When you say "crimp", what type of crimping device are you using that allows crimping of the core/shield at the same time?  Would a regular butt splice connector work, covered in shrink wrap?  This sounds like a very good idea!!

Butt splice connectors are too big. This is a coax cable so the center conductor needs to remain shielded for best results. The connector I specified has a small center pin that needs to be soldered to the center conductor of the pager coax. Once inserted into the connector shell, the braid is crimped with a tubular piece that provides the physical and electrical connection of the shield.

It does require some special crimp tool. The alternative is to strip back a ways and solder and heatshrink the center conductors together. The solder the braided sheild together and heat shrink the whole thing. Just keep as little of the center conductor exposed as possible for best results.

Can you also change the receiver to one with a rechargeable battery and cradle for me?    ::)

I haven't looked at the older one. It's a different animal.  :(

If you look at it and find an FCC ID number, I can look it up and see how it works.

Sounds like someone has some background in RF. Thanks for the tip, I just ordered the parts to do mine. I had a Road King Classic that had the first security pager but I don't know for sure what frequency it operated on. I think it was in the UHF band also. It does have a BNC output that would make it fairly easy to connect to.

I've been trying to find an external antenna for my 07 Escalade to improve the range for the remote start feature. They did the same thing with that antenna, it's just a quarter wave wire stuck in a bundle of wires in the left rear roof pillar area. I've moved that antenna out of the bundle which helped. It operates at 315 MHz I believe, have you seen an antenna that might work for this? Maybe a stick on dipole type also?

Thanks!

I've not dismounted the transmitter on the bike, perhaps a label on it have this information.
But, on the sheet instruction, it's wrote :
FCC notice :
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with part 95 of the FCC rules.

I know not if it's enough ....

The FCC ID will usually start with 3 letters followed by anything. Like NQE-xxxxxxxx

The first three letters identify the manufacturer and the rest is up to them. Try looking on the pager receiver or under the battery door. That's where it is on the new one. If you have the manual it may be in there as well.

There are some 315 MHz antennas available from www.digikey.com but I didn't see any dipoles. You could get close by just running a coax from your module (BNC) connector up into the tourpack. The split the braid and center conductor apart so they form a T with the cable. Cover with heatshrink and cut to about 7" long on each side (14" total end to end).

I don't think that is it. Manufacturers are required to put the lable on but a lot don't do it. I can't look it up without that or at least the manufacturer name. I'd bet it isn't Harley. Let me do some checking. Maybe the new one is made by the same company?  :-X

Update

Well I looked but can't find the older one. Kenwood Industries designed the new one. The also designed the Scorpio alarm system. Both are on 433 MHz.

My understanding of the systems is that early system requires the receiver to have an unobstructed path to the transmitter to be effective. The new system has a substantially improved range as well as being able to function with physical obstructions in the signal path.

Hope this helps.

I know not the new system but for mine :
Range :
Environmental and geographic conditions may affect signal range.
The average reception range is approximately 400 yards.
The actual reception range could be greater or less depending on the location and/or the presence of obstacles between the vehicle and the receiver.
The reception range can also be affected by the presence of strong electromagnetic interference from outside sources.
The system is equipped with a range confirmation feature that notifies the owner when the receiver is no longer in the reception range.

Hope this helps
