Running Open Element on Doherty Power Pacc
« on: December 31, 2007, 02:41:36 PM »

I have a Doherty Power Pacc, I want to run it open element. I'm looking for a nice looking cover for the end of the filter. I'm not sure if the end diameter is the same on their filter element as the K&N. Mine measures 6 1/16 inches across, and has a 1/4 lip. I was looking at the Ness Big Sucker cover, it looks close to mine, not sure of size. Any ideas?

I did this when the 03 SERK's came out and many others have done it since. The scripted Screamin Eagle CVO air cleaner cover is almost the perfect size to put over the outside surface of the K&N filter Doherty uses.

had to do this Big B....I have been dealing with the same problem....well not problem it is a situation.

I powder coated the Doherty filter cover then installed the round chrome screamin eagle scripted center piece from my stock football cover.

Good touch....hadn't thought about doing that. My backing plate is at the chromer.....and that is a long story for another time.

I hadn't thought of that either, I was looking for something to go over that edge. I could do mine black to match my bike, thanks.

Did this awhile back, just got the camera out so I thought I'd take a few pictures, It's the Power PACC like I said above, had a local company powder coat the front plate black. Since it was just black which they do all the time, I was only charged $10! This wasn't the insert I wanted, but they discontinued the one I wanted, this had the same part number, and was sent, so I kept it!

Looks real nice Craig! :2vrolijk_21:

Let me know if those power vents prevent any puking for ya. They didn't do anything on my bike when I was running that last year. Actually, nothing seems to work. Stock SEAC, DPP w/PV's, TP Rocker Boxes w/S&S breather valve. Still a mess! I hope it works well for ya! Nice job man! ;)

Thanks Howie!
I've had them on for some time know no problem, I have the clear tubing attached so I can look at what comes out, not much. But I think it has a lot to do with the crank case pressure, this bike is still an 88", you're bike is probably pushing a little more case pressure than mine, also as rings wear I think you see more oil as blow by increases the case pressure. I'll see what happens when I get the 95" on it this fall!

That's what I've surmised after trying to figure out why I have such a mess. The breather system doesn't seem to be designed to handle the CP from the larger engine, especially after it's been hot rodded out. I've given up chasing a way to eliminate it. Next step is to modify the backplate to get the puking down to the ground. That's good enough for me! Again, really nice unit! :2vrolijk_21:

Beagle and I have ours plumbed back into the backplate. The amount of mist is minimal enough that I don't believe it affects performance. Hell this is the way the Screamin Eagle breathers are designed. If however that idea doesn't sit well with you, you can run the tubing down to the ground. Asthetically, that's not a winner for me, so I did as described above. In any event, the Doherty unit has it's advantages, one of them being the added power at higher RPM's as the built in velocity stack comes into play. I'm in process of modifying the BC Gerolamy filter unit to fit the Doherty as the BC seems to provide better airflow at lower RPM's, but doesn't have the high end of the Doherty. I'm hoping that in mating the two, I can achieve both.

I have mine plumbed into the plate too. I watched it at first to make sure it didn't puke into the A/C, I mostly see a little condensation once in a while, very little oil. I like the Power PACC, I only have pipes A/C on it now with a PCIII, so I didn't dyno Tune. A local shop said that they'd put it on the dyno just to see how it was running for $25, so I did, it was fat in a few areas and lean in one, so for an additional $50, they changed these areas. I can definitely feel it in the upper RPM range, I think it pulls better up hill 2 up also. When I get the 95 on it this fall I'll get it dyno tuned, just didn't feel the need to spend $300 because I put on an A/C and pipes

I have my Powervents running into a "T" then a single line run between the cylinders, down in back of the shift linkage, and zip tied to the frame where it can vent to the ground.
