Fuel gauge stuck on full
« on: April 24, 2007, 07:12:36 AM »

99 Road King, fuel gauge is stuck on full. Even if the gauge is disconnected it stays at full. My initial thought is the sending unit/float is stuck. This has happened on my SERG. However with the gauge at full even unplugged I think it is the gauge. Any ideas?

Gas gauges - garbage.  Actually, I am sorry HD.  Mine is currently kinda working.  Five or six fixes - three replacements, never fill the tank past 4.6 gallons from absolutely freaking empty and you know, I'm tired of this topic already.  The thing just does not work!

Just use the odometer and know how many miles for your kind of riding you can do between gas stops.

Sorry, those that know me don't like it when I get to complaining about the things that don't work on my bike.  So much is so great, but some chit is just that!

As a former Jeep owner I never rely on a fuel gauge and always use the tripometer

Puzzled-

Mrs. WeCVO said it better than I could.  Bet its the gauge itself. Quite a few Harley fuel gauges appear to have been calibrated by demented blind gnomes with shaky hand syndrome.

Then, of course the majority of them appear never to have been calibrated at all.

Mine does the opposite, it always seems to be on empty. but $18.54 fixes it temporarily.

I saw on the news a couple of days ago that premium in S.F. is $3.75 gallon.  I guess stuck on full wouldn't be a bad thing. :huepfenlol2:

Mrs.We,
Don't doubt your experience at all but some do work. Guess I've been lucky, but my warning light comes on within 20 miles every time and I take about 4.8 every time. (I am anal so I stop as soon as I see the light come on). I have run out a couple times on a Sporty some years ago (did I take it off reserve??)

I hate to stick up for the HD guys but...

Maybe you have to think of it like the cabbie in Mexico city told me about STOP signs.....Eees just for suggestion senior...... :P

My Gas gauge is perfectly reliable on my 2006...it stays at full for the first 2.5 gallons, drops to half as it sucks down 3.3-3.5 gallons, plummets to less than 1/4 by the fourth gallon and the light comes on with less than 1/8 at 4.3-4.5 gallons...completely reliable...

and while I do use the trip odometer it must be used with the above visual check of the gas gauge...if I am getting 25 mpg (~85-90 miles), it hits that halfway mark a he!! of a lot faster than when I am getting 35mpg (~110-120 miles).  I consistently fill up to the point where gas comes through the little holes.  I get much better mileage doing 45mph than doing 75mph.  I also get better mileage outside of the midwest where I theorize that they far exceed 10% ethaenol.  Below lists my mileage per fillup on our recent trip:

Determine if it is the gauge or the sender...pop thgauge and jury rig a voltage.

here is a GMC article that may be usable to test the bike gauge:
