Oxidized ? windshield.
« on: March 06, 2015, 03:29:09 PM »

I have a old windshield that has what looks like oxidation on both sides. I can scrape most of it off with my thumb nail but that would take forever. Should I wet sand it with 2000 0r 3000 grit paper then get polishing compound in a drill and buff it?
Or use a headlight restoration kit? Once cleaned up what the best way to keep it looking good?
Thanks

If its old and oxidizing, I'd be leery that its still safe. It could be brittle and shatter even if it took a small pebble.

You could get a kit that's designed for headlight restoration and try that.

It may be a coating that was applied. I had one do that and after contacting the manufacturer it was determined that it was an anti scratch coating that was coming off. Had to replace it.

Can't say what to do with your old shield but there a various resto kits for plastic.  Best plastic cleaner / polish:   Plexus

I can scrape the white film on each side little by little with my thumb nail. I will try wet sanding with 2000 then 3000 grit paper.
I also bought a kit from  Amazon some Novus. It may take a couple of hours but it's the principal. The frame work and mounts are fine. I looked at National and Memphis replacements in case I screw it up and make it worse.
Thanks guys

I wet sanded the windshield with 1200 then 2000 grit sandpaper
Then polished it. I screwed up and the drill chuck scratched it in a few places, so I had to wet sand it again in a few spots. As you can see I have to rebuff it in a few places.
