FLHTCUSE4 HOW HEAVY ????
« on: March 02, 2009, 02:59:04 PM »

just taken delivery of my new FLHTCUSE4 and have had two good days of weather in which to enjoy. I do however struggle with  moving it around manually and I am no light weight really. Its been over on its side once already fortunately with no damage as I managed to lay it down very gently.
Any advise on how best to move these things around, I think I am using brute force rather than technique. Any advise or muscle pills gratefully received.

Jim,
Since you already have a introductory thread in the New Member Introduction board and your question is specific to the CUSE4 I moved it to this board. Hopefully someone will be able to give you the answer to your question,  but I'd also like to ask you a few questions that may help others to understand how the bike is giving you this problem. How/where are you trying to move bike? Are you able to get both feet flat on the ground when moving it. These are heavy bikes, but I would think as long as you kept it straight up and were able to get both feet on the ground moving it around shouldn't be a problem. Doesn't matter how big you are if you lean it to far over it's a bear to hold it up.

Hi Fired00d
I can get both feet on the ground but they are nearly fully extended. I can move the bike like this, not easily at the moment but I can get by although inclines are not at all easy. The problem I have had is when I am off the bike and trying to move it or turn it around. I guess its just a matter of technique but if there are any pointers that will help me master the technique quickly then I will be glad to hear them.

All good points.

In addition, if you are like me 5'9"'  it helps when sitting on the bike to lean it a little to one side to use that leg to push with since it give you a little bit more power  and you can get some more torque.

If that does not work the off the bike ( left hand side approach ) described is the next best way.

IF you are going to move it while not seated ----- lean it slightly in to your hip --- having said that I usually sit on mine when moving it because if you are standing beside it and it starts falling away from you it would take a very large man to stop it ;D.
This bike has a nice center of gravity compared to my last ride (a BMW LT) --- now that was a top-heavy pig at anything under 5 mph  ???

I think I know exactly what Jim is dealing with.  When you hang out at a dealership you will see guys who might be 5'8" and 150 lbs. soaking wet moving the bikes around the showroom or rolling them out the door while walking beside the bike.  They don't seem to have any problems doing it, and I've never seen one of them drop one yet.  I used to stop by a Honda/Ducati/etc. place where they moved 90% of the bikes out into the lot every morning and then back into the showroom every evening, and when it was quitting time those guys literally whipped those bikes back into the building with nary a hiccup.

I haven't personally gotten up the nerve to try this since my bikes broke the 700 pound barrier, and definitely not since I bought the SEEG.  It has to be technique, because like I said some of the folks I've seen doing it in dealerships are smaller than me.  Maybe it has something to do with not actually owning the bike in question that makes it so easy for those guys at the dealership. :confused5:

interesting comments. i recently traded in my 05SEEG2 for the 09 09 UCSE4. the first thing i realized was the difference in the feel of the bike. it just felt heavy and i was no longer flat footed, on the ground. I'm 6' and 240, so not a weenie. the only time i move it is when I'm sitting on it. i was talking to the guys at the H-D shop about the bike and trying to explain my feelings. one of the guys said, do you realize how much wider the seat is, compaired to your 05. this of course moves my legs out farther and oh yeah, shorter. so we compaired my UCSE4 to the 09 SERG and discovered that the RG has a shorter shock on the rear, than my bike. the front tube springs are the same. in another words, put those shocks on my bike and it will lower it, about 1 inch. so the new shocks are on order and when i install them, I'll let y'all know how it comes out :2vrolijk_21:

I have the same bike, and in my mind the issue is the seat height. I have changed the stocks shocks for 11,5" Progressive 440's, and presto - everything is working out fine.

Ride safely,

Jerry

Don't believe it doesnt happen tho. It happened RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, at the dealer. My bike...on the ground. I had to bite my tongue and leave the area!  :'(
That was a couple of bikes ago!  ;D

I tried this at first, just didn't feel comfortable and never mastered it.  I will only move it around while sitting on it, period.  Too heavy if it goes the other way.  Too risky to drop it for me.

Others ideas for lowering, seat, etc. may help you as well.

Hi Jim,

They are a struggle to move around thats for sure.

Two words, confidence and upright, you just have to be confident whenever you are moving it, and as said before keep the bike as upright as possible, the more you lean it the heavier it becomes. The lifts are available in the UK, you can get from Harley or a number of suppliers over here, just make sure its rated high enough for the weight, and if you going to leave the bike on it, it has a security bar to stop it lowering.
