USS New York
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:15:33 PM »

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center.

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

Saw something on TV the other night about this ship. It was emotionally stirring to see the building of the ship, and listening to some of the people that worked on it.

Great post Ed. I didn't know it was commissioned yet. There was a lot of talk about that ship here, and the use of the WTC scrap steel for it. Here's some interesting facts about the USS New York. ;)

Hoist! 8)

"A New Navy Ship, the USS New York, is Partly Built With Steel From the Ruins of the World Trade Center-Truth!

Some interesting information about a new Navy amphibious assault ship, the USS New York, that has been built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center, which was felled by terrorists on September 11, 2001.

The USS New York is one of several ships in the San Antonio class of amphibious transport dock ships. They are designed to transport and land troops, supplies, and equipment such as amphibious vehicles and helicopters. Designated as LPD. It is one of three similar ships that are being built and being given names that are associated with The Attack on America.  In addition to the USS New York, the USS Arlington will be named because of the location of the Pentagon, which was hit by American Airlines flight 77.  The USS Somerset will be named after the county in Pennsylvania in which United flight 93 crashed after being taken over by hijackers.

The ship is being built in New Orleans.  Twenty-four tons of steel from the World Trade Center have been recycled for the project.  About seven tons were melted down and poured into a cast to make the bow section of the ship's hull.  The steel has been treated with reverence by the ship builders and several workers have postponed retirements for the honor of working on the USS New York.

According to Naval records, several other ships have carried the name the USS New York. This new ship got the name the USS New York when New York governor George Pataki wrote to Secretary of the Navy Gordon England and requested that the Navy approve of the name in honor of the victims of September 11 and on ships that will be used to fight the war on terror.

The first was an armed gondola built by Revolutionary War General Benedict Arnold in 1776.  She was one of several ships later burned to avoid capture.

The second was a frigate built in New York and commissioned in 1800. She she saw service in the Mediterranean in the war against the Barbary Pirates.  She was in the Washington Navy Yard where she was burned by the British in 1814.

The next New York was built after the war of 1812 as part of 9 ships of the line to discourage a future war with Britain.  The threat lessoned so she was never launched but she was burned by Union Forces to avoid capture at the start of the Civil War.

The fourth was a screw sloop that was built beginning in 1863 but also never got launched.

The fifth was an armored cruiser commissioned in 1893.  She was used in the Spanish-American war and was the flagship of the admiral in the Battle of Santiago, which destroyed the Spanish fleet.  She was later renamed the Saratoga and then later the Rochester.

The sixth was the battleship USS New York, commissioned in 1914. She saw service in World War I and World War II.  She was used in the atomic testing in Bikini but survived without sinking.  She was sunk off Pearl Harbor in 1948 as a target ship.

Finally, there was a nuclear submarine names the USS New York that was in service from 1979 until 1997 when she was decommissioned."

The USS New Orleans was moored in the river for a couple days when I was doing Katrina recovery work last year, very impressive looking class of ships, lots of radar deflecting surfaces.

It is a unique and versatile ship. I spent several years serving aboard the USS Trenton LPD-14 another ship in the LPD class. LPD is somewhat short for Landing Platform Docking ships. We were referred to as a Gator Freighter since we were part of the Amphibious Navy. Many people don't know it but the Marines are part of the Navy - the Amphib Navy is the Marine part. Aboard my ship about 350 of us sailors ran the ship, but our mission was to serve the Marines & Special Ops. When deployed we carried about 1500 Marines, and usually 1 or 2 Seal teams, and all of their equipment...were talking Hummvees, Personnel Carriers, LCAC - Landing Crafts and other gear.

You can think of the LPD as the pickup truck of ships. The flat back deck serves as a flight deck for up to four troop helicopters or two Osprey, or a Harrier jet. The topside hanger could hold two Helicopters. That hanger floor would lower like a ramp  to move vehicles down below where we had two decks of storage under the middle third of the ship.

The rear third, the area under the flight deck, was called the well deck - it was a wide open space about 4 stories tall, and at the front the floor slanted up two stories to the level just under the hanger...this was what we called the steel beach....see The ship is designed to sink... :P....we could take on water and fill the well deck with 8-10 feet of water, the back end would open like a pickup truck tailgate, and Marine landing craft could come and go beaching on our steel beach to load vehicles and personnel then departing for the real beach usually a half mile away or so.

Occasionally, When things were quiet the captain would have swim call in there, or fishing call - where we wouldn't sink but just put the tailgate down and we could fish off of it. The most fun though was "shooting range" - when we would slow down to a crawl and take turns "exercising" the armory inventory at targets thrown into the water.....and a few sea snakes might have been injured here and there.  If you were really lucky you could try out the 3" / 50 cal. Mark 22 - WOW is all I can say.

Anyhow, that is a Lil bit about versatile LPD ships of the US Navy and below a few drawings...
