people want to color match the bike and in my area black seems to be a popular helmet color for a long time.
Sometimes other things come into play such as military base regulations in this area too.
Others use the helmet as a place to mount small stickers all over so you have a hard time telling what the original color of the helmet was.....  :huepfenlol2:
Then you have the other extreme where the rider uses a lime green or orange Hi-Viz color helmet.
To each his own I feel.............

The only thing I can add to what VaE said is that white shows dirt & scratches much more readily that black. Of course if its serious road rash, you probably don't remember anyways.  :soapbox:

I saw a painter around her somewhere who does some wicked paint jobs to match the bike paint.  That white helmet might make a good canvas.

Just what every CVOer wants.   8)

Old school Harley guys never wore helmets.

Just how old is old school that you refer to?  I've been riding since the late 60s and I don't ever recall seeing anybody with a white helmet with the exception of one member on this forum.  However, many law enforcement agencies motor officers wear white.

I started riding with a white helmet back in the 60's, then in the 70s white again was the color. Then came the Electraglide in 2000 and we had color matched to the bike 1/2 helmets, to look cool. That lasted about a year then I got a black 1/2 helmet then a gray one. In 2002 I went with white 3/4 helmets for me and Susie,
we still have them. Two years ago I bought a new 3/4 gray one and that is my primary helmet. Not looking to be cool just safe and comfortable. Oh we are a freedom of choice state here in SC. I did ride for a while without a helmet but finally got smart enough to ware one whenever I ride. My Choice!

Thanks for all the responses! When I said "old school" I was referring to when I started riding 40 years ago on the east coast. Come to think of it, the helmets I remember were those white police type half helmets and I only saw them in Maryland where you still are forced to wear a helmet. Most of the Harley guys that I've seen riding in Pennsylvania and Deleware over the years have never worn helmets - that's why the white helmets from Maryland stuck in my mind.

I'm exchanging the white helmet for this white and black one that will better compliment his 2016 Amethyst & Purple Black Licorice bike. Might try to get some purple touch up paint from HD and have somebody pinstripe it to match.

Well, I must be a bit older than the other respondents but I certainly remember white Bell helmets being very common in my younger days.  I never paid attention to what the Harley guys wore versus what anyone else wore, so I can't confirm or refute the idea that Harley riders used to wear them.  But if you were to dig into the Bell archives and inquire about color choices back in the 50's you might find that white was very heavily represented.  I've always been partial to either black or red btw, but even in the late 60's when I bought my first skid lid there were plenty of white helmets on the display racks.

2k, as someone who has owned many black cars over the years, I have to disagree with your statement that white shows dirt and scratches more than black.  Black shows every tiny bit of dust and every smudge or swirl, not to mention scratches.  On the other hand, white or other light colors tend to hide dust and light scratches, at least until you get up close.  People who don't want to wash their cars often (and by hand) tend to go for white and light tan, definitely not black.

Gentlepersons,  this is what "old school" Harley guys wore.  Circa early 1950's.  That's my Uncle Jay on the left.   :coolblue:
