Trans engine interface cover
« on: December 04, 2007, 03:01:32 PM »

If any of you have followed this before, 2Lane and I are the only ones that have done this.
The interface cover does not fit according the HD website (with a hydraulic clutch release).
Actually it does fit, you just can't get the trans dip stick out with the cover in place. You do have to bend - move the oil line a bit.
Not a problem. Whenever I changed the oil I would leave the cover off for a couple hundred miles until I was ok with the level, then put the cover back on. Not a big deal, 4 screws.

But I did notice that the boss around the holes where the cover attaches to the trans cover were cracking.

I broke off the rest of the piece, and used a die grinder to round out the hole.
I really don't think the screw hole is necessary, so the next time I take the cover off I will eliminate the rear screw boss. Then it will be two simple screws to get the cover off

The hole that is to the right in this picture is the one I will be removing.

Duane was way ahead of me on this.  A year or so if I remember right.  When I finally got around to messing with mine it ended up not being the same task either.  Same part.  But different fit entirely with six speed as opposed to the five speed.

No clearance issues with the dipstick on this one.  All the holes line up.  You just have to be willing to relieve (GRIND OFF) a fair bit of material from the new cover if you want to put it on.

Not the read air brush markings on the contour of the cover where it travels along next to the tranny.  At the top it had to be clearanced very little but the need was greater and greater as you went further down.  At the bottom it was close to 1/4" that had to be removed.

When done just dressed it back, smoothed it over and clear coated the area that had been worked on.  If you look close you can see it looks slightly different.  But you have to look close.  It still looks much better than it did without the big cover.
