3M rock guard
« on: May 14, 2008, 11:18:17 AM »

Hello

Your know the clear 3M film used on the front hood portion of some cars to prevent stone chips.  Just curious if anyone has had this installed on their fairing or lowers.

We have it on the fairing, lowers, front and rear of the front fender, front and rear of the tank, side covers, and front and top of the saddlebags.  It works well.  It's pretty tough to see it, but you can.  It definitely protects from rock chips.

I read through the thread - just curious whether a verdict was decided on the quality / look of the film  How does this stuff age?  I've seen some of these films / appliques get cloudy or yellow with age.  I"ve got a 7 year old Mercedes with some pretty heavy duty stuff along the rocker panel behind the rear doors (factory original) and there are some grease & grime spots that don't look like they'll ever come out.

Does this stuff age well?  Anyone put it on & hate it the first day?

Might want to send Rjob749 (Roger) a PM and ask him his thoughts since it's been a year since he's had it on. Either that or post in that thread asking his thoughts/evaluation now that it's been on a year.

Other then remembering that thread I don't know any specifics on the product. Sorry. You might want to resurrect that thread also w/a post on cost.

John,
That's weird that the 3M is more expensive, but only carries a 5 year warranty, and the cheaper has a lifetime warranty. Do you know what the difference is?

Gary,
after talking to guys at website, they look the same when you lay them out, but the 3M product applies easier when on the vehicle and they more transparent. Had mine over a year and still in tube, never got around to putting on though! ( guess did not have the chrome version!) john

I worked for 3M for almost 25 years and was the regional manager for window films/paint protection films for 4.5 years in the Southeast. I had the film installed on my 03 road king classic front fender....it is a tough product, works well in protecting the paint and remains clear due to the substrates used in manufacturing. 3M is great at making adhesives...trust me! However...NEVER try to remove it! It ripped the clearcoat right off my fender! (i had a rock ding in the film itself--it did protect the fender-and I wanted to replace the film with new). It was a disaster. 3M did warranty the product and my local dealer filed the claim and I was reimbursed for a new fender.

3M is/has always been the highest priced film on the market and the dirty little secret is that it isn't always the best. There are several manufacturers out there who make a really good product. Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's a inferior product.

Bottom line-3M is great stuff...and top dollar. Other films are just as good and can save you a few bucks. Check into it...you might save some dough!

One suggestion...don't use the do-it-yourself stuff!

I used these guys (http://www.xpel.com/) on my'08, they have kits that are computer cut to fit most models & years of bikes, they didn't have a kit for the '08 yet, but I used one for a '07 (the only difference was the tank). I figure I'll take it back once they have a pattern & re-do the tank. It cost me about 400 bucks to do the entire bike, tourpack included. Hasn't been on that long yet, we'll see how it ages.

Is it something you can apply yourself, or should you leave it to the Professionals?

If you have the patience you can, but the webiste listed have dealer that will do it.  I put small sections on places that get regular pounding without too much trouble.
