Evil Knivel Dies
« on: November 30, 2007, 04:34:00 PM »

Just saw news that Evil Knievel died today, looks like complications from diabetes.

Many stunt riders have broken a lot of his records, but most were riding modified dirt bikes, Knievel did it on big US iron!

A sad day for motorcycle enthusiasts, all over the world and espeacialy the Tampa Bay area where Evil has resided most of his life.
Have met him a couple of times and he sure did regret his earlier lifestyle of abuse his body & the "bottle", which was the cause of his liver failure . He live a happy go lucky life...... R.I.P. "Evil". God Bless.

Evil Knievel dies at 69

November 30, 2007
BY THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
CLEARWATER, Fla. — Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose jumps over Greyhound buses, live sharks and Idaho’s Snake River Canyon made him an international icon in the 1970s, died today. He was 69.
Knievel’s death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs. Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

Immortalized in the Washington’s Smithsonian Institution as ‘‘America’s Legendary Daredevil,’’ Knievel was best known for a failed 1974 attempt to jump Snake River Canyon on a rocket-powered cycle and a spectacular crash at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. He suffered nearly 40 broken bones before he retired in 1980. Although he dropped off the pop culture radar in the ’80s, Knievel always had fans and enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years. In later years he still made a good living selling his autographs and endorsing products. Thousands came to Butte, Mont., every year as his legend was celebrated during the ‘‘Evel Knievel Days’’ festival.

‘‘They started out watching me bust my ass, and I became part of their lives,’’ Knievel said. ‘‘People wanted to associate with a winner, not a loser. They wanted to associate with someone who kept trying to be a winner.’’ His death came just two days after it was announced that he and rapper Kanye West had settled a federal lawsuit over the use of Knievel’s trademarked image in a popular West music video.

RIP !!!

He lived hard, road hard and died way too young.  His lungs were scared from Hepititis C that he got from a blood transfusion after one of his serious injuries from a stunt.  He was a hell raising s.o.b.  I saw it first hand.  He was raised by his grandparents in Montana.  He did it all.  Yes he made mistakes....huge mistakes.  But there was nothing artificial about him.  What you saw is what you got.  There will never be another like him.  I think God will enjoy him.  :cherry: :cherry:

RIP, Evel. :(

I still have the stunt bike and the van that went along with it.  Thought about eBaying it a few times, but thought better of it.  He's a classic and there will never be another one like him.  A sad day for sure.  I remember watching the Snake River Canyon jump on TV.  Hell, I must've only been 8 or 9, maybe younger, :nixweiss: but I remember thinking that was the coolest thing I ever saw, even though he didn't make it all the way across.

Sometimes age is a wonderful thing when it comes to memories.  In the late 60's there were many time I talked briefly with Evel.  I have 8mm movies of him at Sacramento AMA Mile, The Cow Palace, jumping cars, I was taking the 8mm from the end of the ramp.  The days when a pit crew member could walk out, take pictures, talk to anyone.

Maybe I will now did out those old 8mm and convert a couple to video, would be fun to watch them again.

May the wind always be at you back Evel!
