Neutral Light Stays on
« on: May 16, 2007, 11:18:35 AM »

Took the 07 out for a little ride last night. Only have 650 miles on it. Want to get it back to the dealer for the 1,000 mile check. At that time will do the true duals, AC & SERT. Last night the neutral light started flickering will riding and eventually pretty much stayed on all the time. OK, something for the dealer to fix. But, then I noticed the little red "key shaped" security light was on while riding. Is that normal? I don't remember seeing that before.
Thanks

Your red security light should not be on.  The last time I washed my 05, the next day the neutral light stayed on or flickered.  I removed the chrome cover over the neutral switch on top of the tranny, removed the wire plugs, and reinstalled on switch and all good since then.  (knock wood).  Your neutral switch could also be bad.  Don't know if the security light and neutral light are related.  Good luck and let us know what you/dealer find.  Remove wires from neutral switch is easy to do and I would try first.

That's interesting to hear. I just put that cover on my bike last night I'll remember that if I should run into this problem. I did put a little dieelectric grease on the pins as I was having some difficulty getting the plugs back on maybe this will help eliminate this from occurring. :nixweiss:

BTW - That cover looks nice, but makes the black starter stand out more. Sure wish my starter would go tits up so I could upgrade under warranty. :)

Thanks for the information. I will try the plug on the neutral switch tonight. I think I will also check the battery in the key fob. Maybe it's weak and the security system was not recognizing it while riding. The first thing I did when I saw the red light on was check my belt to make sure the key fob was still there. Yep, it was there.

You mean it hasn't been having an intermittent failure for awhile now that's just now starting to get bad enough to take it to shop for?  You know, those kinds of starter armature problems where it often works fine if you rap on it a bit but, eventually, just won't work at all anymore.  It sucks when those types of problems won't present in front of the mechanic.  But they're real.  So if described accurately they just might swap it out rather than expose a rider to being stuck out.

I like the way you think. :2vrolijk_21: Unfortunately my conscience would bother me to much to do that if it wasn't so. :(

I had the exact same thing happen on my '99. The problem was a short to ground on the wire going to the neutral light. The wire had rubbed through the insulation on the radio case. The Positive is "Hot" whenever the switch is on, and the switch on the tranny, completes the circuit to ground. When the insulation rubbed through and the wire touched the radio case, the circuit was complete.

I fixed the problem by wrapping the indicator light wires, they were all rubbing, with elec tape and then put several pieces of tape on the ridge of the radio where contact was being made. I also tyrap'd stuff a bit different to add some space there.

Hey Chief, the MOCO updated the neutral switch a while ago, PN 33926-06A.
Have your Dealer order THAT number and it should fix the neutral light issue.

The red key light staying on warns of an issue with the turn signals and or alarm. Have the Dealer check for codes...

I don't have the problem anymore. My problem was a chafed wire inside the fairing. I fixed my problem. I was trying to help wheels with a possible solution to his problem.

Ah, wish I'd seen this earlier - this is the problem that's been bugging me too. And others - http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=16054.0

The security key LED coming on is because for some reason the neutral switch is wired through the security module  :nixweiss:
