Upper fairing paint separated
« on: November 07, 2011, 09:09:30 AM »

I was pulling the fairing off saturday to install some 6.5" speakers, and when I pulled the chrome piece off (the trim where the bolts secure the windshield) two of the three rubber backing strips stuck to the paint and pulled chunks of paint off!

Not sure what happened there.  As far as I know there's not any adhesive on the paint side of those rubber pieces?  I've had it off two or three times before, no problems.

I took it to the dealer and the service manager took pictures of it.  Says he'll talk tot he moco today and see what's to be done.

Luckily you can't really see it when the trim piece is back on.

I wish i never put that strip on, my paint peeled off in that area too. I don't know how, but it did.

Same thing happened on my 2010 Citrus in Oct 2009..  Was changing the windshield at the dealer before I took delivery, gently pulled the chrome trim off, one plastic puck stuck, and pulled off a piece of paint.  Dealer ordred me a new painted outer fairing.  Like yours, could not see the 1" wide chip if the molding was in place.

When I had my fairing off in the past after that, the chrome molding plastic pucks would still stick to the paint.  I even oversized the holes in the chrome trim a little and didn't help.  Haven't had it off in over a year now.  Also have waxed up the fairing good and silicone sprayed the plastic pucks.

I have a thread on here from 09 with pictures.

It seems like the paint did not adhere to the plastic very well.  It actually pulled chunks out (e.g. the paint is still intact near the upper edge.)
We'll see what the moco does.

Just an update, the dealer is going to replace the fairing at no charge.

HD of Greenville, SC.  They are treating me right.
