Does anybody's Fairing Oil Temp Gauge work right?
« on: April 23, 2007, 06:45:20 PM »

I originally posted several months back that I was installing the Fairing Oil Temp Gauge on my bike.  It worked great when I had it on my '05 Ultra, but then again, the temp sensor was in a common sense place on that bike.  Unfortunately on the FLHTCUSE, it is installed on the oil cooler line.

I know others posted optional places to mount, i.e., underneath, etc..  But I chose to stay with the Harley recommended location in case there would be any warranty issues..

I was just wondering if anyone has one that works properly?  I ended up getting a dipstick gauge just to see how hot I was running and this weekend, I was at 270 degrees oil temp and the Fairing Gauge barely registered 110!

Does anyone know what temp the oil cooler trips to full flow?  Even when that is not full open, there should be some flow?  Correct?  It should have at least shown something closer to 200 at that temp!  I was wondering if the thermostat was bad in my oil cooler adapter..

Any thoughts?

Yea, the factory install in the oil cooler line sux.  Remove sensor, plug the oil line, and reinstall sensor in the correct place ==> in the oil pan, and it will work great.

All I can tell you is what mine does in my 05 with the sensor in the oil pan.  How that relates to your 07 in the line, I don't know.

Below 180 degrees on my gauge, the gauge reads 40-50 degrees lower than my LED temp dipstick.  Once the oil cooler thermostat starts to open at 180 degrees, from 180 degrees on up with my fairing gauge, it is within 15-20 degrees of my LED dipstick.

At 70 degrees air temp it runs 180 on the gauge on the highway and 210-230 in stop and go traffic.

Hope this helps.

I tried the Harley temp gage in the oil cooler line it did not work. I made the dealer install a after market to the oil pan like your old one and it works great, No charge to me.

Here's another vote for "in the pan". I looked at the hookup that Harley recommended and both dealer and myself...said nope! not going to happen. They installed it in the oil pan and it works just fine. Warranty problems??!!! Warranty of what??? Anyway, my dealer didn't have a problem at at and even found the oil pan fitting to make it work.

I know 2ln yelled at me for doing this but I put it inline as per the dealer. It works fine if you realize what you're reading. The temp is oil coming out of the oil cooler and mine reads about 110. It will get hot enough to read ~ 180 at times. As post elsewhere tonight, this is not scientific and non binding or fornac... never mind.  :orange:

You assume the LCD is reading correct based on what.  It maybe off as well.  But mines in the pan as well.
