2008 CVO Ultra Clutch/Starting
« on: June 20, 2008, 09:00:43 AM »

If I start the bike in gear with the clutch pulled in, the bike lunges forward about 2 inches.
It's not as bad once the bike is hot but still noticable.
Anyone else noticed this or do I need a clutch adustment ?

Also, how may times does your engine turn over before the bike starts ?
Mine seems rather long, it turns over 4 or 5 times before firing.

Cheers

You should start your bike in Neutral and not in first.

I would love to know details on how the Hydraulic clutch actually works. I had an issue that till this day I do not understand how this could have happened.

Riding down to Myrtle Beach 17 south I noticed that twisting the throttle in sixth gear the engine would race like the clutch was pulled in (obviously slipping). The clutch did not noticeably slip in the lower gears but the engagement point was all the way out (touch the clutch and it slipped). fluids were OK and full and I could not find any adjustment to the clutch, in fact I was told that was not any. Now if the engagement point is not where you want it Can it be changed and how? After spending a day at Myrtle Beach HD they got it running fine but all they said they did was change the fluids. Is that possible? The one thing I failed to mention was before heading down to Myrtle Beach
I tried to get the bike into service and they could not get it in before I left. I had a problem that the bike would not always start, and I found out by putting it into neutral it would start. The Neutral switch in the trans would over ride
the clutch neutral switch (which would not let it start in gear without the clutch pulled in)
The bike has been running fine ever since, but it bugged me that i never understood what had happened.

My engine turns over 2 to 3 times before starting and I thought that was long.

I'm with you. I don't understand how you can make the cluth engage at a different spot. I pull my cluth lever all the way back, and If i let it out the slightest little bit, it takes off. In fact, it feels like it's hard to roll with it in gear and the clutch totally dperessed. Seems like there would be some sort of adjustment. I was told the same thing..NO adjustment.

There is clutch drag when starting in gear which adds extra load on the starter. It's easier on the starter if you start in neutral.

I don't always follow my own advice as I start in gear frequently.

You've got the same amount of adjustment with the clutch as you do with your brakes, none.

I want some adjustment too, mine starts grabbing as soon as I start releasing the lever and now I installed Iron Braid leather wraps on the levers and that keeps the levers off the grips just a hair and makes the engagement issue a little worse.

About the only thing you can do if you're going to put braids on your levers is to get smaller diameter grips.  The difference in size should make up for the width of the leather braids.  I don't know if they make extended reach clutch/brake levers that are actually bent out a little further.   :nixweiss:  But that might be something to look into seeing if there is such an animal.

The hydraulic clutch issues have been with us since they started putting them on the CVO's.  As previously noted, it works just like your hydraulic brakes which means it is self adjusting by design, and there is no manual adjustment.

I noticed on mine when brand new that I had to hold the lever tight against the grip or it would drag, and it would grab immediately as I started to release the lever.  After bleeding the air out of the system (twice) and wearing the high spots off the clutch plates, I went from no free play to approximately 1/2 inch before the clutch grabbed.  You will also notice that there will be a difference hot versus cold - that is normal also.

Ditto here... it shouldn't be turning over so many times to start!

The delay before actually starting is programmed into the ECM - it is a strategy used to make sure the engine is turning over fast enough for a reliable start and to reduce strain on the various parts.  In other words, that's normalMaybe if I practice saying that I can qualify to be a Harley service manager.

Probably means you don't have much compression so it spins up faster.  ::)

All depends on how they choose to implement the delay.  It can be done based on time, number of revolutions, or actual crankshaft speed.  I'm not sure how Harley chose to do it, but I've always assumed it was by crank speed as measured by the crank sensor.   :nixweiss:
