That sounds like an interesting lifter.  You will have to give a report once you have a few miles on them!

I'm reluctant to try smaller speed shop or machine shop's stuff, in lieu of the larger manufacturer's proven off the shelf stuff. Especially in recent times for me!  They all make their chit sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread! I'd think you'll see more consistency from an S&S than an AMS. This is just my own personal opinion. But good luck with them and let us know how ya do! :2vrolijk_21:

Top notch outfit.  Did my 95", head work and cams on my Road King.  Also used their lifters.  Great to deal with, bike runs better than I hoped for.  You won't be sorry.

I've used them in my 03 SERK and my wife's 06 Deluxe and they're great as far as I can tell.  Plus you can't find nicer, better people to deal with than Steve at AMS.

The stock Harley lifters are a very reliable quality part. Nothing against the Hylift AMS lifter I just see no need for it.

We have used Jim's, S&S, Harley SE over the years. Never had any problems. I think most of the aftermarket lifters, along with most aftermarket engine parts are good. Best to check your engine builder and go with what he uses day in and day out. His future depends on positive feedback from his customers. He will use what works best through years of trial and error. JMO

My question was referring to the use of stock over anything other then stock.
And when your engine builder is someone not getting paid and usually tough to deal with, there may not be a lot of history.

And some will use what brings the highest profit margin if specific instructions were not given.

i was trying to reduce the valve train noise. after reading about the lifter design in my first post i decided to use the ams. obviously they all work fine. my issue wound up being s/e pushrods rubbing on rocker box.  i went to the new s/e tapered pushrods

"Yet many people recommend replacing them when doing engine work"

Sure, good business. Personally I don't bother with selling of unnecessary parts, however I am sure there are some with the mind set you have to replace everything on the motor with aftermarket parts. I used to use the AMS lifters and no longer will. There were QC issues, likely resolved now, but IMO when there is risk of so much expensive collateral damage (case due to lifter bores damaged) why not stick with a known good part. The HD Eaton Delphi part is robust and affordable and assures the right amount of oil supply to the top of the motor. If there is valvetrain noise I suggest getting to the root cause. In most cases cams with fast ramps, high valvespring pressure, flexing pushrods (btw the new SE tapereds are decent for lower lift builds), heavy valve train, incorrect lifter preload, and improper valvetrain geometry can contribute to noise on a root cause level. Lifters are just called on to take the abuse. BTW adding oil pressure IMO will not help either, but won't hurt.
