05' SE 103 engine VS 2012+ stock 103?
« on: March 06, 2015, 12:01:07 PM »

I was hoping you all could school me a bit..

-is the 2005 103 SE engine a true 103, or is it a stroked 88"?
-What sets this engine apart from the newer 2013+ 103" engines that come stock? Simply the Heads and Cams and the stage 1 from the factory?

Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by a "true 103", but it is a bored and stroked TC88 with unique hemi cylinder heads and the displacement is 103 cubic inches.

Bore = 3.875"
Stroke = 4.375"
Compression Ratio = 8.9:1

The current production 103 shares the same bore and stroke, but the crank isn't the same as the 2005, and the heads are the standard heads.

Thanks Jerry. Those are exactly the specs the HD dealer has given me on it. So, all newer 103s are also TC88s that are bored/stroked to 103" by Harley? Or is the starting point a 96" with the newer bikes?

What is the difference in the newer cranks vs the 05' crank? (allow for more power?)...I appreciate your insight!

And, if I'm not mistaken, the 04-06 CVO 103s came with a SE253 cam.
You can hear it's distinctive "lope" at idle, at least I can with mine.

I did not know the newer 103s were also stroked. I thought only the 04-06 CVOs were stroked. I learned something new today.

And the newer cranks and bearing combinations are junk...

88 was first.
95 is an 88 bored, Harley sold big bore kits with larger jugs and a set of pistons, aftermarket just bored the cylinders of the 88 and slapped in pistons to fit
103 followed, a 95 stroked.

96 was then made- its the 88 cases with the 103 stroke, so Harley could sell same cylinders in original big bore kit, different piston, taking it to 103
