Trip planning....
« on: October 20, 2009, 06:24:06 PM »

OK folks... help a landlocked (OK, waterlocked) Island boy find his way from CA to Horeshoe Bay TX...

Google says 22.5 hours to drive... Realistically I would like to rent a scoot and ride from CA or NV or even AZ to TX...

I've never driven on the US mainland before so tips and hints would be greatly appreciated.

Ideas for stops?... Best route... is it Highway 10?

Rent in Cali and ride to Texas........and stay off the interstates......do it all on two lane roads.  Some rental places you can rent a GPS also.  Check Eagle Rider in San Jose, Calif.

The whole deal is your starting point, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego to name a few. With family from Sacramento to Chula Vista we can help out. Interstate 10 will lull you to sleep even on a bike, but you will have to be on it during a ride to Texas. What I would like to see is someone meet you at your starting point, ride with you and tag team to the next members region. If you have the time to see some of the hidden treasures along the way we can show you our own backyards. How fast do you need to get to Texas? Stop and smell the cactus? Let us know.  Dave

As long as I'm in Horeshoe Bay on Jan 27 I'm fine.... I have not yet confirmed the trip yet as I'm not 100% certain this will happen. Most proabably would be via LAX unless there is something more convenient to a fly and ride... Tell me how many days I'll need and I'll work with that.

I appreciate the offer for the tag-team... it'd be much more fun if I could bring my own scoot though.... I can navigate pretty well... but I cant determine distance and travel time... (remember... Oahu is 112 miles around...) I drove from Vegas to AZ to have lunch with my sister.... 5 hours... WTF?.... (OK... it was in a Ford Escort)

Right now its just looking for suggestions and ideas... Always looking to get "un-waterlocked" and shown the real world... not sure if momma is gonna make the trip with me or not.

As I have done this before from San Antonio to Santa Barabra, I10 is the fastest.   A lot of it is 80mph legal but OMG what a terrible ride in a car much less a bike.  The trip on I10 is 1330 miles and a solid two days of 675 each day (long days).

We  avoid I10 and take three or four days to ride it.  Thus you can ride Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon(unbeliavable), go to Winslow AZ (yes the eagles), Petrified Forest and Painted Desert, ride the Coronado trail (great ride), cross up into Cloud Croft NM (great ride) come in to Texas via roswell across to San Angelo and over to Horseshoe Bay.

Avoids most of of I10 (you will have to ride it some).  Having done this more than once it never gets old.  Plus in January this route would avoid some of the severe cold but not all of it.

See... if I didnt post here I would have done Highway 10 all the way....

So.. like Hawaii... Back roads are more fun... but I wont be on my own scoot (That'd be nice though)

Only problem is I know damn well I'd get lost.... I guess a GPS is mandatory for motorcycle adventures?

You can get lost with a GPS. More fun without!
II've done it both ways, a good map and a strong will works for me.
I like getting lost. ;D

Geting lost means you get to ride roads you didn't know existed and finding new places to go.

Except for dead ends and dirt roads.
