It's going to be retrograding soon though.  The HK radio died.  Thought it was just the internal amp so could bridge it since using the HW amp externally anyway.  No soap though.  Left channel dead also.  It's too much hassle to rehack the firmware to make another one work in pre-06 bikes and they're too damned expensive.  Also just don't need to prove to myself I can do it again.

So sticking a Sony in it when all the parts get here.  For what the head unit cost on eBay it only needs to last 18 months or so and it would still take 10 years to cover the expense of the Harley branded radio.  Better than that a three year replacement warranty for the head unit was only 18 bucks.  In the bike environment it'll probably die once before three years.  So that replacement is free.

which sony you looking at?

One of the Marine units.  Model on the way is CDX-M50iP (or something very close to that.

Against the black bezel filling the gap between the radio and the fairing that is part of the adapter kit I think the black automotive radios will probably look better.  But the silver face of the marine units may match appearance to the CVO instruments better.  Especially with the red lights on the radio's face compared to the blue ones on most of the automotive units. 

My only real dissatisfaction was that none of the marine units had bluetooth built in.  Thought that audio streaming from some bluetooth enable MP3 device might be very handy.  No such marine unit though.

I was less concerned about the wired ipod connector.  But few of the models had the front aux-in jack.  I really did not want to drill a hole in the inner to mount an aux plug hooked to the rear so that front mounted plug was a determining factor.  With that the ipod connector became just a throw-in.

Cheapest place I found that radio in a relatively quick search was here:

There was a seller a dollar and change cheaper altogether.  But this one was throwing in an ipod control cable that might give me an excuse to buy an ipod someday.
