SEEG fairing removal
« on: May 24, 2005, 11:36:59 PM »

I have a 05 SEEG, are the black dots on the inside bottom covering screws that hold the lower part of the fairing on?  If so, how do you pull those plugs without damaging them.
Anyone been there done that??? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

No, you don't need to remove them to take off the outer fairing.  There are threaded holes behind the dots but they are part of the inner.  They're the mounting holes used for the wind deflectors like come stock on the Ultras if you wish to use them.  The covers just pop out.

There are a total of 7 torx screws to remove.
3 on the outside of the fairing alaong the windshield
2 on the back side toward the outer edge near the speaker pods
2 inbetween the fork legs near the bottom of the fairing.

I cover the passing lamps with a towel to prevent scratching the fairing when removing it.

Attached is a pic of the screw locations.

Good Luck

Try a pair of old socks.  Just yank one down over each light.  They can't fall down and they aren't as much in the way  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  Also, those two screws in the bottom are way to easy to drop while you're removing them.  Take them out slowly with one hand while holding an ignition magnet or other small magnetic tool up against them.

Heck, my old socks have so many holes and are just about as thin as the wife's nylons that I'll need to use two or three per light to get some protection.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Thanks, it is alot simpler than the old fairings.  HD_DUDE, thanks for the illustration.  Looks like I don't have to spend the $150 on manuals, you guys already have the info! [smiley=bigok.gif]

Be very careful re-installing the screws.  They cross-thread easily... and if you torque them down too much you'll rip the brass fitting out and it'll have to be replaced!

The bottom ones can be a chore coming and going.  One alternative (especially if they start to get messed up) is to screw a short threaded insert in each of the lower holes.  Like a short piece of all thread.  That way the insert never has to come in and out of the fairing and you can use nuts on the inside.

I really like the sock thing there Dawg.  Not only does it protect things the socks make the surface you are sliding the fairing out against a much smoother one with much less resistance.  So the fairing will just slide out like butter (assuming the socks aren't really gross).

I had our local shop replace the sender on my garage door opener a while back, and I noticed that the two lower fairing screws were no longer black.
I found one of the original screws that night by removing the lower triple tree cover. I didn't find the other one until last night when I removed the oil cooler cover to clean up the oil I spilled from changing the oil filter. When I pulled the oil filter cover off out popped the second original lower fairing screw. Seems the tech working on my bike that day had a bit of a dexterity problem.    [smiley=beerchug.gif]
