Moderators, I think a list of closed dealers would make a good sticky.... This would allow touring riders the chance to make note of missing dealership coverage on their GPS databases. I know there is a few dealership POI lists out there but who knows how often they are maintained..

Central Harley North (Shawnee Store) did close. More of a consolidation than anything, Their South (Olathe) store is much bigger. The North Store was busting at the seams for space. They opened the South store about 3 years ago.

Beagle and I were at BIGG's in San Marcos CA on Saturday. They used to have hands down the best H-D clothing section of any dealership within riding distance for us. The entire section was wiped out and in it's place a tricked out Camaro. One of the salespeople told us they were going to start selling "Muscle Cars" on consignment. "Good idea don't you think" he said. " I think it sucks beyond comprehension" was my response. I went on to explain to him just how much money I had spent on jackets, chaps, rain gear, jeans, boots, shirts, sweatshirts, hell even H-D socks at BIGGS over the years because their clothing section was so well stocked and complete. "If you guys are this hard up, you'll be locking the doors within 6 months" was the last thing I said as I walked out the door. Now maybe I'm not a businessman, but getting away from your core business as a method of keeping your core business seems more than just a little off-base. AND, we all know what happens when car people sell (or try to) motorcycles.

On the opposite end, Bumpus is opening a new store in Lynchburg, TN. and just bought his wife a new ZR1 Vette. Clearly us Bumpus customers must be paying way too much.

Yeah but if you're just passing through you get an oil change and complete bike detail for $75 Mark. That's a heck of a deal. I'll rustle a California license plate for you to put on your rides. Rub some grime on your face and stuff your bags full full of clothes and tell em your on the road and need some service. B B

Amen to that. We went to the big dealer in Ukiah on the way back from Fort Bragg and the Redwood forest heading to Clearlake and got the $105 oil change...man was I pissed. Told them we were on the road and we had WA plates for sure, we called a few hours out and got there at 4 on the nose from Mendocino. In and out in an hour...i'll never go back and they could care less.

I've never had to get the oil changed on the road. Are you saying that $105 is a lot?

I have heard the rumors a few months ago about Doyle's in Roseburg from another dealership in Northern California that tried to purchase, but mother Harley wouldn't approve of the purchase. Also heard about Hangtown problems almost a year ago, but i understand it was something to do with a divorce or something to that effect

Businesses are closing at a record rate - be it HD or manufacturers, or software companies, or whatever.
HD closings mirror the economic world we live in today - Yes, sad, but not unexpected, IMO

I do not feel all these closing are only due to the "Economic Slowdown". Most of the people who own dealerships today are more than likely, only in it for the money. I know, I know who isn't, but I mean no real love for the lifestyle. They go from one business to another or run several at a time. The one that dosen't show a good return on investment is cut loose. The days of pulling into a delership and talking to the owner/operator who has personally been riding since he was 6 are gone or are far and few between. I have only met a few dealers who actually love bikes the way we do. The majority unfortunately IMO are only investors. Hence the reason the huge differences in pricing practices. It won't be long before you will need an interpreter to buy a bike. The influx of foreign owned business has spread quite wide. The Moco can take the blame for some as well. You can't force a dealership to expand for a bigger more modern presence if bike sales or service is down. The smart guy will take his marbles and go home every time. Lets face it the motorcycle is a luxury to most. Sorry again.
